For those of you who've made wall hanging recolours from an artist or designers work (either in a simlish version or as-is), do you generally ask permission to use their artwork? Or do most people use the images without contacting the original creator of the image? I have a little something I'd like to make based on someone else's work, so I'd like to know what others do in this situation. I feel like asking would be best, but then I'm sort of afraid they'll just say no.

I've never asked, thinking about it, but I've always put links to where the original is as a kind of shout out to the original creator. I would never just post nothing about who made/where you can find the original!

This is what I do as well. Any recolours I've done have only been posted on my LJ, and judging by the stats on my MediaFire it isn't like millions of people are downloading it anyways. I post links to the original artist for credit but since I'm not profiting in any way I don't bother asking.
