Sim Scenes Weekly Challenge: Parenting - Sympathy - Grouchy

I've been meaning to participate in one of these [livejournal.com profile] sim_scenes challenges for quite some time now, but this is the first time I've been inspired enough to actually give it a go. It's also an opportunity to create a nice, quick story for your viewing entertainment, since I haven't been able to focus enough time or attention to get anywhere with an actual chapter of S,HWC (though I am picking away at it, here and there).

For those who are unfamiliar with the community, one of the rules of this challenge is that each entry must consist of exactly ten images, without any text. It is an exercise in visual storytelling. Like a drabble, this gives an opportunity to hone that specific skill, which is just as essential to sim storytelling as the writing (some might argue more essential). To remain true to the spirit of the challenge, I will offer no explanation at all for this story, and I welcome your feedback. I'm curious to see how well it comes across without any words.

I think you'll recognize the family without any difficulty. )

Challenge 013: Creature of the night!

Hey, I totally did this challenge! :D I even did it ahead of the deadline. Now, you should all go and do the same. It's fun. Creatures, people, creatures! (I layered my creatures... so do I get bonus points for that?)

Challenge 013: Creature of the night! (I still have no idea where Madame "stole" this idea from.)
Prompt: Creature of the night (or day).
Word/Pic count: NONE (W00t! I didn't even count...)
Expiration: 10/28/08

Maxis Taste Weekly Dare 002: Freestyle make-over

If you haven't already checked it out, I recommend the [profile] maxis_taste community to anyone who shares the love of Maxis-made sims (I'm assuming that includes many of the people reading this journal). It's all about the Maxis-made sims and content that matches the Maxis style, which is right up my alley.

I decided to participate in the latest challenge (or "dare" as they are referred to in this community), which asks the participants to do a freestyle makeover of a pre-made sim (up to three), using any cc available to them. I chose Johnny and Jill Smith, since I've been wanting to make them over anyway. I did a little photo shoot, and here they are...

Simstorytellers Challenge 008: Day off

Here's my entry for the latest [community profile] simstorytellers challenge. Again, this takes place in Veronaville, and involves original characters. It's actually a glimpse at a little pseudo legacy taking place there, and these kids are from generation three. There are connections to other hoods hinted at here, but some of it is pretty subtle (hint: the names are clues).

In my vision of the sim world, the Calientes and the Lotharios come from South Veronaville (the Mediterranean side of town, where the Montys reside). That makes sense to me, since Don, Nina, and Dina are new arrivals to Pleasantview, and they fit in with the feel of that region.

Simstorytellers Challenge 007: Dr. Gone

This takes place a little after chapter 26, but the events are all separate, so I'm going to post it now, out of order, just to get it done before the challenge is a distant memory. I really wish I knew of some easy way to include an mp3 file here, so you can hear the song, since it's not a very commonly known one. Oh well. There's a description of the song given in the text, at least. Part of the lyrics are included at the end.

CHALLENGE 007: Song Lyrics
Song: Dr. Gone by Royal Trux
Word/pic limit: 1000 word/10 pic
Expiration: July 1, 2008 (better late than never)
Warnings: language, drug use

Characters: Jaxy Rai and Zoe Zimmerman )

Sim_mania challenge entry + simsecret

I posted an entry for the latest challenge at [profile] sim_mania, if you want to check it out.

Also, check this out... Someone made a simsecret about me. That's pretty cool, but also way less fun than I imagined it would be. That's always the way, isn't it? There's a certain giddy thrill to realizing that someone has written your name on the wall of the highschool washroom, but then you realize that the rest of the sentence says, "...is a slut." (This may or may not relate to an actual event in my life.) Well, what are you going to do? I probably am too obsessed with these characters. I won't deny that. I think I have gotten too caught up in it all, really. It's probably unhealthy. (I'm also feeling that the fact that I've been posted about in a sim secret community might be a sign that I need to return to the real world. I really have fallen down a nerdy rabbit hole, haven't I?)

As for the second part... they must have started reading a different story, since both Jaxy and Ripp still swear like sailors. I don't think I really cut back on that much, if at all. *shrugs* They swear. Some people do. It's not all about them being "bad ass" (though that is a factor, for sure).

I keep intending to submit a simsecret, but I always forget or have trouble coming up with an idea. I considered making a joke secret about the simstorytellers comm, since it's so drama-free, but it never really came together. Maybe next time, I'll think of something.

ETA: I probably won't respond to any of these comments for a while. I have a busy day ahead of me.

Simstorytellers Challenge 006: Short Story: Three Closest Friends

Well, I almost completely forgot about this challenge, and that would have been simply unacceptable, since it was so tailor-made for the leading lady and lads of my Strangetown story. This short piece is a little reflection on their friendship, from all three points of view, and can be considered to take place at this exact point in the story, even though they don't directly address the events of chapter twenty-five.

I also wanted to thank everyone for their feedback on the last chapter. I really appreciate it. I need to respond to the rest of the comments (and all of the back-comments on other chapters - I'm really falling down on my job here). I've been a bit out of it lately, but I'm trying to get my focus back.

Now, on to the challenge entry...

But odd as it may be, without my 1 and 2 where would there be, my 3...  )

Sim Mania Challenge #2: Swimsuit Calendar

I've entered in the second challenge over at [profile] sim_mania. It's a swimsuit calendar this time around, so I decided to try my hand at creating a pretty sim photo. I used SnagIt to take the screencap (thanks for the recommendation, [profile] saunasims!). It's a nice little program, and I solved my wonkiness problem by changing the format of my screen in-game. I took advantage of Bon Voyage, and did the photo shoot on location at Twikkii Island. The rules for this challenge can be found here.

This way to a pretty sim in a bikini. (Okay, I can't resist... bonus points if you have any idea who she is. It has nothing to do with Strangetown... or does it?)

Sim Mania Challenge #1: Birthday Card

I've entered in the first challenge over at [profile] sim_mania, which was to create a birthday card using a sim photo. (See the complete rules here.) This community seems like it will be a lot of fun. There's still time to enter the first challenge before the deadline, so go on over there and sign up if you'd like to join in.

The entries are posted directly in the community, so please follow this link if you'd like to view my entry.

Challenge 004: Drabble+: Blame

Here's my entry for this week's challenge from the [livejournal.com profile] simstorytellers community. It was another drabble+ this time, and the prompt word was blame. This might end up as the opening to the next update, or it might remain separate. I haven't decided yet. I had another opener in mind, but this might work too. Either way, it gives a little more of Johnny's experience with the abduction than I had intended to get into right away. All will be revealed eventually, but it won't be out in the open for a while. What that mostly means is that Johnny may tell someone about it, but as readers, you won't be privy to all of the details.

Challenge 003: Drabble: Pic Prompt

Here's my response to this week's challenge over at [community profile] simstorytellers. The prompt was an image this week. I found this one a little harder to get into, and I think it was because I didn't get to create the image myself. That's usually such an important part of the thought process. I wonder if anyone else who did this challenge experienced that.

Challenge 002: Drabble+: Death

Here's my response to the current challenge over at [livejournal.com profile] simstorytellers . I thought I would post this now, since it's based on the Strangetown, Here We Come, and I won't be able to post the next chapter until Sunday at the earliest. I'm heading out of town tomorrow evening for a long weekend. This drabble+ (slightly longer than a regular drabble, which is exactly 100 words) is related to the next couple of chapters in the story, and is thus a slight spoiler, but I like to think of it as more of an appetizer. I hope the next installment will follow by early next week.

This week's challenge was to create a 150-200 word drabble+, using a maximum of two in-game pics, with "death" as the prompt.

Challenge 001: Drabble: Welcome

This is my entry for the first weekly challenge at the [community profile] simstorytellerscommunity. If you're not already a member of that community, you should go take a look. I'm one of the new moderators, and we've been reviving the community. The weekly challenge is one of our new features, and it's a great opportunity for storytellers to experiment. The challenges are usually pretty small and manageable, so it's easy to participate. If you make stories, or would like to give it a try, we'd love you to join in.

I took this challenge as an opportunity to try out a story idea that I've been considering for a short sim story. I've been thinking about crossovers between the Maxis neighbourhoods for a while, and then[profile] waywardgaze mentioned in a comment about something that she had done in a combined hood, and it was exactly the sort of thing that I was interested in writing a story about. So, after checking to see if it was cool that I take her idea and run with it, I set to work on a 4-5 part story. This drabble is a little teaser for that story, which will take place in Pleasantview, in an alternate reality to Strangetown, Here We Come. You'll understand why when you read it. I'll give more details on that story later, when I have it all set up.

The Sim Storytellers challenge this week was to create a 100 word drabble, using only one in-game pic, with "welcome" as the prompt.
