I just spent a good portion of the morning writing captions for the next Tomato legacy update (which I've been sitting on half-finished for ages, lacking all ability to write anything even remotely resembling clever captions), only to have most of the update vanish after I hit "save entry." I was working in the post window, but I'd been working in that all along, saving as I went. I was all fine until I finished the whole thing. Then I saved and only the first five images or so and their captions were still there.

I am so disappointed in livejournal right now.

Arg! I feel you pain! :(
The post window is working like sh* lately, especially the rich text editor. It seems like its not dealing with long entries at all. I use semagic for the long entries, so haven't feel it much, but noticed it when trying to make quick posts directly in LJ, or editing old entries. Very, very annoying! (I tend to be very faithful to LJ, but all this lit' things lately are starting to bug me a lot, tbh)

Oh gods that sucks. I've been crossposting everything from Dreamwidth since the new text editor started messing up. I just don't trust LJ anymore.

I suggest to you to use semagic. You can save drafts and all posts in separate files in your computer so you never lose anything.
I only use the online editor to make minor corrections and I noticed that lately the wyswyg editor is not working properly, it mess the formats, it don't understand lj tags and I lost a post recently trying to use that crap (but I had a backup since I first post everything with semagic so it was a minor problem). I only edit my posts now in HTML.

I do use semagic to upload images, but I greatly prefer to type my captions in in the livejournal posting window in RTF because I can see the images there as I write. In semagic I have to click preview to see what I'm writing about. I guess I could number the images in a folder and preview them in windows picture viewer as I go, but that sounds pretty tedious, too. I work better when things are immediate.

You're right, though. The lj editor is shit. I've edited posts before and had the format completely broken, just as you've described. But I don't enjoy using HTMl format when I'm uuposed to be writing to go along with images. I really need to see those images.

Maybe it's time to give Dreamwidth a more serious look.

Dreamwidth's online editor is much worst than LJ's. It doesn't have half of the features that LJ have and is useless to complain or request because their answer is that "they have the same resources", which is not true at all. You can't even add tags in that editor if you don't have a list of your tags saved in a notepad file! That's why I use Dreamwidth only to post my sims creations and use LJ to post my stories (I have a comm here just to my stories).

I guess I could number the images in a folder and preview them in windows picture viewer as I go

I number my pictures in the order that they should be uploaded and appear in the story, upload them to photobucket and then, while I write in semagic, I see the previews in photobucket or in windows preview pics and add my pics copying the links from photobucket.

I stopped to upload my images to LJ in the moment that LJ deleted some of them without any reason (I didn't even had so many images uploaded!) I tried to use another image server but photobucket is so practical that I'm using again.

Have you try using the WYSIWYG mode in semagic? It works pretty well for me when I want to see the pictures and write at the same time (only way I can do anything, but I like having a folder with all the pictures open, to see them all at once too).

It's not too good adding links, usernames, lj-cuts, and can act a bit funny if you try to move images up and down (as in drag them around the page, but works if you cut/paste), tho, so I just switch from one mode to the other constantly, but it's so easy to do, it's not a problem and helps me to make sure the code it's clean too. (One of things that always bothered me when using the rich text was all the coding mess that was left behind, even before all this problem)

Might I suggest the Lazarus Form Recovery browser extension? It's saved my bacon numerous times for stuff like this. It saves what you've typed into any form-y type boxes recently in some temporary storage thing, and I'm pretty sure you can set it to recover stuff from as long ago as two weeks. I'm not sure what browser you use, but it's available for Firefox and Chrome, and totally free.

That bastard did it to me several weeks ago. Ugh. I went back to Semagic. :(
