Hey, I just posted a rant at [profile] sim_rants. It was my very first one. Isn't that wild? I just thought I'd share. (It's a slow news day.)

If you aren't a member of the comm, the rant was just about how I get irritated when people fail to name fortune sims by their correct name. I know... it's pretty important stuff, right? :P I can't lie, though... it irritates the crap out of me.

It absolutely drives me crazy. I have yet to make a rant! I don't get that easily ticked off, though, so... I haven't yet anything to rant about :P

This is probably stupid, but what do people call them instead of fortune sims?

Money sims.

Elegant, isn't it? :P

Actually, it's usually called the wealth aspiration, but I see "money sims" all of the time too.

Is it possible that those folks are playing the game in a different language? Or perhaps UK English instead of US? I was just thinking that the translations may be different.

I don't think so, I'm in the UK and we (Or at least I do) call them Fortune or Prosperity (?) Sorry never was very good at spelling.

Ah, okay, thanks. (And you spelled it right! ;-D)

Yes, it's very possible that it's a translation issue, I now realize. I still wonder why it only seems to affect the fortune sims, but perhaps that word is a tricky one in other languages.

UK and Canadian English don't really use different words like that (the difference is mostly just in the way things are spelled), so anyone playing in English should have the same terms.

I've also discovered that there are different names for the aspirations in SimPE: fortune = wealth, popularity = friends, pleasure = fun. Again, this doesn't explain why it only seems to be an issue for fortune sims.

I'm really not the ranting type either... at least not in public. I do have a lot of strong opinions, but I usually keep them to myself. I'll share them if you really want to know, but you'll probably have to ask me directly to get them.

This, however, has always bothered me, and so I realized, "Hey, that's a rant!"

I've never posted a rant either. And my comment to you was like, only my second one even though I've been on there for months. I'm such a lurker everywhere besides in your journal.

I comment on rants every now and then too, but it's pretty rare. I suppose I could have saved this an made a simsecret about it, but a rant seemed better. The simsecrets have been bumming me out lately, anyway. There are so many personal things being posted.

Ranting makes me uncomfortable, because someone is bound to get offended, no matter how you word it, or how insignificant it all is. Nobody has really attacked me for being culturally insensitive yet, but they could have. The PC police are always just around the corner... (and I've been on the other end of it too. I hate when people think that saying something incredibly sexist is okay because they're "just sayin'").

I don't mind hearing them called Wealth sims, but yeah... Money sims grates on me just a bit. And it never makes sense to me anyway because all they want to do is buy things. To me, a Fortune sim or a sim (or a person) who is that interested in aquiring wealth needs to SAVE THEIR MONEY A LITTLE.

I LOVE how Free Time enables them to have investments though!

I've also seen Popularity referred to as Reputation. I don't know if I like that or not. *shrugs* It doesn't necessarily say *good* reputation. ;)

I don't belong to sim rants yet... I'll have to go check it out.

I agree. Money sims is the one that I find annoying. Apparently, people just do it to be funny, though, and I missed the joke. :P

I see what you're saying about them blowing all the money, but it does makes sense that they'd want a nice home with expensive things in it too. It's conspicuous consumption, to show off their wealth (yeah, that's right, wealth - not fortune *snicker*).

I agree. I love the investments, and the financial counseling.

Popularity sims don't always want a good reputation, it seems. They like to fight too.

It can be pretty amusing at times. Now that it's a little older, it's not such a strain on your flist either. The posts used to be a bit overwhelming at first.

I like when a fortune sim is really poor, and they want to buy little things like curtains and flowers for their yard. It's cute (and realistic). They need the appearance of respectability as much as the actual cash flow.

That's how I see them too, and it really does work for those sorts of characters, whether it's an appreciation of "the good life" or more blatant "keeping up with the Joneses." I can see a fortune sim spending their last simolean on a vase of flowers, just so they can feel rich in spirit.

wow! that's a new one for me! :P
I've heard (read) sims being called Wealth for Fortune and Reputation for Popularity, like it says in simpe, but never 'money sim'. lol

I guess it's not THAT common, but I do see it here and there.

hmmm I don't think i've seen "money" sims. Oh wait, do you know what drives me crazy? When everyone says Eaxis. I don't know why. And I don't like saying it my head. grrr... lol I understand why everyone says it though. *smiles*

Yeah, I can see that. It would sound annoying if you said it out loud. Like you said, it does make sense, though.

EAxis = portmanteau of EA and Maxis.
