Recently, I tried fiddling with the recessive genetics in Strangetown, using SimPE, since [personal profile] madame_ugly was nice enough to explain it all to me a while back. The return of InSIM made it easy to test them out, so that's just what I did, using my favourite approach - the HANDS ON method.

Yes? Is there something you all wanted to tell me?

That's right, my friends. You got knocked up via InSIM, and you'll have no idea who the other parent is... oh, wait, yes you will. The green ones are Johnny's.

Ophelia: Okay, it's time to clean up these babies, guys! Get to work and start picking them up.

I love how the children of Ripp and Ophelia have such a wide range of skintones, instead of just ending up averaged out (that seems to always happen for me).

Even with all of those babies, I didn't get any kids from Johnny with red hair, so I'm not sure if I correctly changed his genetics. I'll have to test it out again. All of these kids had blond hair, so Ripp's recessive genetics are definitely working (I had some grey eyes too).

It's so nice to have InSIM back. I'm not sure if my sims agree, though.

I did age them up, out of curiosity, but I didn't take any pics. I didn't want to get too attached, since I didn't actually save the game after I did this. There were some cute results.

A HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!

I absolutely LOVE that they all popped at the same time. Tee hee hee!! You'd think Johnny would have red recessive from PT, but what the hell do I know? It would be also pretty darn cool to see what all these kids look like (esp the johnny/ripp kids), but obviously that would spoil it for whatever kid combos actually happen.

BTW, they still in uni for this?

I know. Too funny. I'm glad I caught that pop.

None of the Smiths have recessive genes, but it's only the red hair that they're missing, since all the alien stuff is dominant. It doesn't make sense that they don't have alien eyes, for example, but it makes even less sense for them to have these as recessive genes, because it simply doesn't work that way.

I did age the kids up to take a look. At this point, none of it surprises me, since I've played around with them in CAS too, just to see what the possibilities are like.

They are still in uni, and they're still young adults even. That's a little different, since I used to have to age them up to get them pregnant.

That second picture is just the Best!
I can hear the "Oh Shit!" from Phi and Ripp but Johnny looks more like, "godDAMN!" hahahahahahahaha!

You should make an icon of that. It's the most hilarious picture I think I've seen in ages.

So many babies!

That would make a funny icon. Too bad the background isn't lighter and a single colour. That one's a bit busy.

I love the shot of all the babies just littering the floor too. Ophelia must be re-thinking her family aspiration right about now. Like, "Guys, when I said I wanted to have kids... I was thinking more like just one or two."

My Ophelia just recently had twin girls. That makes four kids altogehter. Now she's rolled that 'want 10 kids' want. Dream on, Ophelia, dream on.

And that is a lot of babies right now. Oh, my!

Aww no fair that we don't get to see them at least aged up to toddler!! I do have a feeling we'll be seeing some form of these babies later on? Yeah, I guess I didn't want to show off any cute babies that would just get erased from the game again. It's a little sad. I will show off a red-haired kid if I manage to produce one.

You can bet that these guys will have a kid or two at some point in the future, in some combination.

What are each of them set to (dom/rec) for hair?

I've noticed red is very "weak". So if, say, Johnny is the only carrier, it might not show up. To hedge your bet, I'd set BOTH parents to recessive red to up your odds (it's still no guarantee, but I've also noticed that in cases of twins, you get "one of each" a lot).

The "ooh, I'm preggo" group pic is hilarious.

Johnny has red and the other two have blond. Dominant is what you see (that's how it works, right?).

I was under the impression that red and blond were equally recessive and brown and black are equally dominant, but maybe I'm wrong. I still think that I messed up the genetics in SimPE. Maybe I forgot to save or something. I'm going to try it again.

I love that Johnny and Ripp both ended up with the alien shirt too.

Date: 2008-05-29 11:21 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] madame-ugly.livejournal.com
Dom is what you see (recessive is the behind the scenese).

So if Johnny was dom blonde and breeding with two sims with recessive blonde, then I think that's how blonde is "winning". (and with Ophelia, who I assume is blonde for BOTH, I'd say your chances of red are even LESS). I'd say switching it so both partners have recessive red would give you much better odds.

I was able to get twin redheads from a red/red and black/red pairing (that's Jupiter and Onus's twins daughters, in case you were wondering--and one was green the other not).

OH, for the skin, did you switch Johnny's so the green wasn't his only choice? You could set him to have a recessive skin (Jenny's tone) and you might get more variety than constant green babies.

Date: 2008-05-29 12:43 pm (UTC)
ext_122042: (Default)
From: [identity profile] strange-tomato.livejournal.com
Yeah, there's the dominant trait and the hidden recessive for each sim, but those traits are either dominant or recessive against each other too. Red and blond should be equal, and if you get one from each parent, they both have an equal chance of "winning", while they would always lose against black or brown. I'm fairly certain that's how it works. So, if Johnny and Ophelia both had recessive red, they should have a 50/50 chance of red hair.

I tested it out again, after I insured that both Johnny and Ophelia had recessive red (strangely enough, Willow Nigmos has character data saying she has red hair. I've always found that an odd genetic combo). Of four children, all had blond hair. I don't know if I'm just unlucky, or red really is MORE recessive (which would make sense, like in real life). Maybe it only has a 25% chance against blond.

I like getting green babies, but I did give Johnny recessive skin too, since he should have it.

AAAAHHHH, too much "science".

What next? MATH?

If you really wanted to figure it out, I'm sure someone somewhere has fully documented how sim genetics works. I bet there's a MATY thread about it (a long and boring MATY thread that will make your eyes roll back in your head and pray for the sweeeeeet release of death--ever notice how a lot of MATY threads have that effect?)

Next up... our guest lecturer, Pascal Curious, teaches us about quantum physics. *snicker*

Yeah, maybe I should look it up (and try to stay awake - though it shouldn't be a problem because it fascinates me), though I'm sure I did read that about which genetics are dominant and which are recessive. For eyes, the brown and dark blue are dominant, and the green, grey, and light blue are recessive. All alien features are dominant. That's true, from what I can see.

Ooh, let me throw THIS monkey wrench into your works.

Gunnar Roque's alien daughter has NORMAL eyes. So maybe alien genetics aren't always that dominant?

Date: 2008-05-29 03:07 pm (UTC)
ext_122042: (Default)
From: [identity profile] strange-tomato.livejournal.com
Nope, that still makes sense. Gunnar has brown eyes, which are also dominant, so you had a 50/50 chance of getting brown eyes. Alien eyes aren't more dominant that the dominant eyes - they're the same.

Alien skin is dominant over all other skins, though, unless you're using custom skin, which is about equal.

*snicker* Can't stump me...

Jumping into the fray and dusting off my (limited) knowledge of real genetics. There is a grid you can use (basically a box split into four smaller boxes)That shows how dominate and recessive genes will pair up (taking one gene for each from each parent).
Taking blonde/red and blonde/red and putting them in the square you come up with the squares looking like this:
1 BB 2 BR
3 BR 4 RR

If blonde comes through more dominate then red then your children have a 75% chance of being blonde. 25% chance of having a true redhead. There is a 50% chance that any offspring will be carrying the gene for red hair and a 25% chance of an offspring being totally blonde.

I hope that all made sense, I just came in from mowing the lawn. :)
Also, this is for real biology, I have no idea what works for sims.
This concludes our biology lesson for today. Memorize this...there will be a test. ;D

I take the three had twins, right?

I've read that red hair is extremely recesive, perhaps that's why you didn't get that now. You still got the very-recesive grey eyes, though :).

Is it really more recessive than blond? I thought they were equal, but madame_ugly said that too. I don't seem to have too much trouble getting the grey eyes.

Was the skin green or not? I know that the genetics in Strangetown used to be different, and they fixed a lot of them, though removing the recessive red wasn't really "fixing" it, was it?

That's really interesting.

Well, if the skin was green, the genetics might have been okay.

Yeap, its very hard to get red hair children with Johnny. I've played with recessive dna for a while now (I always give Johny always red hair/alien eyes/light skin for recessive and to Jill red-hair+allthealiengenesshedoesnothave LOL) and so far only twice he had red-hair children. Once was with a red-haired townie, so I never knew where the child's hair really came from, but the second was with Erin Beaker, so that time I knew it was him *wink*
Anyways, playing with recessive genes its so extremely fun! You never know what will pop up! lol Even Jill gives me green surprises at times, i love it!! :D

I didn't give Johnny or Jill the alien traits that they don't have, since they're supposed to be dominant traits. It didn't really make sense to me, even though it doesn't make sense that Jill has none of the alien traits. I just consider her a genetic anomaly.

I like when the premade sims have recessives (like the Grunts do). It makes more sense. I'm giving everyone I can the correct genetics for their parents, even the parents I invented, so Frances will have recessive blond too.

Date: 2008-05-29 02:50 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] aledstrange.livejournal.com
I personally like to get those unexpected alien surprises, and still even if they are supposed to be dominant, as recessive genes they only show up in counted occasions. It very rare I have green children with Jill and almost never alien eyes with Johnny, at least in my experience anyways :)

funny! I did that on one game as well, but just for 'once' and started breeding the whole town, literally ... OMG! The combination I got that game was amazing, but still I decided that it wasn't what I wanted so much, many of the kids ended up looking so off it wasn't even funny, so I eventually when back to my only-barely-altered hood (i have a couple of main base hood I use to copy when starting a new town, they all have different genetics depending of what I want to do with them lol )

Its sad that so few sims actually have their right genetics as default, if I'm not mistaken i think the Grunts children are the only sims with the correct recessive dna on town.

I can see how it would be fun to get those genetics randomly, but I like to keep things logical for the way the dominant/recessive genes would actually work in the game. I wouldn't give someone brown hair and eyes are recessive either.

It is sad that the genetics aren't set up correctly to begin with. I wonder if they've done that in the more recently developed hoods, like Riverblossom Hills.

Great pictures!!

Ripp generally throws me a blondie with grey eyes about half the time (when I pair him up with a blonde that is) and I didn't do anything to his genetics. I'm of the opinion that he might be one Strangetown resident that could actually be correct, lol. I'm not sure about Tank and Buck's recessive genes... I haven't made them have as many kids as I have Ripp, lol! And Ripp's kids can be wide and varied depending on the mom.

For example, in my new update *start shameless plug here* I wanted the baby to be a girl and have blond hair and grey eyes. Aerin has blond hair and green eyes, and I must have mae her have that baby SIX times before I got the combination I wanted! I had all kinds... brown hair/green eyes, blond hair/dark blue eyes, brown hair/grey eyes, blond hair/green eyes, blond hair/dark blue eyes... OYE!! O_o */end shameless plug* :D

That picture of all of them popping is hysterical!!! And all the babies all over the floor, OMG how funny! Did they all have twins? Who did you get Johnny pregnant by? Or did you have each have one baby by both of the other trio members?

I bet Johnny/Ripp babies are cute!

I love their reactions! Especially Johnny's. Male pregnancy will never cease to amuse me. And that's a lot of babies on the floor! Lol, I bet they could probably handle them... Though they would have no lives outside their house at all.

I just downloaded InSIM two days ago since it updated for Free Time. It's pretty fun to play around with!

And then I realized for the next few updates in my story I'm going to have to InSim Tank pregnant over and over again (and not save) since the baby is already born. The things I do to the poor guy! I've already had him abducted three times for the sake of getting the shots I wanted. He's gonna want to kill me after a while I think. I could just imagine "death of van" showing up in his wants since my selfsim is in the game. Wait, that's already happened. He beat her up like five times for no reason when she was in college. Oh man, those rotten baby bottles are the worst. Nobody ever throws them away in my game. Even in the Curious house!

InSIM is great. I know I could do a lot of the things using boolprop testingcheats, but the errors that would pop up occasionally would always scare me.

I have a feeling at first it had something to do with her being with Ripp. Like, while he was at the house he would always come over and kick the trashcan. But I have NO IDEA how that turned into "I hate Ripp so I must hate his lover too." I like to think it was because he could see the future and he knew what was coming to him before I even did.

To be fair, Blair was over a few times when he attacked Van and then when I played his dorm afterwards he was constantly having wants to use the workout equipment. So then I let full body skill Blair attack him.

Since I had to re-make the Mace family due to them being all glitched, he doesn't know Van at all and I'm hoping it stays that way for a while. He still might be out to get me!
