Well, I almost completely forgot about this challenge, and that would have been simply unacceptable, since it was so tailor-made for the leading lady and lads of my Strangetown story. This short piece is a little reflection on their friendship, from all three points of view, and can be considered to take place at this exact point in the story, even though they don't directly address the events of chapter twenty-five.
I also wanted to thank everyone for their feedback on the last chapter. I really appreciate it. I need to respond to the rest of the comments (and all of the back-comments on other chapters - I'm really falling down on my job here). I've been a bit out of it lately, but I'm trying to get my focus back.
Now, on to the challenge entry...

Challenge 006: Short Story
Prompt: Three Closest Friends
Word limit: 600

Expiration: 5/27/08
Warnings: language, sexual situations
Ophelia
Johnny is always the first to wake up. He doesn't believe in wasting the day, and he never sets an alarm clock, because he doesn't need one. He just seems to snap into an on position as soon as the sun rises, and then I slowly wake up to the sounds of him showering.

I can tell them apart just by the sounds they make in the bathroom. Johnny doesn't make a lot of noise. I can hear him opening several bottles and setting them back down, as he uses his cleanser, shampoo, and body scrub, all in a set order. Then it's the sound of him drying off and vigorously fluffing up his hair with the towel. He moves to the mirror, humming himself a tune as he gels his hair. I've watched him do it and he's so exacting. Johnny has a very precise hair routine. It takes a lot of work to to look so random.

Ripp takes his showers in the afternoon. It's easy to tell when he’s in the bathroom, because he stomps around with a heavy step. He drops the soap and then curses it out. He sings. I’ve heard him sing all sorts of things, from pop hits to sea shanties. I've even caught him singing a heartfelt ballad once or twice. When he sings like that, I realize that he has a really beautiful voice.
Ripp
Johnny’s omelettes are the greatest thing I’ve ever eaten, and I’m not exaggerating. They’re the fucking llama’s ass. They make my tongue feel like it’s having ten thousand orgasms all at once. Like the omelette is making sweet, sweet love to my mouth. Like one great big tongue fuck.
He gets all pissy with me when I ask him to make them, but he secretly likes doing it. He just likes to make me think he’s being put out, so I’ll go out of my way to show gratitude. He feels like a big hero when I sit down in front of the plate and lose my fucking mind at how good it is. I know he gets a kick out of it.

I like to watch him cook too. He gets annoyed by me just standing there, being useless, so I pretend to clean the kitchen just to see him in action. Johnny has this really graceful way of moving. It’s all very precise, but with a flourish to it. He’ll sometimes flip the omelette clear out of the pan and land it perfectly, like he’s going for a gold medal in fucking omelette flipping.

Phi doesn’t even need to do anything to look graceful. She just is. I could watch her doing nothing at all and love every minute of it. She's that beautiful.

The best is when she’s in the garden, all bent over and determined, working up a sweat, with her perfect, round ass on display. It’s really all I can do to keep from mounting her right there and just riding her until my muscles give out and night falls. Then we could lie there, naked in the dirt, just holding each other. She could talk about anything she wanted to, and I would listen.
Johnny
I have no words to describe them lately, which is odd for me, since I’ve been told I can be quite verbose.

I could produce a list of facts about them, from the details of their appearance, sound, and smell, to the peculiarities of their mannerisms and habits, but none of that would really explain who they are. Nothing I say could really do them justice. To someone else, they might seem unexceptional, but to me they are everything.
Outside these walls, there’s a whole world of opportunities and wonders, but all I need to be happy is right here.

Date: 2008-05-27 09:50 pm (UTC)Second, I KNEW you were going to do this challenge with these three. No brainer, really. :P
This all just really confirms what's been made clear in the chapters. Thou, neither Johnny or Phi really get into Ripp. They both talk about him, but not how they really feel about him. This isn't even weird for Johnny, but for Phi, come to think of it, she doesn't really talk about her feelings at all. Just really comments on the differences between them in personality. Course, I'm sure someone could read into that too. ;)

Date: 2008-05-27 09:59 pm (UTC)No brainer, indeed. :D
The reason Ophelia doesn't talk at length about her romantic feelings is that this is focusing on the friendship side of things, though I suppose it is much the same thing. I think she's saying a whole lot by the fact that she knows so much about them that she can tell them apart just by sound. That's just a little thing she notices, and that's what Ophelia is like. She's doesn't go on and on about things, but she does focus in on details.
Ripp is the only one who simply has to talk about sex in this discussion of friendship, because that's just how his brain works.

Date: 2008-05-27 10:17 pm (UTC)Ophelia is analyzing and goes into tiny details that speak volumes about how well she really knows her boys. And she's actually taken the time to watch Johnny do his hair! A-and she listens to Ripp singing sometimes and thinks it's pretty! And she listens close enough to know that he sings all different sorts of things and and and - !!!!!!!
Oh and Ripp putting a sexual twist on EVERYTHING. Even things that are VERY MUCH RELATED TO JOHNNY. A-and he watches Johnny cook in the way that Ophelia watches Johnny do his hair and YAY PARALLELS! Also he LISTENS TO PHI like she listens to him!
The fact that Johnny can't even begin to describe them is wonderful. Oh, he knows enough to fill a novel, but that's not the important part!
"To someone else, they might seem unexceptional, but to me they are everything."
BEAUTIFUL.
I LOVE THIS.

Date: 2008-05-28 01:28 pm (UTC)Johnny's part is just him again, keeping his mouth shut. He's always like that, isn't he? Even as a narrator, he's all like, "Well, I suppose I could tell you, but you wouldn't understand..." It's very Johnny.

Date: 2008-05-27 10:31 pm (UTC)Reading Ophelia's synopsis of the two, I kind of want to know more about Jenny Smith. I'd like to see just how (or not) similar the two are (seeing as Johnny and PT are very similar--a fact I enjoy muchly).

Date: 2008-05-28 01:33 pm (UTC)I really want to examine Jenny more closely too, and I think that will come soon. I don't think that Ophelia and her are really that similar, but I'm sure there are some parallels there too.
I can see Jenny being more significant in the story soon.
Yeah, Johnny's getting more and more like his old man. I'm enjoying that too. It's fun to work with Johnny as a character.

Date: 2008-05-27 10:38 pm (UTC)Also, "Outside these walls, there’s a whole world of opportunities and wonders, but all I need to be happy is right here."
This really seems to speak to recent plot developments. It seems like Johnny knows what he wants, no matter how much he struggles with what he thinks he should do.

Date: 2008-05-27 10:44 pm (UTC)That really seems to sum everything up. And I think, left to themselves, these three will be ok with that. Now, will everyone else, I wonder?
Very nice. :-)

Date: 2008-05-27 11:26 pm (UTC)It does sound as though Johnny has come to terms with what he wants. Here's hoping PT won't be too upset, if that is indeed how it works out.
Wonderful job on the challenge!!

Date: 2008-05-28 12:34 am (UTC)I do love how Ripp daydreams about getting all animalistic with Phi, while Johnny's so meticulous. I'm having a hard time imagining how it would go if Ripp gets invited into the bedroom with Phi and Johnny. I mean that first time would have to be pretty... overwhelming? I'm still mulling over the last chapter. It was a doozy and I was doozed! ;)
no subject
Date: 2008-05-28 04:57 pm (UTC)Well, they might not ever do that, you know... but you're right. There's a big difference in the way Johnny and Ripp approach these things (though Johnny might be different beneath the sheets - we don't know). If Ophelia does have a sexual relationship with both of them, she'll likely have a lot of variety in her life, at least. Variety and abundance. Her dance card would always be full (well, it would be, even with just Ripp, I think).
That's nice to hear. :) Mull away.

Date: 2008-05-28 05:00 pm (UTC)Oh, you're right... it doesn't have to be sexual. Or, it can be, to varying degrees. It's not an "all or nothing" situation.

Date: 2008-05-28 05:58 am (UTC)Johnny's in love. I'm not saying definitely romantic love, but he's so in love with them!
no subject
Date: 2008-05-28 05:07 pm (UTC)That's a very nice way of putting it, and I totally agree. They all love each other very much, and going as far as to say they are in love isn't that outrageous. Love comes in many forms.

Date: 2008-05-28 12:35 pm (UTC)Of course Ripp uses sex metaphors! Of course Ophelia notices and observes the small details, finding meaning and significance. And Johnny, not finding the words...That was pretty much the best part. *sigh* I can't wait to see what words he eventually will find to describe their new relationship.
(Edit: Strike 'metaphors' from Ripp, his wording is slightly more straightforward *LOL* So very fitting...)

Date: 2008-05-28 05:37 pm (UTC)I have a feeling that Johnny would have a hard time describing the situation, even if he wanted to.

Date: 2008-05-28 02:59 pm (UTC)Ophelia's talking about Johnny being so precise about everything...and taking forever to do his hair. It takes a lot of work to to look so random. Very true, really. And Ripp's singing in the shower and the fact that he has a nice voice.
Speaking of Ripp...leave it to him to look at everything in a sexual light. I giggled over the tongue orgasm part. :)
This was really nice to read.

Date: 2008-05-28 05:40 pm (UTC)I find it very fun to write more directly from Ripp's point of view, and to show just how dirty his mind really is.
