I didn't forget your birthday, [livejournal.com profile] music_simbol, but my gift couldn't be created with my game all messed up like it was. So please accept this belated gift: a little "family" portrait of some of your favourite sims. No, I'm sorry, it's not smut. :P The sim men in question are above that sort of thing. Try as I might, I couldn't even get them to take off their shirts.

This is how we take portraits in the Worthington family. :) Pretty classy, don't you think?

Apartment Life is going to be very good to the Worthingtons. They'll even have a butler now. I'm planning to spend some time fixing up their place with all the new snooty content. It's going to be awesome. You'll be seeing more of Frances and his family, and isn't that sort of like a gift in itself?

Happy Birthday, Music Simbol! As others have said, I hope you didn't transition into something embarrassing. :P

Happy birthday! It's great you has your bithday, Music Simbol, because even the others get a little present from Strange Tomato! :) Hope you see what I mean.

I looove the picture! I'm drooling for Frances! He's just so cute. He reminds me of Rufus Wainwright all the time, actually. ^_^

Frances is almost too cute to live. ^_^

Since I've caught on to the Frances/Rufus comparison, I can't help but model Frances after Mr. Wainwright. That will get more obvious as time goes on. ;)

And look - ceilings! I'm so excited.

Holy sh*t! Please tell me it's like carpet and not square at a time like the cc ceilings!

Oh, it's much, MUCH better than that. :D It's instant. Like roofs. It's just there, filling in all the space where a ceiling should be. (!!!)

I haven't figured out how to change the type of ceiling yet (or how to move items up and down the walls, but I'm working on it.

Oh, yes! I've noticed the ceilings! I love ceilings in my game, finally no tiles! :) Great to hear Apartment Life is acting fine again.

Aww, thank you strange!!! My two boys!

No smut?! You could have just peeked on them when they weren't looking. I bet then they'd be doing some pretty randy things. ^_~

God, I can't wait til I no longer have to put up those damned ceiling tiles. What a glorious day that shall be. :)

You're very welcome. ^_^ I knew you'd appreciate some eye candy of Tank and Frances.

I could have showed what Frances thinks about sometimes. ;) But perhaps I'm saving that one for later...

You actally used to put them up? o_O Kudos to you for all that effort. I never did. I would lose my mind if I had to go through so much for a photo. I always tried to angle so the roof wasn't showing, but this will make things so much better for photos. I can angle upwards now for dramatic effect! :D

In my Assassin story, I always cover the ceilings. You have no idea how many times I've lined up the shot perfectly, only to have to go back and put more ceiling tiles in. Soooo freaking annoying. Now, you can even shoot up a sim's nose if you want to! :P

No, I think it's more that I'm very likely to include a scene like that in the actual story. ;)

Yeah, that would be annoying. It's annoying to have to be so carfeul with the angles too, missing good shots.

Oh, I'm all about the up-the-nose shots now. :P It's ant's eye view from here on out.

For me, the ceiling tile frustration wasn't so much the time and effort of putting them up... or even the times they transformed en masse into hostas. It was hiding them to play and see inside the house, then showing them to take screenshots, then hiding them again to play, then showing them again...

or even the times they transformed en masse into hostas

That still makes me laugh whenever I think about it. :D Attack of the Hostas!

So those ceiling tiles blocked your view when playing too?! How did anyone ever tolerate them? I could tell I wouldn't be able to deal with the hassle, but that's... wow.

There's a controller, so you can turn them on or off. If I remember right, you can also enable a fade on them.

The problem with the controller is it's tiny. It's shaped like a CD disk and you can only put it on the floor. Tiny is good because you can hardly see it in a screenshot, but bad when you want to find and click on it to make your tiles show up. It's doable but gets to be a bit annoying.

How do they work in AL?

ext_122042: (Default)
From: [identity profile] strange-tomato.livejournal.com
Hmmm... Well, a controller doesn't sound too bad (annoying if it's hard to find, though). The new ceilings can be toggled on and off too.

In AL, they are just there, unless you turn them off. It's automatic. I think you can switch between different styles, but I haven't figured that out yet. :P

Date: 2008-09-02 04:12 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] pixelcurious.livejournal.com
One way I deal with the controller is to always put one by the front door. The consistency helps me find it. But I still have to get there, and zoom in enough to click it, then move the camera back. *is lazy*

Do the ceilings in AL have fade? Like, if you're close enough you can see through? Or wait... are they even visible from above? If they're invisible from above, I'm so effing sold on AL!

From: [identity profile] strange-tomato.livejournal.com
Yeah, I'm so lazy like that too. Any simplification is a good thing, in my books.

I'm pretty sure the ceilings are invisible from the top. I'll have to double check but I feel safe saying yes. :D It's pretty great.

Very nice.

I see that ceiling there in the mirror. Any truth to the "they cut off the top of the walls" thing I've been hearing?

*eyes Frances's feet* Tsk, tsk, Franny. I don't think those are WORTHINGTON approved shoes. Especially for a portrait!

*snicker* The bored expression makes up for it.

Thanks.

I haven't heard anything about cutting off the tops of walls. So, it cuts into the molding? Hmmm... I'll have to check it out. Sounds like a minor annoyance to me, considering the ease of ceilings with this. (The EP is almost worth it for that alone, in my opinion. The ceilings are a blessing.)

Haven't you heard? Frances does things on his own terms now. *snicker* Actually, he always wore sneakers and jeans (faded, even - !!!) with his cashmere sweater and tie. He's a walking enigma, that Frances.

Yeah, he has the bored, rich thing down to a science, doesn't he?

Date: 2008-09-02 01:10 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] madame-ugly.livejournal.com
Yeah, some people were whining that the ceilings cut of the top molding. I thought it was a little nitpicky, too, but then again, if you're going for a certain look to a house (especially if you've already shown it with top molding) I could see how that would be annoying.

So ceilings work like floor tiles (only in the air)? What's it like when a staircase is going through the ceiling? Any weirdness?

*stops the ceiling grilling*

I'm still giving this EP a good sideways glance. I'm just not sold on it yet. BUT, I am starting to give BV the eyeball. I just can't stop thinking about Bigfoot.

ext_122042: (Default)
From: [identity profile] strange-tomato.livejournal.com
They're even easier than floor tiles. You don't have to place them one by one (I know you can drag the floor tiles, but it's still individual placement to me). They're just added automatically. You can toggle them on and off. I really like it.

Where a staircase goes up, there's just a hole in the ceiling, much as it always was. I looks normal enough.

I still haven't figured out how to get different ceilings. I haven't played it all that much yet, really.

*snort* You've been won over to Bigfoot? I thought you refused to go there... and I was really trying to convince you for a while. I thought you were firmly anti-BV.

From: [identity profile] madame-ugly.livejournal.com
Ooh, auto ceiling. That is nice. (I am a floor tile dragger, but I place wallpaper/paint one at a time).

*sigh* Yes, Bigfoot is really appealing to me. I had a feeling he would be my downfall. I'm still not all rabid and racing to the store for it (and I'm leery of some of the glitches I've heard it has) but once I have a new computer (which is being built as we speak) I'll have room for it, so why not? (and new animation box options is always good)

From: [identity profile] strange-tomato.livejournal.com
Yeah, I'm loving the auto ceiling. (And I hear you about the walls. When I drag it, it's easy to put wallpaper on the wall behind the wall I want to add it to. What's up with that?)

Well, why not? I get every EP I can manage to play (which, luckily, is all of them... for now). As a whole, the collection of add ons gives you so many options. Unless my game became really slow, I wouldn't hesitate to add another one if it appealed to me.

The BV animations have some good potential. You'll like them.

From: [identity profile] madame-ugly.livejournal.com
*snort* That's EXACTLY why I do the wall coverings one at a time. You don't know how many times I've accidentally put wallpaper on the outside of the house (over the siding).

Right now, my current computer can't handle any more EPs. BV should add some non-story fun to the game, too. Finally playing OFB for real (in the Round Robin) was great.

(speaking of OFB, I was miffed when I found out the "malls" aren't individual stores available to buy, but one HUGE store, so Pascal's going to have a freestanding flower shop--which I'll have to build)

Thanks. :) You may notice that I edited the jeans Frances is wearing, though (well, maybe not, since you don't have the EP). They had... *sigh* rips all over them. The EAxis clothing designs will always leave me boggled that way. Their obsession with bared midriffs and ripped jeans is just annoying.

I'd love to edit that outfit to use one of the jeans that has rolled cuffs. You did an edit of an mesh like that once, didn't you? Was it hard to do?

The long sleeved sweater with the jeans and boots? I only edited the texture, not the mesh. All I did was select the sweater from one texture and put it over the corset top of the other texture. (Later I learned about bump maps, and I still haven't looked closely at it to make sure those aren't an issue. A lot of graphics cards can't handle bump maps, so they just don't display them. At least that's my understanding)

I did see Frances had a new outfit, and I thought it looked very nice. But I didn't realize you'd edited it. Looks like you did a great job. It looks like Maxis.

So would you be editing the mesh itself, plus the texture, to put rolled cuffs on his outfit? Or just the texture? I think you'd want to do both. I need to learn to work with meshes.
