Drabble: Why Frances doesn't like pirates, ninjas, and vampires

Prompt: Why Frances doesn't like pirates, ninjas, and vampires
Characters: Beau Broke and Frances J. Worthington III
Wordcount: 100
Warnings: none

Beau had rambled on about the movie for what seemed like an hour. He had recapped the scenes, and even quoted the quotes.

It was just so... common. It was an amusement of the drooling, sweating, uncultured masses.

Frances was better than that.

“So, yeah… how about you? What did you think of it?”

“It was… interesting.”

Beau laughed. “You hated it, didn’t you?”

“Yes.”

“But it had pirates. Everyone loves pirates.”

Frances lifted his brows. “Well, maybe that’s the problem.”

Beau leaned back, carelessly crossing his arms. “Don’t take this the wrong way, Frances… but you’re such a snob.”

I just love it when people say 'Don't take it the wrong way' because the person is almost certain to take it the wrong way! Atleast in the cases I've seen.

I couldn't agree more. You're almost guaranteed to be offended by what they say after that set-up, yet people still use it, thinking it somehow softens the blow.

[identity profile] abbycat900.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I tend to just say what I want to say and then say 'Not that I don't like you, you just can be really really annoying,' or something to that affect. xD Usually I only have to say stuff like that to my best friend, and she's put up with me for years and knows how to deal with it.

It's still hard to take, but in some ways it's nicer to say it upfront than just go on thinking it (or worse, saying it) behind the the person's back.

Beau is not the type of person to do that. He's more of a "call you out on your shit" kind of guy, once he gets to know you, which is probably a little jarring to Frances at first.

I'm with Frances 100%. Everyone does NOT love pirates (vampires/ninjas/etc).

Yes, that includes the Johnny Depp too-much-eyeliner ones.

Or "interview" vampires.

Or crouching/hidden ninjas.

Those things are pretty overhyped, I agree. Not to say that I don't like some of those things...

Frances is one of those contrary sorts that dislikes anything that's too popular with the masses. He's too educated in the finer things in life to be able to really enjoy a "Hollywood" movie. Or well... he just doesn't usually give those things a chance.

[identity profile] madame-ugly.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
*snicker* I must be a contrary sort. Or at least a bit.

Now if I like something, and it becomes popular that's fine. But bandwagon jumping? I'm more apt to jump OFF a bandwangon than onto on. (my wife is contrary, too--contrary, what a good word).

But my contrariness is not born of being refined. I'm as trashy as they come. I just don't like crowds.

I hate vampires, except in-game ones (obviously *points to icon*). They are so dumb it's hard not to love them!

[identity profile] madame-ugly.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I don't HATE any of the mentioned, I just don't get the adoration they are shown.

They just seem so. . .limited? limiting?. . .story/movie/whatever wise.

[identity profile] minotaurus.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I can see that. I like some of the ideas behind pirates and ninjas, but their movies and such are usually pretty lame. Ditto with vampires. Especially Twilight. Oi.

[identity profile] madame-ugly.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Is Twilight one of those "buffy" type things? I never got into that and really don't know anything about it besides it has a very dedicated fan base.

CBS had a vampire show on earlier this year and it was SO bad you couldn't even watch it to make fun of it. That's bad. (surprise, surprise, it was cancelled)

[identity profile] pixelcurious.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw an episode of that CBS vampire show at the in-laws' house. It was horrible.

[identity profile] minotaurus.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Twilight is a book series about vampires. Sparkly vampires. I haven't even read it all, but I read some excerpts and it was fairly painful. It was a scathing review, but I can't seem to find it. I'm sure if you're feeling masochistic you could find more on it, though. ;)

Was that Moonlight or something like that?

[identity profile] madame-ugly.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think that was it.

Man, you could smell that one coming.

[identity profile] smjoshsims.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with Frances, actually- I hate pirates. Always have, they annoy me. I love Frances in all his snobbishness though. :D

[identity profile] minotaurus.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, how could someone raised in a rich environment, intended to be heir to a vast fortune, NOT be snobbish? Hell, I've become a bit of a snob from my job. (There I go mentioning it again!) It's like, "Yeah, that mansion is nice, but do they have a $90,000 Persian rug?"

[identity profile] pixelcurious.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Well... Frances IS being a snob! Heh. I mean, it's one thing to not like pirate movies, and another to think you're better than the drooling, sweating, common and uncultured masses that do.

But it seems appropriate for him to be a movie snob. I bet he's a book and music snob, too. I'm willing to bet he's never cracked open a Stephen King, and that he believes in the superiority of classical over rock (though he'd be careful not to mention such views to Edie).

However, I'll also wager that being around Beau will loosen him up a bit. They'll both benefit from each other's company... Beau will gain some sophistication and Frances will loosen that silk tie a notch more. :)

I forgot that Frances disliked pirates. He probably would do poorly at a zombie flick too, huh?

That was funny. :) Glad to see that they're getting together though. Hee hee hee!!!!!

[identity profile] xel-squirgle-ox.livejournal.com 2008-07-22 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I'm amused that you used my little drabble suggestion first! Anyway, this was cute. It's about time Frances loosens up a bit. I'm sure Beau will be able to help him with that. ;)

...And his transformation will make so much more sense than what I did, being the all high and mighty simgoddess, saying "You need to be comfortable with yourself! Now, go change your aspiration to Pleasure and STREAK, goddamnit!"

But anyway, back to the drabble: NOT everybody likes pirates, Beau- I sure don't! I really don't get the hype about them and movies like Pirates of the Carribean.

Something tells me I would get along with Frances very well, because lately I haven't liked anything that the masses have been after: I haven't watched a new movie in the movie theater for years actually, prefer the classics to popular books, and am a huge classical music (well, music from the early 1900s and earlier like the baroque and the romantic period, which some non music nerds would consider classical anyway when they're totally different) buff.

*sigh* It's hard finding like-minded people.

Heh, when I got to the cinema on Sundays, I often look for a film created for the "amusement of the drooling, sweating, uncultured masses." You know, full of special effects or silly pink romance. In México, we call that kind of movies "Popcorn" (Palomera) or "Sunday" (Dominguera) Movies and are perfect to relax and just have a couple hours of mindless fun.

Then again, I've never understood the big deal with vampires and pirates. The Pirates of the Caribean trilogy bored me and you don't want to hear me rant about the Twilight books. So I guess deep inside I'm a snob just like dear Frances.

I really liked the drabble. You can see more proof of how those two complement each other ^^. Even as friends I'm sure they'll learn a lot about their respective worlds.

(BTW, Did Frances and Beau went to see ARRRR!? ;) )

[identity profile] simsbarbie.livejournal.com 2008-07-22 07:58 am (UTC)(link)
I can see Frances not enjoying that kind of stuff. What kind of movie would he go see?
I like vampires, ninjas, and pirates only if its in a trashy/hot novel.

The story didn't really say why he doesn't like them though.

Sure it did:

"It was just so... common. It was an amusement of the drooling, sweating, uncultured masses.

Frances was better than that."

[identity profile] hannahspring.livejournal.com 2008-07-23 08:49 am (UTC)(link)
Great joke for morning, thanks for making me laugh! xD

But Francis and Beau make such a good pair, it's so good to see them together. They are meant to be together. Yeah, unless you won't make any twist in the story. ;)

[identity profile] 80sfiend.livejournal.com 2008-08-17 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
That's so Frances :D :D

It can be quite weird at times.

[identity profile] half-pace.livejournal.com 2009-07-10 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
For example, you cannot rescue someone from walking the plank. IT DOES NOT MEAN WALKING A PIECE OF WOOD INTO THE OCEAN!!!

It means chopping people up into pieces and throwing said bits overboard.
