Is anyone else thinking about participating in Maxis Taste Dare No. 26: Second Chances? The idea of this one appeals to me, though I'm struggling with who to focus on. My recent playing of the entire uberhood has given pretty much everyone a chance, though I guess the point of the exercise would be to find something more to like in a character that you're not too fond of. So maybe Gunnar Roque? Haha. But disliking Gunnar is a fanon tradition, right? I sort of like him the way he is, in a love to hate sort of way.

I think part of what I'm struggling with is that some of my unfavourites actually get quite a lot of attention from other simmers, and I think this is a significant factor in my dislike of them. I honestly don't get it and I resist giving them any more of the spotlight. (Come on, admit it. I know I'm not alone in this.) Ajay Loner comes immediately to mind, with his boring Face One (or very slight variation, if you insist) and lack of storyline (beyond counting grains of sand for fun in his bio) and relationships, and yet he's pretty much universally adored in the fandom. I guess in the spirit of the dare, I should definitely give him a second third fourth chance. Or maybe I can keep digging for someone I truly ignore entirely. I'm sure there are others I'm not thinking of right now.

Then there's the issue of my computer refusing to start up at all, so playing is sort of out for the next little while, and I can't even access any of my files until I either get it repaired again (throwing good money at bad?) or the new computer arrives. I finally ordered a new one, but I need to wait a few weeks for it to get here.

I was inspired by [livejournal.com profile] simtopi's Sim Resolutions post for the new year, so I'm making my own. Here are my simming resolutions for 2012:

I probably should use a cut for this. It got a little long. )

So I bought the Generations EP. Exciting, right? I brought it home and plopped it in the DVD drive tray, sent it back in, and waited for it to load.

It didn't.

I took it out and tried it again. And again. And then tried accessing it through the control panel.

Nada.

So then I took it to work with me to see if it would load there (when my boss wasn't looking, obviously :P). It did! So it seems my DVD drive is shot. And now I have a game sitting here, unable to play it. *sighs* I was so looking forward to seeing if I could have my sims have a same sex bachelorette party.

Just wanted to share my sad tale. You may resume your regularly scheduled activities now.

I just watched the Sims 3 Generations Producers Walkthrough on YouTube and I really liked what I heard there. For one, they said they really listened to what the players have been saying they want, and that they want more opportunities for storytelling in the life of their sims.

++!

It looks like a nice EP. At lot of the more recent expansions have been appealing to me more and more. If my computer could handle it, I think I'd probably pick a couple of them up. I really hope they continue in the direction they seem to be going in. Could it be a return to form for the series?

I'm sure I recall seeing a couple of recolours of this hidden H&M dress included in one of the more recent EPs, like FT or AL, but now I can't find them in BodyShop. Please tell me I'm not losing my mind. (ETA: Mystery solved! Thank you, Remisims!)

ETA: OMFG, Sentate is BACK! *runs flailing madly through the streets*

I really hope he remakes some version of this unreleased top. I covet it so.

Rod Humble leaves EA to work for Second Life. *cheers* Maybe now someone who actually likes the Sims series will take his place. Someone who actually gets the dollhouse-style gameplay, likes the supernatural elements that have been a huge part of the series since The Sims, and doesn't want to change the whole thing to include RPG style quests. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed.

I think the thing that really stands out for me now that I'm seriously considering my Maxis character shipping preferences is how I do not see either Dirk/Lilith or Angela/Dustin working out in the end. I never really have. Well, actually, I did have an early notion, when I first started to sim in Pleasantview, that Angela WOULD marry Dustin and live a terribly dissatisfying life of semi-poverty (Broke-style), with a criminal husband and a yard full of scary domerman pincers. (Have I mentioned my active imagination? This was way before I had any concept of sim storytelling for others. Just myself.) But now I just see Angela moving on to greener pastures, leaving Dustin to find someone else (Ginger Newson being my favourite contender at this point, given her parallel to Brandi, which is a life he knows all too well.)

I can't ever stop seeing Dirk eventually cheating on Lilith with Angela, causing a huge rift there. In my game, he always, always cheats on her, in fact. Usually with Angela, but sometimes with someone else, and often without any input from me. I don't know if he ends up with Angela, or if he eventually reconciles with Lilith, but somehow that HAS to happen for me. Lilith is all over the place for me. She nearly always gets tangled up with Don Lothario at some point in my game (*lowers voice* sometimes even while still a teen... Oh Don, you're just... yeah), and then I just see her as this amazing free spirit who maybe stays single forever. You know those amazing old ladies who were movie stars or artists or musicians, who were lovers to many famous people over the years (mostly men, but there were some exceptions, if you believe the rumours), but always stayed true to themselves and didn't settle down? Yeah, that's how I see Lilith Pleasant.

Also, Tara Kat/Chester Gieke is the nerdiest couple EVER, by far. Geeky nerds trump bookish nerds any day of the week. (That's one of mine, by the way, from my uberhood. The red hair is a bonus, but they also remind me of my cousin and her husband in an uncanny way, right down to the cat lady-ness and the too geeky/socially awkward to live hardcore videogame geek factors. I am so sold on that pairing. I've seen its proven results in RL, people! XD)

So, I'm opening the floor to other shipping chit-chat here. Please try not engage in any full-on shipping brawls, but if you feel the need to pen an impromptu shipping manifesto, then who are we to stop you? :D Go on and share your insights, amusing pairing stories from your game, and so on.

Why yes I am up before dawn and organizing my downloads folder with a fiery passion. Why do you ask? :P Early morning insomnia is the worst, but I do appreciate the extra "me time" (and at least I went to bed pretty early last night).

I'm really getting somewhere with my cc organizing lately. I've decided to take a long, hard, honest look at what I actually use in-game. I'm limiting my Simgaroop hair recolours to one hue of each hair colour (making an exception for redheaded aliens, who look better with bright red, and I'm a little torn on the browns), deleting all the pretty-but-unnatural eyecolours (so no more townies with bright purple eyes), Maxis-match eyebrows (when I only ever use the three default shapes), and eye/nose/mouth shaders/corners, face wrinkles, nail polishes, bazillion glasses recolours, and maybe even some of the freckles (maybe). And that's just BodyShop!

I finally downloaded Homecrafter as a way of weeding out the last few walls and floors in colours I don't use, but I'm a little stuck on the object recolours. I did some hunting around, and the only method of identifying individual object recolours seems to be SimPE, and then deleting them from the downloads folder. Am I missing something? I'd love to be able to view and delete them all in one go.

Whelp... back to work! XD

I originally prepared this entry on June 19, 2008, but didn't ever get around to posting it. I think I wasn't quite satisfied with it, and was planning to rework it before sharing. There also appear to be spots where I planned to add text and/or images. At any rate, I never got around to it, so I thought I'd finally share it as-is.

I've always loved the cheeky art historical references in the Sims 2 wall hangings category (the sculpture category has some too, but I didn't get to those in this entry), so I decided to highlight a few of them for those who might not be as familiar with the source material. This post really only scratches the surface, so feel free to chime in with your own favourites in the comments. (Sidenote: This curator sim was an original character who no longer exists, named Wavey Oleander. She finally gets her one chance to shine now.)

Does anyone know of a hack conflict or issue that came up with later EPs that prevents a business owner from assigning an employee as a chef? This has been happening to me, both pre- and post-reinstall of my game. I have no problem with assigning the lot owner to work as chef, but I believe I need an employee in place so that the lot is functional when visited by another sim.

I did some searching, but turned up nothing (or nothing recent and relevant, anyway — I have a stove on the lot). I'll pull out all my hacks and see if that does anything, but first I'd like to "ask the audience" (lame and outdated joke is lame and outdated. :P) to see if there's a known issue that I'm missing here.

Thanks in advance for your help! ^_^

I'm struggling with this rebuild. At first I was going to package up all the sims that have been born in the those neighborhoods and share them and then do the same for my edited lots, but every time I load the game to do so, I lose steam fast. I've now settled on only packaging up characters and lots that I absolutely can't do without. So that means any story characters that have already been featured (and one that hasn't — Phi's mystery baby), and maybe some lots (the Summerdream place comes to mind), but everything else will be played through and made over again. That'll take some time, but it'll be far less tedious than piecing it together bit by bit.

I think I'm going to start by playing the fresh megahood to give myself a chance to see what I truly miss from my other game. I'm going to keep my cc (though I'm paring that down quite liberally), but I want to try to use the bare minimum of hacks and things like that. That brings me to my question of the day (and it's a classic one):

If you were going to start over with only a handful of hacks, which ones would you consider essential?

I've been thinking about the Good Genes III contest at GoS, and what really interests me in it is not wondering if the ugly would breed out (I think we all knew it would, given three generations), but which Maxis sim features you're left with. Planning for those three faces to blend with an attractive (and hopefully unique) final result is what made it so interesting to me. A lot of people go the Face One/Face Two route, but are their sims interesting enough to win the contest? Pretty is pretty, but what stands out enough to win? It remains to be seen, I guess. I know I'm more interested in seeing the diamonds in the rough, making pretty from unexpected gene choices. I'd like to see people receive bonus points for using a sim like Chester Gieke or Malcolm Landgraab, but lose points for every Brandi, Ajay, Don, or Cyd (or any other Face One/Two type).

Speaking of odd gene choices, I'm surprised that so many people have used Oberon (he's at least as popular as Don Lothario), because his nose is so wide and he's just not as conventional as the other sims that get re-used frequently. Also, Lilith Pleasant gets used a LOT and have you ever seen what that nose looks like on a male sim? It's intense. I'm really surprised that I'm the only one so far (I think...) that has used Ripp Grunt. He has really attractive features (for a man, at least... his daughters need to worry about the chin). Are any of the choices surprising you?

I've been thinking about devising my own variation on a Maxis sim breeding challenge, but have people start with Face One and aim to remove it, but still end up with something attractive. I'm not sure I'm up for the work of designing it, but it'd be something fun to do. Perhaps I'll suggest it for a Maxis_taste challenge.

I've been doing a massive amount of clean up to my downloads folder, especially where hair is concerned. This is really helping with loading times, but creates other problems. Somewhere along the line, I seem to have removed the hair I was using on Kimberly Cordial by accident and now I can't remember where it came from. It's so frustrating! I know it's a free Peggy hair, and located the mesh name from her website, but is it just me or do her hairs have no titles? Neither her site nor the hair wiki seem to refer to it by any name I could search. No, that would be too easy. *sighs*

I was sure it was one of simgaroop's older retextures (and that would make sense, because I've removed a LOT of her hairs, due to the fact that I had about a million of them in my game), but I can't locate it on Simlish Creations, her journal posts, her photobucket album, or her mediafire folders. I've gone just about mad. :P

I mostly just wanted to bitch, but this is the hair I'm referring to, just in case you might recognize it. Cleaning up your downloads folder is hard work!

I've also been making use of a lot of the new clothing mesh defaults that are being created lately. I especially love the sets that [livejournal.com profile] dhearest and [livejournal.com profile] le_plat_du_jour have been releasing, but there are many other great finds out there. If you haven't already, check out [livejournal.com profile] le_plat_du_jour's amazing resource, [livejournal.com profile] sims2_defaults. This helps with conflicting defaults, which is so very helpful.

Has anyone else been trying out these defaults? I'm not going to replace everything, since some of the questionable stuff can be funny, and I need some for character reasons. For example, nobody has replaced the basegame afbodydress with anything equally mom-ish, and there are very few options for this age group as it is, so it stays). I'd love to see some nice Maxis-match work-appropriate defaults for the basegame suits, since they're so often used as work clothing for the various careers.

Some of the basegame textures and meshes are just bad, though. There's no two ways around it. I hate, hate, hate everything about afbottomflairedpantssandals, for one example, and I'm sure I'm not alone on that. What are your most hated basegame meshes?

I've always been fascinated with the odd little witch cabin on the "hidden" (it is if you don't have a camera mod, anyway) Watervista Palace lot on the edge of Belladonna Cove. It really begs for more development, and gets me thinking about the witches and their mythology. I've been planning to build up more of a hidden town for the witches out there, where the Cordial's actually live, when they're not blending in with the rest of society as normal sims.

I was working on the lot this morning, when I noticed something really interesting... )

Inspired by [livejournal.com profile] simgaroop's recent cleaning of her downloads folder, and also by some sweet new cc I've been finding, I've decided to take on the ridiculous task of reorgnizing my own downloads folder. It's organized, but huge, and there are WAY too many folders and subfolders. I'm going to stick to broad categories like buy mode, bodyshop, sims, hacks, etc., and then organize by creator, with no subfolders. I've started already, with the hacks and bodyshop content (well, except for hair! *sweats* I'm working my way up to the hair, clothing and buy modes). I'm finding duplicates and things I don't really use anymore and all that good stuff. Spring cleaning! ^_^

I'm also going to give some serious thought to FINALLY creating a resource post. I've been planning to do it for years, but have never gotten around to it. I often find great things from other simmer's resource lists, so it's only fair to give back and spread the info to others.

And I finally added ACR 2.0! I really don't know why I didn't do that already. Let the fun begin!
strangetomato: (johnnyrippinsane)
I decided to finally try my hand at recreating my house in build mode, and even drew up a rough floorplan based on a walk around the house, but when I went into the game, it crashed on me. Twice. I went to one of my custom hoods, placed an empty lot, and clicked on it to build. Before it loaded, it crashed. It's very frustrating. Maybe I'll try one more time in a different hood. I have no idea what might be going wrong.

If only the game didn't take so long to load. *sigh*

ETA: I tried the same thing in Belladonna Cove... and it worked! I guess Chronic Town must be cursed or something.

I'm curious. Is there anything that you're very consistent about in your sim world? I'm also curious to know why.

I really do always add a compost bin right next to the outdoor garbage can, and I use the hack that directs service sims to use it. I'm a dedicated composter in real life, so my sim world has my ideal scenario of curbside compost pickup (which is not something we have in my municipality, but one can dream).
strangetomato: (johnnyrippinsane)
Me: Hey, come look at these cute little sim toddlers! See? They got most of the mother's best features, so I've pretty much bred all the ugly out of this family.

SO: Hitler would be proud.

Me: Well, when you put it that way...
strangetomato: (Default)
I'd post this to [livejournal.com profile] wcif_sims, but I've already posted once today, so I thought I'd ask here (though I'll post there tommorrow if this doesn't work out). I'm looking for an extracted version of the Nervous Subject "clone" found in the data of Strangetown. He's one of those unlinked dead characters, so I'm also open to advice on how to extract him myself. I have no idea, and I'm a bit wary of messing around with SimPE.

As someone who's already using the idea of cloning Nervous in a story, you can see how I'd like to use him in a wink and nod sort of way, right?
strangetomato: (Default)
Last night I had a dream about cheating on my SO with some guy I recently found attractive. While we were trying to work out the logistics of it all (damn "woohoo" dreams never really work out for me that way), my SO walked in and caught us in the act. Then, to determine how serious the situation was, I checked his relationship panel.

*blinks*

Umm, what? That can't be a good sign...

In other news, I'm thinking of doing up a story recap, since it was recently suggested by Petchy as something that might help potential newcomers to the story, as it grows ever more complicated and unwieldy by the update, to the point where even I occasionally need to be reminded of my own plot points (no, really...). The problem is, I'm feeling way too lazy to do it. There's just so much of it to summarize at this point, and it feels like a chore (and honestly, part of me feels like they should just read the back chapters if they want in on the story, but I know how daunting it must be, and I want to be welcoming instead of being a dick about it).

Also, how should the summary even be organized? Should I do it by character? By plot arc? By household? I have no idea. I'm okay with some of the plot points being mostly forgotten and dropped, since I now see them as questionable missteps, and maybe rehashing it all will just draw attention to all the plot holes? Should I just go ahead and draw attention to them so we can all laugh at them? Again, I have no idea what to do.

Any suggestions? Do you think I should do this? I already have a bit of a chapter-by-chapter summary in the story directory, but that doesn't cover all the little details. Do people really need to know these details? Is there anything you, personally, are confused about? Lay it on me, dear readers and friends.
