I learned something new and interesting tonight. My SO and I were listening to Scene Creamers on our i-pod, and they have this song called Housework for Three, right? I couldn't help but notice that the song was obviously about a threesome ("housework for three, nice work if you're the one in between"), so I started musing on how housework could possibly be sexual innuendo (I've used "polishing the brass" before, so I figured it was there somewhere). Then my SO informs me that "menage" actually means "housework" in French, as well as "household." (He did French immersion in school and his maternal grandmother was French.) In Kindergarten, the teacher used to announce that it was "time for menage" and they would clean up the classroom.

It sort of puts a new spin on Johnny's constant insistence that Ripp should partake in doing more housework with him and Phi, don't you think? If he's doing a French course in uni, he could be in for a shock (and Ripp would be all over THAT kind of housework).

LMAO! I knew what menage a trois was, but didn't realise it actually meant housework. Damn, now I'm wondering how the word menage got twisted to mean sex :P

Actually *adjusts glasses*, menage a trois translates to "household of three" and it doesn't necessarily have anything to do with sex, but it often does. It became more or less interchangeable with sexual threesome somewhere along the line, because I guess most households of three are involved with each other sexually. Often, though, it's a couple and one of their lovers, not a completely unified threesome.

And housework too. Lots of housework. :P

LMAO. That is hilarious. I'm a french immersion student, and I never made the connection. Now that I think about it, I did know in the back of my mind that menage meant housework, but... Well, I guess that goes to say that my mind isn't totally in the gutter. XD

In fact, ménage means "cleaning" but if you say "un ménage à trois", it means a threesome. ^^

Yeah, that's how it works. The word has a slightly different meaning when on its own like that. Menage a trois doesn't translate exactly to mean a sexual threesome, though. It refers to a living situation rather than a sexual practise.
