So I bought the Generations EP. Exciting, right? I brought it home and plopped it in the DVD drive tray, sent it back in, and waited for it to load.

It didn't.

I took it out and tried it again. And again. And then tried accessing it through the control panel.

Nada.

So then I took it to work with me to see if it would load there (when my boss wasn't looking, obviously :P). It did! So it seems my DVD drive is shot. And now I have a game sitting here, unable to play it. *sighs* I was so looking forward to seeing if I could have my sims have a same sex bachelorette party.

Just wanted to share my sad tale. You may resume your regularly scheduled activities now.

Did you try a different disc in your DVD drive? /IT support question

I didn't even think to try that, but yes another disk loads just fine.

So the DVD drives reads other disks, and the Sims 3 Generations disk is being read by other disk drives, but they don't work together.

Ummm... any thoughts?

Not any particularly useful thoughts, unfortunately. My best guess is that either your DVD drive or the DVD disk is just sensitive. Maybe try using some of that special cleaning stuff to give both of them a good clean, and try again?

There's also always the option of downloading an ISO, which is only a little bit illegal seeing as you own the original.

Sounds like a better idea than taking a baseball bat to the entire PC tower. Not that I considered doing anything like that... :P

Hmmm. Option C (or is that D?) sounds like it might be the way to go.

That might create more problems than it fixes... ;)

I know how you feel, I spent three days and cash on new network card before I figured out that it was a fucking Windows update - obviously gone wrong - that had killed my Internet connection. D:

Also, arr!

But so much fun.

I dream of the day I can replace this computer. It's so tempermental. Every month or so it freezes up and I have to open it up, fiddle with some connections inside and then it works again (which is what the tech support used to have me do when I called them). I'm pretty used to it now, but it's a bit of a hassle.

An update on the DVD tray: I left the DVD in there and then it randomly launched the .exe later on last night, but I already had Sims 2 loaded up, so the whole thing failed. Just... why? That was my one chance to install it, maybe!

Wow. Sounds like it is in need of replacement, yes. That's really bizarre with the dvd drive suddenly kicking in ages later. I suspect it knew you were busy, and did it on purpose. Maybe you should leave the computer on overnight, with the dvd in, and see if it's launched in the morning. :P
