Warnings: violence, death

Chapter Seven

When Nervous came back to his senses, he found himself down in the pit. It was completely empty. All of the objects that had been in the room were missing, and he had been lying on the floor. He felt cold, hungry, tired, and empty. The room slowly came into focus around him.

Above him, Circe and Loki stood watching.

"Good morning, Nervous." Loki said. "It's about time you got up." How long had he been out? Hours? Days? Weeks? He really couldn't tell.

"You'll notice that all of "your" things have been removed." Circe said through her teeth. "I've decided that you really don't appreciate them, so you don't deserve to have them. I did pay for them, so they're mine to take back, of course."

Nervous limped towards the stairs.

"I wouldn't touch them if I were you." Loki barked. "I've designed those stairs to give a high-voltage electric shock to anyone who touches them when they are turned on, and you'll find that they'll now be turned on indefinitely."

Nervous fell to the floor in despair. He realized that he was to be kept in the pit for as long as the Beakers felt like it.

"You poor thing." Circe purred. "You must be hungry. Don't worry, we'll get you something to eat... once we're sure that you'll really appreciate it."

Nervous wasn't going to cry. He didn't have any tears left to shed, and he wouldn't give the Beakers the benefit of seeing them anyway.

"Oh, and another thing..." Circe stepped out of the room and came back carrying something.

"I found your puppy." Nervous' heart sank.

"Such a vile little creature." Circe curled her lips in disgust. "He's so terribly cute... couldn't you just eat him up? You must really care about this awful little thing, don't you, Nervous? It would be a real shame if something bad happened to him..."

"Why don't we prepare Nervous something to eat?" Loki mused. "He looks like he's really starving."

"Yes, that's a great idea." Circe grinned. "He looks hungry enough to eat just about anything right now..."

She left the room, carrying the puppy with her.

Olive Specter was pleased. Everything had been working out for her, now that the girl was gone.

Ophelia Nigmos. That awful girl, her sister's brat. Taking her in had been a very bad idea, even though it had been necessary. After her parent's death, what choice did Olive have but to take in the girl? Ophelia was even worse than Willow. Such a good little girl. So perfect. So beautiful. Olive couldn't bear to look at her. The way she fed all the stray animals in the neighbourhood. Her good grades, and her little pair of friends. Both boys, of course, the little slut. Ophelia must have thought she was so special, with those two lads hungrily trailing her around. She was just like her mother.

Olive's days were nearing their end. She knew this for a fact, but she didn't mind. Olive Specter didn't fear death. People only fear what they do not know, and Olive was well acquainted with death. She knew death very well indeed. Most of her business in this life was in order, and she was just about ready to die. There was only one thing left for her to do.

She had to find her son and bring him home.

She had named the boy Osiris, after his father. It had been a name he had gone by at one time or another, and it was a good, strong, princely name. He deserved at least that much.

Having the boy had not been her idea. His father had implored Olive to bear his child, and she loved him so much, she couldn't bear to disappoint.

Olive hadn't been prepared to raise a child. She deplored children even more than most other types of people. She was prepared to take it on, despite this, for his father's sake, until it became clear that the boy would have to leave for his own safety.

The ghosts simply wouldn't tolerate his presence in the house. They knew what he was. They grew very agitated, and haunted much more than usual. They hounded him day and night, and his screaming pushed Olive's patience to the limit.

Osiris had been a handful. He would often wander out into the graveyard, where he would be in the most danger. Though it frightened him terribly, he would always innocently wander back into harms way. When Olive would come to his rescue, he'd flash his shy smile at her, but she didn't return it.

Despite his parentage, the boy was just too soft hearted. Olive found this rather disappointing. Had she been someone, anyone, else, she may have found it all a little sad. Instead, she found it irritating. Surely, any son of her's should have more of a backbone. Considering who his father was, it was downright shameful.

So she had given him up for adoption, with the intention of bringing him home once he'd become a man. She figured that he'd be able to deal with the ghosts by then. She would give him his rightful inheritance, which was everything that she had. All the money she had inherited from her husbands, her estate, and the cemetery. She thought that this should more than make up for his years as an adopted child.

Olive had kept track of the years as they passed by, and she knew that Osiris should have transitioned to adulthood by now. Perhaps he had gone to college, but either way, he was surely old enough by now to learn about his rightful heritage.

Ophelia would likely try to return to the Specter estate after college, or maybe she would have the sense to move on. Olive really didn't care. She'd be gone by that time, and Osiris could deal with the girl himself.

Ophelia would be sorely mistaken, however, if she expected to inherit the house, or even anything at all. She meant no more to Olive than her mother had, and she wouldn't be inheriting a single simolean. Ophelia had already been granted a significant reprieve. That was all the kindness that she could expect from her dear old aunt. Olive's only concerns now were for her son.

She called the adoption agency. It was time to track him down.

"Well, Nervous..." Circe smiled. "I thought you were hungry."

Nervous eyed the plate suspiciously. "What did you do with the puppy?"

"Oh, I think you know that, as well as we do, Nervous Subject!" Loki roared. "Now eat up."

Nervous paused. The Beakers obviously wanted him to think that this meat they had served him was what remained of the puppy, but he knew for a fact that this wasn't true. He didn't know why, he didn't know how, but he did know that if the puppy had died, he would know it. He always did.

With this in mind, he picked up the plate and started eating. Of course, the Beakers could also be poisoning him, but he decided that they would probably much rather torture him, and that would require keeping him around. That, and Loki needed him. Loki needed Nervous Subject almost as much as Nervous needed the Beakers.

"Is it good?" Circe asked. "I'll bet that little thing is really tender."

"It is good." Nervous said. Then he suddenly decided to make a move of his own. "But where is the puppy?"

"That is the puppy!" Loki fumed. "You're eating him right now!"

"No, I'm not." Nervous said it abruptly, almost involuntarily.

Loki shook with rage. "How did you know that?"

"I don't know how... I... " He'd made a mistake. "I don't. I don't know. It was just a guess."

"No... That's not what you said. You knew." Loki curled his lip. "You knew it, didn't you?! But how did you know it..." Loki's mind was racing, and pieces of a puzzle that he'd been working on for quite some time were beginning to fall into place.

"Yes. You knew." Loki smiled. "You... know." He laughed a little bit. "Well, well, Nervous Subject. You're not quite as useless as you look, are you?" He paused, considering. "I think it's about time that I did a little testing on you. About you, and only you. You've been hiding something from me, and I'm going to find out what it is."

"I'm not hiding anything, Loki."

"No, maybe not." Loki said. "That makes sense." He smiled. "You don't even know what it is, do you? All those dreams... " Nervous shivered. "But there's something going on with you, and I'm going to find out what it is. But first..." He looked around. "I'm going to do something that I should have done a long time ago." He turned to Circe.

"Circe, would you be so kind as to fetch your surgical scissors for me?"

"Yes, of course, Loki, darling." She left the room. Nervous pleaded with Loki.

"No. Please, Loki... no..."

"Here you are, Loki."

"Thank you, my love."

"Loki... please..."

"Relax, my nervous one. This won't hurt you a bit." He smiled the widest of grins. "I'm just going to relieve you of a silly little affectation that takes up way too much of your time, anyway."

"Oh no, please, Loki..."

"Go ahead and beg all you want, Nervous. It won't change anything." He grabbed Nervous. "I've been meaning to do this for ages." He wrapped his fingers around Nervous' mohawk and pulled on it hard. Nervous dangled from Loki's hand, biting his lip to avoid crying out in pain.

"This hair! This ridiculous hairstyle! It was amusing for a while... and then merely tolerable... but, now..." He shook Nervous by his hair.

"Well, now I'm just sick of looking at it."

Olive's search wasn't going well.

"What do you mean, you have no record of such a person? He is my son!" Olive fumed. "I trusted you!"

The person on the other line was making excuses. "Well, even with a name change, you should know that! How hard can it be to do your job?" She waited impatiently for the excuses. "Disappeared? You mean, he ran away? Then why didn't you find him?"

Olive thought about how satisfying it would be to set the adoption agency on fire, or start a gas leak in the building. She smiled as she imagined every sim inside of the organization falling to the ground, dead. Choking, suffering, and begging her for mercy. None would come. They should all die. They deserved it. It's not like it would even reduce their productivity, since they were clearly braindead already. The person was offering more excuses, but Olive had reached her limit.

She slammed the phone down without another word.

Olive Specter was angry. She was furious. People were so useless. So expendable. She loathed each and every one of them.

There was only one way to get the information that she needed now, and someone would help her to get it, whether they wanted to or not. Olive always got what she wanted, one way or another.

Yes, there was only one remaining way for her to discover where her son was located. She would have to speak to the boy's father. Olive would have to speak with him directly, but that, of course, would involve some measure of messiness.

Someone was going to have to die.

Nervous slept fitfully on the cold stone floor, and his dreams came to haunt him, as they always did. This time, they were more vivid than usual.

That same dream with the shears. Cutting, cutting. The sound of a woman's laughter, taunting, and directing someone.

A struggle. An internal struggle. I won't die. I won't let her do this to me. Not me. Not now. God, I won't go quietly like this. How can I go like this? Me. I'm not going to let her kill me! Please... No. That figure came again. Death surveyed his work and sighed. He smiled, and... he spoke. Wait. He... smiled? Then the dream changed.

The flames consumed him, again and again. The Beaker mansion was burning. It was burning.

It would burn. No doubt about it.

As sure as he existed, they were marked for death.

Toddler Nervous is just too cute. I love him. I couldn't resist a little flashback there. That part was definitely fun. And yeah... he had a black crib. :)

Actually, the black crib is a Maxis recolour by An_na from MTS2, found here:

Simple Maxis Crib Recolors

I love that recolour set (there are also changing tables to match the cribs), and I use them a lot. They are plain, pattern-free, come in a variety of bold (non-pastel) colours, and aren't grouped into male and female categories. Classifying colours by gender is something that I simply do not do, so I appreciate that. And there's a black crib! How perfect is that?

Not the hair! You never mess with someone's hair! That's just plain wrong!

That's sort of a running theme, isn't it? Exerting control over someone by controlling their hair. General Buzz tried to pull the same thing on Ripp, but it backfired on him. I suppose I just really like the use of hair as symbolism. Have you ever noticed how people usually get a major haircut after a breakup, and things like that? Hair is such a big part of someone's identity, isn't it?

Yeah, the Beakers took away the one thing they let Nervous keep all those years. It's a big expression of their power over him, and also... Loki's going to need that hair.

It was awful, wasn't it? The Beakers certainly earned their reputation. It might not have worked to traumatize Nervous as much as they would have liked, but it did get him to reveal that vital piece of information to Loki.

Ooh, the puppy thing made me nervous (no pun intended). I really wasn't sure if you'd do it or not (and I'm glad you didn't). I get the feeling Circe would have no problem cooking up the puppy, but I think Loki would see it as a bit too much. Loki doesn't want to DAMAGE Nervous and puppy for dinner would definitely send him around the bend. But cutting off his hair. . .now THAT is just the right amount of cruel. (and the hair removal as punishment is such a good plot device, I've used it myself in Nocheat--with Ambrose Laide--his mother cut off all his hair because he wouldn't stop dressing like a little girl).

Olive to the rescue? She's definitely an anti-hero. I loved seeing the flashback and getting to know Olive better. The whole thing about giving Nervous away to save him from the ghosts was great (and how Olive only tolerates him because of his lineage).

I can't wait to see how this plays out (and get Nervous with Pascal!!!).

Some of these plots make me really nervous too. Those involving Olive most specifically. She's going to do some terrible things, and I almost hate to have to write them, but that's how the cards fell (don't you love it when the character writes the story for you?). Her actions will have some serious consequences in Strangetown.

You're right. Circe would have no problem with cooking up a puppy and making Nervous eat it. I have no doubt that it was Loki who decided that it would work just as well if they tricked him. And it's true that Nervous' mind is hanging by a thread right now, and Loki needs to keep him together. He needs him on the edge, but not over it.

I love using hair in storytelling. That thing about Ambrose Laide is really sad. Anything involving gender like that can really tear me up. The hair thing is a big part of Ripp's character too, at least right now. It will get longer, and neither Buzz nor Tank will like it much.

Yeah, Olive's not doing that for anyone but her one true love. She's not even really an anti-hero, but her connection to Nervous will work to his advantage in some ways, and to his great disadvantage in other ways. Nervous is not keen on seeing anyone die, not even the Beakers.

I loved the opportunity to show cute little baby Nervous. He's so sweet.

I love when the characters write their own stuff. My Nocheat stuff is pretty much all "character controlled". I just play and keep my eyes peeled for story type stuff. I rarely force an interaction (or use moveobjects or black box). I hear you on the "is this too much" thing. Writing an "evil" character you run the risk of making them "too evil" where you just don't believe it anymore. Mother XYZ really walks the edge for me. How cruel and evil can one sim be?

I've never really cared much about Olive Spectre but you've made her interesting. And seeing toddler Nervous is great. I love having him as a toddler/child in Peculiar. He's just so damn cute! Him hugging the teddybear was adorable. (did he beat the hell out of it later? seems all my toddlers cuddle the toy then wail on it)

(oh, so you don't worry, Ambrose Laide survived his hair cut and his mother came around. He doesn't dress as a girl right now--he's a teen--but that's only because the teen gender bending downloads don't appeal to me--he'll cross dress as an adult, I already have his outfits picked out--and his wife!)

It's not so much that I'm letting Olive do things autonomously, of course, because sims don't autonomously murder each other, but she does have a very suggestive backstory, and there are certain little hints that Maxis put it there that do suggest a possible plan for her next victim. And here, she has a good reason for killing them. They're just a tool in her plan to find her son.

It's hard to push Olive into the "too much" territory, since serial killers are usually about as evil as anyone can be. Olive is there. She does have a rhyme and reason behind many of her actions, but she's still a psychopath. I'm mostly worried about making it too much for my readers, but I think I'm preparing you, so it shouldn't take you by surprise, at least.

Nervous actually didn't beat the teddy bear. He just chewed on it's ear. He's so cute. I love that pic.

I'm glad to hear that Ambrose is okay. Like my poor little Buck Grunt, I couldn't bear to hear that he'd been harmed or that his spirit was crushed.

I totally didn't know that Maxis put in hints as to her next victim! O.O I mean always thought it was interesting that she killed all different kinds of people...oh and I meant to mention that I love that you have her killing people so she can see her lover aka Death. :) Such an awesome angle there. :)

There are definitely things in the game that I would consider hints about her next victim. I will list the details in an extras post, after she has done what she needs to do (wouldn't want to spoil it for anyone).

Well, how else would you see Death? Call him up on the phone? (Well, there's the resurrection phone, but we'll ignore that for now.) There are rules that govern how one would interact with such entities.

This is so unbelivably good, even if it does tear the heart out of me every now and then.
You're right about the importance of hair to people. I know for me part of my love for Nervous is his mohawk. He's just not the same person if you take that away. I tried that once and he just wasn't the same person. So for me he will always have his mohawk (and he's really kind of neat as an elder with a grey one!).
Toddler Nervous is just too freakin' cute!!

The first time I played Strangetown I lost Olive too fast (I didn't realize she'd die in two days) so I never really got a chance to play her. I've kept her alive longer and she really is an interesting character to get into. In my game she had Nervous move back home with her but she also has a zombie teen in the household. That happened because I moved Luc Smith's grave ( I really dislike 'leaky' ghosts) and she then got a want to make him a zombie. So I let her do that. The funniest thing about it is her actions with him can be so schizophrenic. One minute she's talking to him all nice and normal, and then next she's pulling pranks on him and laughing when he gets upset or she starts arguing with him over nothing. then she'll sit down and play chess with him (and I don't make her do these things, either). When your Olive talks about Ophelia and her goody-ness making her sick even though she took the child in, yeah. It's definitely her.
Olive can definitely kick some butt and I think I'm going to love that part.

The bit with Circe and the puppy...shudder...the dog should bite her and run like hell. You haven't happened to have seen "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?" have you? There's some similarities there.

Keep up the good work. I can't wait for the next chapter. they just keep getting better and better.

Thanks. I appreciate a good heart rending myself, so the story definitely goes there every so often. This story definitely has dark moments, but plenty of lighter notes too. The next chapter is significantly lighter. It's the first little glimpse at our favourite teens in college. It's one that I've been waiting to do for ages. :)

I really do feel that about hair. Some of the most powerful moments of my life have been haircuts, especially the times that I have cut a friend's hair for them. It's transformative in a number of ways. I really like Nervous with the mohawk too. It just suits his face perfectly. Hair does grow back, though, just as wounds do heal.

I have said it a number of times already, but I adore toddler Nervous. I couldn't resist including him. So cute.

Olive will definitely be kicking butt and taking names, but I can't guarantee that you'll approve of all of her methods. Not all of her victims deserve to die.

I haven't actually seen that movie, but maybe I should look into it.

Some of the most powerful moments of my life have been haircuts, After reading the comments you've made about that I thought back to some of the times when I've had my hair cut and some of them do tend to be when I've been at a crossroads. So was when I finally took the plunge and colored my hair.

Olive will definitely be kicking butt and taking names, but I can't guarantee that you'll approve of all of her methods. Not all of her victims deserve to die.
I'm sure many of the people in her graveyard didn't deserve to be there (except maybe the exterminator because he is UGLY)either. I get the feeling once she gets going she's hard to stop so I could understand that innocent people might get in her way. I don't mind waiting to see.

I'd like seeing the kids in collage. That should be good. :)

Well, I feel a little better about the course that I've set Olive on, now that you've said that. It really is true that she has some innocent victims in her graveyard. They probably all are. I'm sure that her husbands had no idea what they were getting into. Then there are Ophelia's parents... and Lyla Grunt.

Olive has a pretty good cover going there with the cemetery. It's not just a cemetery, it's a collection, and she keeps adding to it all the time.

I love the kids in college. I may be the only person who ever thought that university is too short for sims. It's the best time of your life, people! Enjoy it.

Poor Nervous. I hope Olive finds him in time. Getting your hair cut unwillingly is quite the violation. Loki has a lot of gall! I had that done to me once, and I'll never forget how humiliating it was.

And wow, Olive has a rather wicked personality. And just what does she do with those plants? (Okay, I admit, I've never used the hydroponic reward object).

On another note, Nervous was such a cute toddler!

Yeah, the hair things was really awful of Loki. It was the only part of Nervous' life that he had any control over, so he's left feeling pretty lost without the hair.

Olive is purely evil. There are other ways to interpret her, I'm sure, but it just doesn't seem that way to me. The exact nature of her motivation will be revealed a little more later, but she kills people. That's just what she does. She has no mercy, and no regrets about it.

I've seen those plants used for everything from the breeding of plant people (Pixel and Bean) to smoking them to having a high old time (Simantics, and tonnes of others, I'm sure). Olive's herbs have a very specific effect on the human/sim body, and she's preparing them for use as we speak.

Nervous was the cutest toddler ever. He's so cute. I love his sad eyes.

OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMG!!! Okay, the Beakers can die now - but SAVE NERVOUS! Sheesh - cruelty galore! That was great. I'm so glad it wasn't really the puppy, but just trying to make him think that it was, was vile - I kind of want them to stick around just to see what horrible things they do next, lol. And Olive - I'm still wondering what she's up to and if she really feels something for her abandoned son, despite her loathing the rest of her family.

Yes, the fact that Nervous dreams that he is being consumed by the flames himself is worrying, isn't it? But careful examination of his other dreams will show that he often puts himself in the place of the victim. Whether that's the case here, or his life is really in danger, well that remains to be seen.

The Beakers have cruelty down to a science (teehee). Do you really want them to stick around? Well, it's good to have a villain or two, isn't it? We'll see what happens...

Olive's feelings for Nervous are much more like ownership than anything, but maybe she really does love him too. He is her son.

Well, Olive will certainly be set on revenge once she finds out what's happening to Nervous over there, and if Olive wants to know what's going on, she will find out. As her Maxis character bio states, "Olive will stop at nothing to get what she wants." Unfortunately, someone else is going to have to help her with her research, and I can't imagine that it will be voluntary.

The Beakers turn their attention away from the puppy, don't worry, but I'm sure that they aren't feeding it like Nervous was, so he may just wander off. Fear not. The puppy will be okay.

Yes, and we'll see exactly what those dreams are predicting in due course.

Thank you.

Nervous as toddler is just the most beautiful thing ever! :D Thanks for including that lit' flashback.
I rebuilt the whole town like like set in the 'past' once and had him as toddler as well. :) .... so sweet!!

I can't wait to see what happens! This story is SO good! I love that his name is Osiris, and the fact that you never mentioned who "his father" was. It was really subtle and awesome. =)

She had named the boy Osiris, after his father. It had been a name he had gone by at one time or another, and it was a good, strong, princely name. Great sentence. Love the rationale behind the name. LOOOVE ickle baby Nervous! Man, his daughter in my game looks just like he did when he was a baby. Them's is some dominant features. I also love the fact that Nervous was just like "Yeah. Your villain cliche doesn't work. I'm not eating the fucking puppy." Although I was totally worried that might be the case because the Beakers are vile... who knows what will happen to that puppy... I think it becomes the cow plant in the Beaker lab. XD

I'm glad the puppy didn't end up as Loki & Circe's latest victim!
Nice to see Nervous talking back to Loki, though now I'm worried about his hair, haha!
*squeals* Toddler Nervous makes me adore Nervous so much more! :D

Oh yeah, and Olive...
Now that's true evil, I think.
Death's lover, possible murderer, dreams of killing, abandons her baby boy - I'm not sorry to say that I'm glad her days are drawing to an end!
Still, she's obviously got something else up her sleeve, huh?
I'm scared already. :/

You're writing is so good! I just can't stop reading.

I was so scared that they were going to hurt the puppy, but I'm glad they didn't. That would just be downright heartless, even for Circe.
