Thanks to the advice of akatonbo and simgaroop, I was able to replace the textures on the facial hair. I also did some more playing around with the alpha, and I think I've finally arrived at what I've been aiming for.

It's manly, yet minimally groomed. I think it looks more natural than having the hair abruptly end just above the ear. I'm pretty pleased with how this turned out, and it feels nice to finally get somewhere with it. Now all I have to do is bin these colours, and I can share them.

Fade, yeah! I'm becoming really conscious about having natural-looking alphas for things in my game. My latest stint has been mostly makeup.
