Chapter Nineteen
Part Two
Jill Smith was feeling pretty good about herself. She was on top of the world.
Her encounter with Ripp had been wonderful, even if it had been rudely interrupted by Johnny. It had gone much better than she had expected. Much, much better. She had obviously prepared for the possibility, and hoped that she would be able to kiss him or make some sort of contact with him, but she hadn't really believed that it would happen. Well, maybe she thought he would brush up against her as he stood up from the table, or something, but definitely not that. Not what had actually happened.
She wondered what would happen next. Would she hear from Ripp? Had he been serious about her coming to see his band play? Maybe he would give her a call. She kept one ear waiting to hear the phone ring at all times.
She settled in for an evening bubble bath to get a little privacy, so she could better think about it all.
Jill had been playing and replaying her kiss with Ripp over and over again in her mind. Every detail was precious. It wasn't as soft and romantic as she'd imagined, but that was just a silly little girl's fantasy, anyway. The truth of the matter was far more exciting. Limbs searching. Tongues meeting. Sharp intakes of breath, almost whimpering with desire. Rough stubble leaving burn marks on her face. The feeling of him, ready and wanting her, pressed against her body.
It made her feel like a real woman. That's what it was like to be with a man. You had to expect some roughness.
But he had been gentle too. Also very gentle, cradling her in his arms.
Jill sank down into the warm bubbles and played out one of the many variations of how she imagined it may have ended, if only her stupid prudish asshole of a brother hadn't showed up.
"Jill, are you finished in there yet?" It was Buck. He was waiting outside the bathroom door, and his knock jolted her back to reality.
"Ah - Almost... just give me... five more minutes, okay?"
He made an affirmative sound, and left her to sink back into the warm water and her fantasy. She closed her eyes and let it wash over her.
After she had dried off and dressed herself, she returned to her bedroom, where she found Buck patiently waiting for her.
"Enjoy your bath?" he asked.
"Yes." She giggled. "Why, yes, I did."
He furrowed his brow in confusion, unsure of how to react to this random girly weirdness from Jill.
"So, why the smile, Jill?"
"Oh, nothing..." She grinned mischievously. "I can't tell you."
"Why not?"
"It's a secret."
"You can tell me! It's just me, Jill." Buck got up from the bed.
"It's a secret, Buck." She looked away, bashfully, which was odd for Jill. "That's the whole point. I'm not going to tell you my secret. It's private."
"I thought we didn't keep secrets from each other, Jill."
"Well, this is different." She paused. "It's bigger. A real secret. I'm sure that you have things that you keep from me like that, am I right?"
"Well, yeah... I guess I do."
"Of course you do." Jill was thinking about the one obvious secret that he might be keeping. The big unanswered question. She went silent for a moment, as she gave that some thought.
"You know..." She said, with a grin. "I might be convinced to tell you mine if you tell me yours."
"Errr, I don't know about that." The smile vanished from his face completely.
"Oh, why not?" She pleaded. "It would be fun. I wouldn't mind telling you, if you told me something in return. It's only fair, Buck."
"Well, maybe..."
"Oh, come on, Buck! Don't be such a wuss." Jill socked him with her tiny fists. He just laughed, since she had all the force of a gentle summer breeze.
"Okay." He sighed. "But not here. Can we go somewhere private?"
"My bedroom isn't private enough for you?"
"Your parents might come in..."
"Wow. Your secret must be better than I thought, Buck." She laughed. "I know! Let's go to your house. It's completely empty. We can have all the privacy we want there. You wanted to feed the fish anyway, right?"
They arrived at the Specter estate just as it was getting dark.
"Well, here we are," Johnny said, "Now what?" Ophelia silently surveyed the courtyard for a while before speaking.
"Well, I suppose we should go inside, and see if Olive is here."
"God, this place is fucking creepy."
"Are you scared, Rippy?" Johnny mocked, "I can hold your hand if you want..."
"Fuck you, Johnny. You're scared of this place too. Don't try to tell me you aren't."
"I'm not a frightened little girl, like you are."
Ripp snuck up behind Johnny and jumped at him. "Oooo-ooooo! Ichabod's gonna get you!"
Johnny yelped with fright.
"Oh, did I scare you, Johnny?" He laughed, "I'm so sorry!"
"It's not funny!" Johnny yelled.
"It's pretty fucking funny from where I'm standing."
"Who's not afraid of this place now, Johnny?" Ripp smiled as he continued to haunt Johnny with a terribly over-acted ghost impression.
"Okay! God!" he yelled, "This place scares the shit of me. Are you happy now?"
"I really fucking hope you brought a spare pair of panties."
"Shut up! One of us should go in there with Phi, don't you think?" He made a motion towards the door, which clearly stated that it would be him, and not Ripp.
"So, what? I get to stay out here and play with the fucking ghosts?"
"Look around... maybe there's something out here that will be informative to us."
"You took the easy job."
"Well, if Olive is here, it's not the easy job."
"Whatever, dicksmack."
Johnny hurried to catch up with Ophelia.
Ripp stood in place, hesitantly, but then felt a creeping sensation, and decided it was best to keep moving. He didn't want to give a ghost the opportunity to scare the piss out of him.
It was already too late for Ophelia to avoid a confrontation with a ghost.
"Are you okay, Phi?" Johnny asked as he caught up to her. She hadn't screamed, but he could see that she was in some emotional distress.
"Yes. I'm okay." She had been used to seeing ghosts when she lived here, but had forgotten just how frightening it was in the time since she had moved out on her own.
"Shall we go inside?" They opened the door and cautiously stepped inside to have a look around.
Ripp was talking to himself, mostly as a way to keep himself from being afraid, and complaining about how pointless it was to search around the courtyard. He was convinced that he wasn't going to find anything. Besides maybe a good haunting or two.
"How weird, Johnny." Ophelia said. "There doesn't seem to be any sign of Olive, but it does seem like someone has been here, doesn't it?"
"The bed was slept in. Or it seems that way."
"Yeah. It's so unusual. And Olive would have made the bed. She was always so strict about that. And the bathroom is a total mess. Not like Olive at all..."
"Yeah, it looks like Ripp was trying to give himself a shave in there, or something. Water everywhere... everything knocked over. If there's a big slimy clog of hair in the drain, then I'm saying it was definitely Ripp."
They continued walking across the house to where Ophelia's bedroom was.
"This place is definitely deserted," Johnny declared, "There's nobody here, Phi."
"But what about the mess and all that... " She wasn't convinced. She still had a feeling about it. "Someone's here, Johnny. Or they were. We have to keep looking."
"It's so weird being in your bedroom again," he said, looking around the familiar room. "It reminds me of when we first started dating."
"Yeah..." She smiled.
"It was always easier to do things over here, where nobody was really watching us." He said, as he pulled her closer. She smiled.
"Remember how we used to..."
Johnny nibbled his way along the length of her neck.
"Johnny... stop it." She protested, but her smiled betrayed her.
"That's not what you used to say..."
"Johnny... we should go make sure that Ripp is okay out there." Ophelia said. "It's not a good idea for him to be by himself."
"Okay."
Outside, Ripp was standing in the cemetery.
"Ripp? Did you find anything?"
He walked over to Johnny. "No, there's nothing here to find."
Johnny turned to Ophelia. "Looks like we're not going to be able to do much else here."
Behind them, Ripp screamed. It came out a lot higher and girlier than he would have liked. His friends both spun around to see if he was okay.
"Fuck!" he cried, "Could this place be any more fucking haunted?!"
"Are you okay?" Johnny asked.
"Well, I didn't piss myself, so I'd consider that kinda fucking okay, but I think my life was probably shortened by a day or two. Nothing too, too important..."
"Well, not to be an asshole about it, but that's what you get for trying to scare me earlier..."
"You're right, John. You are kinda being a fucking asshole about it."
"Really, Johnny..., " Ophelia scolded, "He could have died. It's not funny."
"I know," he said, "You're right, Phi. I'm being an idiot... I'm sorry, Ripp."
"It's okay, John. But can we please just get the fuck out of here now? Before I really do piss myself?"
"It's too dangerous here with all of these fucking ghosts about..." He said, grabbing Johnny tightly by the shoulders for leverage. "We should get Ophelia home and safely tucked into bed."
Johnny felt Ripp's arms shaking, and he knew that Ripp was really the one that needed to be tucked into bed with a night light left on. Ophelia was as tough as nails when it came to this stuff. She was hardly the one to worry about. He, also, wouldn't be sleeping alone in his own bed that night. Not a chance.
There was a sound in the distance, like mumbling, or groaning.
"Do you hear that?" Ophelia asked.
"Yeah, what was that? More ghosts?"
Johnny and Ripp both attempted to seem less frightened than they were, and walked around to investigate. Ripp looked around the corner of the building.
"Whoa! Over here, you guys!" he exclaimed, "Who the fuck it this?!"
"What's wrong with him?" Ophelia asked.
Nervous Subject was convulsing on the ground, his legs twitching and kicking around, and making some terrible, terrible sounds.
"He's... he's coming down off something, think." Ripp said. He hadn't exactly witnessed something this bad firsthand, but he wasn't without some knowledge on the matter.
"You mean, like a drug?!"
"Yes, Johnny! Like a fucking 'drug'." Ripp made the quotation marks with his fingers as he said it, mockingly.
"I would say some type of sedative. And probably something pretty fucking strong too. Like maybe a narcotic of some sort."
"I'm not really impressed that you know that."
"Johnny, everybody knows shit like that! They teach it in school!"
"Well, you seem like you know an awful lot about it, Ripp." And since when did Ripp pay attention in school? Johnny knew that Ripp's bandmates were pretty hard characters, and he had his suspicions.
"Do you want to fucking shut up for a second so we can try to help him, or what?!"
"What can we do, Ripp?" Ophelia asked, "We have to do something!"
"Well, the obvious solution, at least for now, would be to get him some more drugs before he bites off his fucking tongue or something!"
"How are we going to do that?!" She asked.
"We can't do that!" Johnny cried.
"Well, it would keep this from happening, Johnny! But you're right... we can't do that. We don't even know what he's been on."
"Ummm, and also - we don't have any drugs to give him, RIGHT, Ripp?!" Johnny glared at him.
"No, we DON'T, Johnny!" Even if he did have anything on him, Ripp wouldn't want to pull it out in front of Johnny. He also really didn't have anything. He hadn't touched anything evenly remotely like a drug since the other night. It had been a bit too much of a good thing, especially the next morning.
"We have to call someone for help!" Johnny said. "We don't know what to do, and he clearly needs help."
"Wait, Johnny! I don't know..." Ophelia was afraid. She wasn't sure that it was a good idea to bring someone into this situation until they knew what it was.
Nervous was aware of them standing there, observing him, but he wasn't sure if they were real or just more of his visions. They weren't really all that familiar to him, like the rest had been. Though, there was something about the girl. His mind wasn't focusing, tumbling from one disturbing thought to another, but he did recognize her. That little girl. But she wasn't a child anymore. It didn't make sense. Wasn't she supposed to be dead?
"Who the fuck would we even call?"
"My Mom's a nurse."
"We can't call your fucking mother, Johnny!"
"No!" Nervous yelped, causing them to jump. "D-D-Don't..."
"You don't want us to call anyone?" Ophelia asked him, as calmly as she could.
"N-N-Not... s-s-safe."
"See, Johnny? We can't fucking call someone!"
"Why isn't it safe? She prodded him. "Are you in some other sort of danger? What can we do to help you?"
Nervous made what seemed to be a nod, though it was hard to tell for sure, with all the twitching that he was doing.
"Who the fuck are you anyway?"
"N-N-N..." He couldn't get it out, but then it came out suddenly, all at once. "N-Nervous Subject." And he again tried to say something. "P-P-P... P-P-P-Pascal..."
"My uncle, Pascal?!"
"Well, you fucking heard the man, Johnny! How many Pascals do you know?"
Johnny picked up the phone and dialed his uncle's number.
"Hello?" Vidcund's abrupt voice answered.
"Uncle Vidcund - it's Johnny."
"Johnny?! What do you - What is it?"
"Can I speak with Uncle Pascal, please?"
"He's not feeling very well right now, Johnny. Can I pass on a message?"
"It's important. I really need to speak to him." Vidcund relented and put Pascal on the phone.
"Hi Johnny." He said, quietly. "This is a surprise. We don't hear from you that much..."
"Uncle Pascal... this is going to sound really weird, but I need you to come over to the Specter place - Don't say anything to anyone, okay? There is a guy here that asked us to call you, and he really needs some help. We're not really sure what to do." Pascal froze.
"A guy?! Who is he? What does he look like? Did he tell you his name?"
"He said his name is Nervous Subject." Pascal dropped the phone and ran out the door.
Elsewhere, another phone was ringing.
"Fuck." Ajay said, and pulled back from Erin for a moment. "Work again. They never leave me alone." She moaned underneath him.
"It might be important." Erin said, out of breath.
"They can wait... we're almost there, right?" They resumed their business.
The phone kept ringing.
"I'm going to kill whoever is calling." Ajay said as he stormed off to answer it, uncomfortably adjusting himself as he went.
"Hello?!" He said. "Ummm, yeah... she's here."
"That's weird." He said. "It's for you."
"Hello?" She answered, cautiously.
"Oh, hi... Circe. I didn't expect to hear from you."
"Yes, of course I heard the news. I'm not an idiot, you know. I do watch the news. Yes, I know that wasn't what you meant... nevermind. What do you want?"
"What... really?! No... are you sure? Well, what do you want me to do? Right now? Well, I was kinda in the middle of something... but okay. I'll be there."
Erin hung up the phone.
"I have to go..."
"Not so fast." Ajay moved up to her and grabbed a good handful.
"I'm not through with you yet."
Inside the empty Grunt home, Buck and Jill wandered around, nervously.
"So, here we are... nice and secret." Jill said, with a nervous laugh. "So, who goes first?"
Buck said nothing. He just looked straight ahead, like a deer in the headlights.
"Okay, I guess it will have to be me. God, this is hard..." She shuffled around a little, not looking him in the eyes. "My secret is that... I think I'm in love."
"You are?" Buck held his breath.
"Yeah, I'm in love." She blushed. "With Ripp."
Buck said nothing.
"I know... it's a little weird, since he's your brother, and we're best friends, but..." She noticed the look on his face. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing."
"Okay..." She said. There was obviously something wrong, but if he didn't want to tell her, what could she really do? She was sure he'd tell her if it was a really big deal. Maybe he thought it was a bad idea, just like Johnny did. Well, she didn't want to hear that. What she wanted to hear was Buck's secret.
"Well, tell me your secret."
"I can't."
"Sure, you can." She said. "C'mon, Buck! It's only fair."
"Well, Jill..." He said. "I'm in love too..."
This was it, she thought. He's finally going to tell me.
"... with you." He said, with his quiet, shy voice.
"What?"
"I'm in love with you, Jill."
Pascal looked at Nervous Subject's shaking body, and his eyes looked back at him with a frightened look in them. They had gotten him up and onto his feet, but he remained unable to communicate.
"How long as he been like this?" Pascal asked Johnny.
"We don't know, but he was like it when we got here."
"What is he even doing here?" Pascal wondered.
Ophelia had been wondered that very same thing since they had found Nervous, and she had a feeling that she knew the answer. She didn't know if she was being completely delusional, but she spoke her thoughts.
"I think..." They all turned to look at her.
"I think he's my cousin."
"Your COUSIN?!" Johnny exclaimed, "That can't be right..."
"Olive had a son. He was taken away..."
"Ummm, no offense, but he doesn't really look like he's related to you, Phi," Ripp said.
"I know that! He doesn't. But why else would he be here?"
"He could have just wandered here, Phi."
"Olive had a son. It wasn't just a rumour. I heard my parents talking about it when they didn't think that I was listening. He would have been about our age, maybe just a handful of years older. This Nervous Subject seems to be about that age, doesn't he?"
"Well, yes," Johnny said, "but I can't see how that -"
"No, she's right." Pascal said. They all stopped and looked at him.
"Or you very well might be right, Ophelia. He was being kept by the Beakers as a test subject. From what I've gathered, they took him in when he was a teenager, and he had been in the foster system before that, as far as I know, but he was off the records."
"And now he's here... and Olive is missing," Ophelia said.
"And Loki Beaker is dead," Johnny added.
"Yes, it seems like an odd series of events," Pascal mused.
Ophelia didn't think it was as much odd as it was disturbing. Ripp looked at her with concern, because he knew what she must be thinking. She spoke. "Look, Pascal. I don't think we should let anyone know that he's here. For his own safety. He said as much himself."
"I agree. Circe Beaker is still out there too, and we don't know what happened between him and the Beakers during that fire. I really doubt it was a kitchen fire like they said."
"Yeah. Like fuck it was," Ripp added.
"I'll look after him," Pascal said, "And I'll keep it to myself. I can say that I'm at work. I keep odd hours anyway. Vidcund won't get too suspicious."
"I can come to help you on the weekends," Ophelia offered, "I don't mind."
"Yes, that would be great, Ophelia." Pascal put his arm around Nervous' body and attempted to support much of his weight. "For now, we need to get him into bed. I'll run back to the house to grab a couple of things. I'm not sure if there is anything we can really do to stop this from happening, but we can minimize the damage, at least."
The three of them helped Pascal move Nervous Subject into the house, and they tucked him into bed.
Pascal looked down at him. He was so relieved that he was alive, and relatively free from harm. The relief was mixed with worry about his current condition, but Pascal was confident that Nervous would be okay.
Poor Nervous. His pale bare scalp looking so betrayed and exposed. Pascal knew that Nervous had been so proud of his mohawk, even though he never said so. He could tell by the way he used to run his fingers through it every so often. It was one thing that was all his. And the Beakers had taken even that away. Pascal cringed at the thought of what he must have gone through with the Beakers and then the fire, but that was all behind him now. Now, Nervous Subject was safe. Pascal would see to that.
He'd stay there through the night, just to be sure. He outlined a plan of action in his mind. How he could be back in time to wake Mint and send her to school, and them return before too long to check on Nervous again.
Nervous didn't seem to be registering much, but his eyes met Pascal's, and a brief recognition passed through them. He even seemed to smile, just a little.
With Nervous safely in bed, Pascal ran back to his house to get some supplies.
Ophelia looked down at Nervous Subject. Was this man really her cousin? She hoped so. If he was, that made him family. She thought she had lost all of her family members. Well, except for Olive, but with relatives like her, Ophelia would gladly go without. But Nervous... he might be someone that she could finally call family.
He wasn't like Olive. She could tell. There was something very different about him. Something special.
He was a good person.
"I'm so embarrassed!"
"Oh Buck, don't be embarrassed..."
"I want to die now. Spilling my guts, just to have you wanting my brother instead?"
"Buck..."
He fell back onto the couch, devastated.
"I'm so stupid! Why did I think you would want someone like me?"
"Don't say that, Buck! There's nothing wrong with you. Any girl would be lucky to have someone like you."
"But not you..."
"Well, Buck. I've never thought about you like that. I..." She took a deep breath. "Of course I like you. I like you more than anyone else in the world. I'd rather be with you than any other person. I just thought..."
"You thought I was a fag, right, Jill?! Just like everyone else."
"Don't say it that way, Buck."
"God, Jill..."
"Look, I did have my suspicions. It's not like there's anything wrong with it."
"No, but I'm not gay, Jill! Why does everyone -"
"Buck, it's just that you never mentioned girls."
"I didn't mention guys either! It's because I don't care about other girls... just you. That's why I didn't talk about other girls, Jill." All this time, he had thought he was being completely obvious. Too obvious.
"Buck, I'm sorry." How could she have been such an idiot? Jill felt so terrible, and so mean, for telling Buck about Ripp now. She should have forced Buck to tell his secret first.
"I know." He frowned. "You're sorry because you're not interested."
"No. I mean that I'm sorry for not paying attention."
She took his hand. "You're my best friend, Buck. And I should have noticed."
Could she feel more than that for Buck? She didn't know. She hadn't given it much thought. She had always thought of Buck as someone that was separate from sexuality. If she had thought it was a possibility, would she have developed feelings for him herself? She really wasn't sure.
But she would find out. She felt like she owed him at least an effort. She owed Buck at least that much.
So she kissed him.
There, in his abandoned family home, Jill Smith kissed Buck Grunt for the very first time.
It felt different from when she had kissed Ripp. It wasn't as thrilling, like a release after a long build up, but it did feel warm and soft and comforting.
It felt like a beautiful idea that had occurred to her out of nowhere. Like finally realizing the way to answer that essay question on a final exam that was worth 30 points. Like she had found that the answer had been given away in the wording of the multiple choice questions.
It felt like her favourite song being played on the radio when she least expected it.
It felt right.
"Jill..." Buck sighed. "You didn't have to -"
"I wanted to."
"What about Ripp?"
"Forget about that," she said, "It isn't important. I'm an idiot."
"But you said -"
"Look, I don't know what I'm talking about. Who the hell knows what they're really feeling? It's so confusing. I just... I just know that I want to kiss you again."
So she did.
She kissed him, more deeply this time, opening his mouth with her lips. She explored his mouth, tentatively, and he responded by doing the same. Carefully, and thoughtfully.
It felt even better the second time.
"Jill..." Buck sighed. He was about to tell her exactly how beautiful and miraculous she was, and how he had loved her since the moment he first met her, and how he wanted to be with her every moment of every day for the rest of his life, but instead, he just smiled.
"Shhh...," she said, "We can talk about this later."
She moved him back to the couch.
He was like a shy flower that was opening in the morning sunlight. She hadn't even noticed it moving, but then suddenly it was in full bloom.
How could she not appreciate his beauty?

Date: 2008-02-02 12:30 am (UTC)This is officially my favorite chapter. Pascal gets Nervous under his wing, Buck gets his girl, and Jill gets a clue!
I'm glad that Ripp (hopefully) isn't going to be breaking her heart, and that Johnny (hopefully) isn't going to have to break Ripp's head. And I REALLY hope that Pascal can get Nervous back on his feet safely.
Bad idea Circe, you really think Grimmy isn't keeping an eye on your actions?
I hope you don't mind, I friended your journal so I can keep tabs on the updates!

Date: 2008-02-02 12:39 am (UTC)Yes, Jill gets a clue. More like Jill gets a smack across the face by reality. It's a confusing situation, I would imagine, but yes, she had a bit of a wake up call there.
And we all feel much better now that Pascal is there to look after Nervous, don't we? (I know I do.) Not only that, Nervous also has Ophelia now too, and she is always a good person to have in your corner. Unassuming, but not to be underestimated.
Circe knows what she can and can't do under Death's watchful eye, and she's not going to go anywhere near Nervous. Not herself, anyway. She's also more than a touch frightened of him right now, if Circe can be said to be frightened of anything.
I don't mind at all! In fact, I encourage it. If you want to follow the updates, that's the best way to do it. Thanks for reading!

The trio didn't find Olive's grave in the graveyard?
And you mentioned feeding the fish!! :D

Date: 2008-02-02 03:36 am (UTC)It's good to see Nervous with a strong support system after everything he's been through. It bothers me a little that the game doesn't recognize Ophelia and Nervous as relatives (you can make them "kissing cousins" if you want to), and I'd like to fix it. I definitely see them becoming family to each other, especially since they are both family aspiration.
You might be right about the fate of a Jill/Ripp relationship. Or any relationship that involves Ripp, for that matter. It's good to see that Buck had the courage to tell Jill, even after she told him about Ripp. But there is still that whole thing with Ripp hanging in the background, though Jill might choose to push it aside and not even tell Buck. Or being so open with each other, maybe she will...

And to see Pascal reunited with Nervous makes me all sorts of happy! My heart sank though, when I saw Ripp looking at what appears to be either his mother's or father's gravestone. And it's worse, because he's definitely not ready to share that info with his friends.
It's unnerving how dense Johnny is about drug education though, automatically assuming the worst of his best friend. Why can't he ever give Ripp the benefit of the doubt on things? This just makes him seem a bit jerkish, and worse, because he's not remotely apologetic about things. I guess I have a thing against guys who act like Johnny. I know Johnny has his good points, but sometimes, bad points speak louder than the good points. That said, he did do a good job of making Ripp understand that you don't mess with your sister, during part 1.
Those are my first thoughts. Thank you so much for posting part 2. I've been looking forward to it since Part 1 (didn't want to say anything then, because I wanted to see how the chapter ended). You're a great story teller. Especially since you give such depth to your characters. They're not all Mary-Sues, and I appreciate that. So thanks.

Date: 2008-02-02 04:55 am (UTC)I'm glad to have Buck's feelings out in the open too. It felt like such a long time coming. Jill does realize that Buck is a good guy for her, at least as a friend. She always did say that she liked him more than anyone else.
Ripp doesn't know that it was his mother's gravestone (it was Lyla's), but he is thinking about the fact that both of his parents are very likely dead. He doesn't like to talk about that sort of thing with his friends. He'd rather push it aside and carry on and try to be happy.
Well, was Johnny wrong to assume the worst of Ripp? Not really. He's suspicious, and he's worried about him. It wouldn't be so bad if it was just a little "bubble blowing" (though Johnny is more of a "just say no" type of character, so he's not really cool with that either), but Ripp has been dabbling in some harder things. Johnny just worries, but you're right. He can be a jerk about things. But Ripp also needs Johnny to be a sort of parent figure to him.
Thank you. I'm glad you don't think that they're Mary Sues. *snicker* (Well, I could bring my "perfect" simself in as a character... just kidding. And even idealized, I would make a poor Mary Sue.) I like characters to have flaws. I'm sure they aren't perfectly drawn characters or 100% believable, but I think they have some interesting hang ups and issues. I hope to make them complicated enough to be interesting.

Date: 2008-02-02 01:19 am (UTC)Also, I'm glad Nervous was found and I'm so sad that Ripp saw a grave that made him sad. I'm thinking it was either his dad's or his mom's? I just don't know which one.
I love that my comment is all geared to Jill/Ripp...I guess I'm really into that part of the story lol. Anyways, my comments never come out the way I wish they would...but I really love your story. :)

Date: 2008-02-02 05:01 am (UTC)The grave was his mother's, but Ripp doesn't know that. He was just thinking about how it could be, and may as well be. It just so happens that it actually was.
Thank you. I really appreciate the comments, and there's nothing wrong with putting your Jill/Ripp feeling out there. I'm listening. :)

Date: 2008-02-02 01:38 am (UTC)First off, thank you for considering the fish. WON'T SOMEONE THINK OF THE FISH!
Jill got interrupted while getting her quim on. *snicker* If Buck only knew what she was doing in the bathtub, he'd faint.
I had a good feeling we'd see some "first" in this update, too. Hee hee.
And FINALLY, I get a Pascal/Nervous fix. I was starting to feel like Jill in the bubble bath, all blue clitty and waiting for sweet sweet release (ok, that's so gross but I just can't bring myself to erase it, so you get to read it).
How perfect, all the love and its February. Did you plan that?
Really, this update was great. Gratuitous hiney pics, sexual content, great pics (of surprised face Pascal and that one of passed out Nervous was great, too), humor, love, and the fish got fed.
I really can't say anything else.

Date: 2008-02-02 03:30 am (UTC)I know those fish have some hardcore fans. I have to give some fanservice, right? (Oh man... now I have to figure out how to actually do that with a straight face. Fishservice! *snort*)
Jill was jilling off. *snicker* She lives up to her name, right? Well, like you would, right? And you're right. Buck would have blushed quite a bit, if he only knew...
You know... this wasn't actually the "first" that I was referring to. *wink*
*snort* I have never had a more inappropriate mental image after reading a comment. I knew you'd be pleased to see your sweet darlings together at last. It can only get better from here.
Yes, I'm so concerned about Valentine's Day (which I never actually "celebrate"). But to be honest, I did think about that a little bit. There is some significant payoff happening in February, the month of love. I may even time another update to fall appropriately on the actual day for shits and giggles, if my timing and all allows it.
Thanks. Gratuitous hiney is always a good thing, and if you think that was sexual content... wait for the alien sexual content that I have coming. Yes, we get to learn all about those sexy, sexy aliens! And what they do to the poor sims once they suck them up from their telescopes.
And yes, the fish got fed. Everyone is happy.

Date: 2008-02-02 01:42 am (UTC)Fan-damn-tastic! I love it!
Pascal's eyes looked like they were going to pop out of his head when he was on the phone. Nervous will be in a much better place now. He's got Pascal to look out for him and Ophelia. As you said earlier, she's unassuming, but not to be underestimated. I think she's really very strong, she's had to be. I just love how, when they find Nervous, she keeps a level head while Johnny snarks are Ripp because he knows so much about drugs. LOL! At least One of them can stay focused!
Poor Ripp being scared by the ghost. Some of the ghosts on that lot really seem to be super pissed and will go out of their way to scare anybody and everybody. I realize most of them didn't die naturally and that's probably why but it just seems to me that certain ones haunt with a lot more frequency and intensity then others. At least, that's what I've noticed when I've played that lot.
Also, the pictures of Ripp standing in front of the one tombstone...that wasn't the Generals, was it? He looks so sad there I think it is. Poor Ripp.
Jill and Buck. :DD What can I say? I have to agree with the comment of Jill gets a clue. Of course she's been so caught up in her happily-ever-after dreams with Ripp that she couldn't see what was happening right under her nose. And why did my mind just jump to a line from The Wizard of Oz? The one Dorothy said about the next time she goes looking for her heart's desire she won't look further then her own backyard, or something like that. Buck is just so absolutely sweet. It's not often you can get your heart broken and mended all in the same space of time by the same person.
Wonderful!!

Date: 2008-02-02 02:39 pm (UTC)Pascal has HUGE eyes, doesn't he? Part of it might be the small face, but no... they're huge. I have to put him next to Ripp and see who has the bigger eyes, but my money is on Pascal, I think (and Jill also has very large eyes).
Ophelia is certainly the most sensible and focussed of the three, and she does have a lot of strength. More than most people realize. The boys probably know it, but they seem to like to pretend that it's them that is looking after her, and not the other way around. *snicker* Silly boys.
There are a lot of angry ghosts on that lot. I don't think that any of them died of natural causes, thanks to Olive. The teen girl that you see in some of the shots was a new addition - a downtownie that came home from school with Ophelia, who died of fright. I decided to keep her there, but she's a family sim and they get really pissed off when they die before they get to have a family. She was the one who haunted both Ripp and Ophelia. She's really angry.
Ripp was a lot more shook up by his ghostly encounter than Ophelia was. Again, she's the tough one, and she's used to it. The tombstone was actually his mothers, but his father's is there too, not that he knows it. But maybe he did sense something there. Looking out over a sea of unmarked graves would have to may you reflective like that.
Yes, you're right. Jill couldn't see the forest for the trees. She wasn't paying attention. They make an excellent pair in many ways. Awww, that's so true. Jill broke his heart, but then she clumsily glued it back together. Buck is lucky to have such a good friend.

Oh and I would be just like Ripp at the Specter house. I'm SO scared of ghosts (and spiders...) I really hope that Nervous Subject will be allright, but with Pascals care how can he not?

Date: 2008-02-02 02:52 pm (UTC)You're certainly not the only one that thought that Buck swung that way. Most of the characters in the story did too, or else didn't know. But no, he likes girls. Or, more accurately, he likes "girl"... just one girl. He's all about Jill.
Having had a couple of (fairly minor) ghostly encounters in the past, I have to agree with you. Whenever something becomes remotely supernatural, I want to get out of there as quickly as possible (I agree on the spiders too - they freak me out).
Yes, Nervous should have no trouble bouncing back now, even though it might take him some time. His odds have greatly improved from when he was lying on the ground with the harsh sun beating down on him. He's safely in bed and Pascal will see to it that he gets the necessities of life.

Date: 2008-02-02 02:15 am (UTC)I’m so very glad to see that Buck DOES have a thing for Jill. They’re very cute together and the fact that he truly LOVES her makes me so happy. I hope things work out between them and I’m glad Jill seems to be genuinely into it. Ripp/Jill is cute in it’s own way, but in the end I just see him breaking her heart. But Jill’s been harboring that crush on Ripp for years, will a relationship with Buck be enough to undo all of that? Or will Jill find herself with Ripp again in the future?
The Spectre place is creepy. I love Ophelia’s iron backbone when it comes to going inside and Johhny and Ripp’s more timid approaches. Gotta love strong female leads. Also, it’s a good thing that Olive isn’t alive - she’d have murdered Johnny and Ophelia during that whole little make-out session. Way to stay focused guys.
Oh poor Ripp. Was it the General’s grave or Lyla’s?
I also have to say that I adore how much Johnny and Ripp touch one another. Haha! Ripp is such a touchy feely guy and you’d expect Johnny to kind of push him away when he gets to close, but he’s always okay with it. Their friendship, much like Ripp and Ophelia’s, always seems like it could topple over into something more.
Hurray for our detectives! They have found a clue! Nervous Subject! And hurray for Pascal! Finally things seem to be looking up for Nervous!
And now Ophelia has found Nervous. A cousin. The last shred of family she has left. I hope they can find some sort of comfort in each other. Death’s son and the girl that lived. Also I really hope there’s a place for Ophelia’s snapdragons in the story. I love the idea that she’s kind of made herself into this healing figure in contrast to theme of death that surrounds the rest of her family.
I like this update, because it’s fairly happy. I always love seeing characters catch a break or two. Nervous has Pascal, Buck has his lady, Johnny and Phi got to neck a little and Ripp...well he didn’t really seem to have that great a time, but with any luck he’ll get something worthwhile in the future.

Date: 2008-02-02 03:26 pm (UTC)You had Buck figured out pretty well. Noticing how Jill wasn't wearing a bra, and those little things. Buck would just give Jill these looks too (if you notice some shots from their dinner at the Smiths, he's often looking at her). I wonder if Jill realizes the difference between the actual love that Buck has for her and the attraction that Ripp was showing towards her.
You're very right about the lingering effects of a crush that intense. Jill has that as a vulnerability. She will remain attracted to Ripp, even though she's now sexually involved with his brother. Maybe it will fade over time, or maybe... it leaves the possibility for more drama out there. (Darn those Grunt boys! They were nothing but trouble moving in next door.)
There's nothing like a strong female lead. Johnny and Ripp talk a good game, but that's about it. Ophelia doesn't talk so much. She gets things done. You're right about the little make-out session between Johnny and Ophelia, though. Don't they watch horror movies? *snort* Well, now they can be sure that Olive is gone, since they aren't dead.
It was Lyla's grave. Ripp doesn't know it, but that doesn't really even matter. He doesn't even get to know where her grave is (since he does assume that she is most likely dead). You know that he'd want to bring flowers to it, at least.
Ripp is very touchy feely. He's just a very physical person. Very focussed on the body (and other people's bodies, obviously). Johnny and Ophelia are both quite used to it by now, so they don't think anything of it. They know that it's just Ripp being Ripp, and it's comforting to touch people. They like it when he does that. Johnny might push him away if he overstepped his boundaries, but clearly he hasn't done that yet. Are they teetering on the edge? That remains to be seen. Intimacy is a sliding scale.
*snicker* Detectives. It nearly turned into an episode of Scooby-Doo there for a while, didn't it?
It's such a good thing for both Nervous and Ophelia to find each other. Ophelia might be able to deal with all the death in her life more easily, if she is able to face it head on. Nervous is so connected to it, that he may be able to help her (when he finally comes around to talking about it). And for Nervous, Ophelia is an example of someone who actually escaped the grisly fate spelled out by his dreams. And she has learned to cope with life, even with so much death in her past. And now, they have each other, as family. As odd as that family may be.
The flowers are at least symbolic of rebirth and life (among other things - flowers have so much going for them as symbols), but I do think that her snapdragons will be healing in a more direct way. Ophelia herself is the one with healing properties, in many ways.
I love when I finally get to include happy moments, or even just everyday, common moments (like the three at home in their apartment), amid all the drama. The drama was pretty high this last little while, so it might ease off just a little now. Well, the physical drama, anyway... we always have room for more emotional drama.
Don't you worry about Ripp. He swings back pretty easily, at least on the surface. He has a few bright spots coming up for him.

Date: 2008-02-02 02:26 am (UTC)And I especially love Buck, whether his romance with Jill works out or not. Ah, General Buzz, look who has turned out to be the strongest of your children!! (Talk about blind spots)
I like Ophelia more all the time as she grows into her own strength. I love the parallel of her nurturing the very caring Nervous. (Should we be thinking of him as Osiris now?)
And I am glad that Jill got her moment with Ripp - now that she knows she *could* have had him, she can make a real decision without it "what might have been" hanging over her
I am impressed that you can give them such depths and tell their stories so openly, and yet keep surprising us.

Date: 2008-02-02 04:15 pm (UTC)You're right about Johnny. He's so relatively free from pain in his life, that he can forget what his friends have to deal with every day. They don't actually talk about it that much (to him), so maybe he forgets. He has his own issues too, but not quite in the same league.
Buck really is the strongest of the Grunts in many ways, especially from an emotional point of view (but since when do Grunts care about something so trivial as emotions, right?). General Buzz did seem to come to realize that in the end, at least somewhat. His thoughts about Buck as was dying were that he wasn't really worried about how he would cope with his life. He figured that Buck knew what he wanted out of life, and he would be fine.
That's so true. If Jill's crush on Ripp remained unrequited, she might long for him even more. But it's also true that she did get a taste for it, so she knows what she's missing now... but overall, it is better to have gotten what you wanted on some level.
Thank you. I try my best. The characters continue to grow and open up to themselves (and me), so it changes for me too as I write them. I have changed my plans on several occasions, because the character just changed their path.

May I just comment on the mechanics behind one particular shot... the one of Nervous smiling up from the pillow. I can only think of one point when that animation's used. Heehee. Who was the lucky sim? :D
no subject
Date: 2008-02-02 04:43 pm (UTC)Ahhh, yes. The hair cutting scene. You can imagine how he felt running his hands through her hair, can't you? Such intimate contact. *smile* I had a feeling that you knew where I was going with Buck, based on some of the things that I said. I'm like you, though... I'd rather wait and see instead of saying what I expect.
Actually, you'll notice that Nervous is on the wrong side of the bed for the "cuddling in bed" interaction, which I assume is what you're talking about (that doesn't have to be after woohoo either, plenty of sims that are just best friends will do that). Nervous just saw someone he likes enter the room, and he got that glazed over look in his eyes, and sometimes they turn to look at them too, even in the middle of another interaction (like turning to sleep), so it was pretty random. I'm glad I caught it.

Date: 2008-02-02 05:29 pm (UTC)It won't be easy for Jill to just forget about Ripp completely, but that doesn't mean she can't recognize a good thing when she sees one. And Buck is right there. Ripp isn't actually going to call Jill up, and she will be with Buck every day. That will work to Buck's favour.
Nervous and Pascal do love each other, at least on some level, and they will be able to further explore that relationship now.
Thank you! :)

Date: 2008-02-02 04:07 pm (UTC)Ophelia shouldn't get her hopes up to much about having a family again. Poor Nervous is so confused right now he probably won't be what she wants.
Great chapter. I can't wait for more and to find out Erin's reaction to her new "job".

Date: 2008-02-02 05:53 pm (UTC)There is that worry that Jill might do that, isn't there? But it's pretty early into it to really know. Jill and Buck are very close friends, though, so it's unlikely that she would do something intentionally cruel to him.
Well, how do you know what Ophelia wants from Nervous? It might not be all that much, beside just being there. Ophelia is a pretty sensible girl. She won't exception Nervous to be more than he can be, and she still has her "other family" to turn to for support, so she's not likely to seek that from him.
We'll get to have some fun with Erin's new lot in life. And what exactly she will be inheriting from the Beakers.
Thank you.

Date: 2008-02-03 12:31 am (UTC)I was happy to see Pascal realize that Nervous wasn't gone. Nervous, it's great he's finally getting himself together. And you know, I love Olive just for that.
BUUUUCK! Gosh. Everytime I read a chapter about Buck, you make me love him more and more. (It's at 1000001% now. Just so you know.) Finally, Jill gets a wake up call! I just hope Jill doesn't break his heart, it will kill me to see Buck sad. They seem so close that she probably wouldn't do that..but still.
It was so sad to see Ripp discover his parents in the cemetery. At first, I didn't realize he saw their graves. I had to read that over a few times, because the entire time I was thinking, "Why is he so upset?" Gosh, I'm kind of stupid at times. >.<
Lovely update, one of my favorites :)

Date: 2008-02-03 01:24 am (UTC)Oh, Buck. *smile* I'm glad you love him so much. He's a really special sort of guy. So nice, but yet... notice that he does get a little feel of Jill's bare leg in there during that final scene on the couch. *grin* I love Buck, but I suppose that's completely obvious. Nobody who knows Buck well would want to hurt him, so let's hope that they don't manage to do it anyhow.
Yeah, it's really sad. Ripp doesn't really "know" since the graves are unmarked, but he did get a feeling about it. Ripp pushes his sadness away, and generally doesn't deal with it (until it all comes crashing down on him).
Thank you. :) Glad to hear it.

Date: 2008-02-04 03:41 am (UTC)Awwww! This chapter was unbelievable sweet! :)
I'm glad Nervous is safe at last. Poor guy, all alone in that house, surrounded by the ghosts, so blinded by his visions that he could no longer know what was real or not. And somehow, he's found a family. There's Ophelia, of course, but also Pascal. Poor little Mint, she was so worried for her Dad!
It's nice to see that things are going well for him now, although I'm worried about those clones and what they'll do to Nervous (and Erin, of course!). What's Circe's plan?
The whole argument between Ripp and Johnny at Ophelia's house was hilarious, and it took away from whole creepyness of the situation. Poor Ophelia, living in a place she couldn't call "home", specially around Olive. I wonder what happened to her body...
Poor Ripp... being so close to his parents graves, but not realizing it.
I really like the relationship between those three (I mean, Johnny, Ripp and Ophelia). They are best friends, despite being so different from each other. And in their own way, they care for their friends. It was amusing how Ripp was so worried about losing Johnny's friendship over the Jill deal, how he tried to cook an omelette, although he forgot Johnny didn't like eggs. He's a bit dense sometimes, but he shows he cares. I also like how Johnny is a bit like the "mother figure" of the house, so worried about Ripp and trying to protect him from his bad habits (as it can be seen on the drug discussion). And worried about the house's hygiene of course!
And Ophelia is in many ways the leader, albeit a silent one. She's so strong and knows how to deal with her crazy room-mates. I like the way you portray her.
Finally, I knew Buck wasn't gay! Sure, the whole "wish to be pet stylist to the stars" Maxis description (which I found out thanks to your story) might hint that he was gay (although it's a bit stereotyped in my opinion), but there were a couple of hints in your previous updates, specially regarding his relationship with Jill. Come on! Those pics at the Christmas update made me believe they were already dating! The way you handled their scene was so sweet I grinned like an idiot after I finished reading it. That was adorable!
Although... I wonder how will this relationship work out? Unlike some of the comments I've read for this entry, I think that the fact that Ripp somehow reacted to Jill's crush might be a bad signal, because deep inside, Jill knows that Ripp is actually interested in her (sure, in a superficial way but...) instead of being just a silly one-sided crush that could fade with time. And that makes me wonder... what is Jill's aspiration? I know Buck's a Family Sim, though.
This was by far my favorite chapter so far!

Date: 2008-02-08 02:50 pm (UTC)Nervous really had a pretty bad hand dealt to him, but he's going to be fine for now. If the happiness you receive in life comes in direct proportion to your sorrows, then he's set (that's not always true, but we can hope).
Hmmm, I never really thought about Olive's body, since they just "become" graves. We'll have to accept it as "sim realism", perhaps.
The three friends all do balance each other out fairly well, don't they? I'm glad you think so. Ripp can be clueless, but he's quick to reach out to his friends (both physically and emotionally). Johnny might be overly serious and critical, but he has everyone's best interests in mind (yes, much like a mother), and Ophelia really is the heart of the operation. She is very much the "leader", and the boys seem to know it.
I agree. You can be interested in "female" things and not be gay. No question. And nobody bats an eyelash at "tomboys", so it's really unfair. Personally, Buck's more interesting to me as someone like that, who defies stereotypes in his own quiet way. There were plenty of hints about him and Jill, so I'm glad you picked up in a few of them. Yes the Christmas party was one hint (autonomously romantic hugging each other too - Awww), although I do tend to use the romantic interactions for close friends too (as was the case when Ripp hugged Johnny during that party - it was a "squeeze").
I agree with that theory. It could be good that Jill got it out of her system, but it could also be that she's just gotten a taste for it too. We'll have to see how she deals with it. Jill is a knowledge sim, by the way. It was briefly mentioned in her diary chapter, but I really should post some updated character profiles, so people can check with them if they are curious.
Thank you. I'm glad you think so.

Date: 2008-09-23 04:11 pm (UTC)Buck is ADORABLE. My favourite character so far. And I'm so, so ecstatic that he's got his heart's desire. Jill's smart enough to realise that Buck is the perfect one for her, that's great! I hope this erases all thoughts of Ripp from her mind, but I think she's still going to have some lingering feeling left? :/
Still if she doesn't act on the attraction she has towards Ripp anymore, everything should be fine. I want Jill & Buck to have lots and lots of kids! :D
Well, that was absolutely the highlight of this update for me, but I shall now turn my attention to something else - was Ripp looking sadly at his mother's grave? That scene was kinda heartbreaking. :(
Oh, and yay - Pascal & Nervous are reunited! And Ophelia has gained another relative - this time, a good one! :D
