Sims 3: Bitching and moaning

Wow. Just... wow.

From the The Sims 3: World Adventures Q&A on IGN:

The Sims 3: World Adventures offers a whole new way to play that we've never done in a Sims game before. We're utilizing the opportunity system introduced in The Sims 3 to take your sims through a whole variety of different adventures. You can start by talking to a local merchant who will send you off to find a keystone that unlocks the treasure chest to get into the secret chamber and so on. You aren't just picking up random tasks--you can follow and participate in a story. Each location offers different back stories and secrets to uncover. We're also working on a much more interactive exploration system in our tombs and catacombs. The player will need to solve puzzles to get from room to room--you can't just click in the treasure room and say "Go Here" anymore. Using your sims' skills, special items and figuring out a puzzle will be how to get through the multitude of areas we've set up for you to explore.

Sorry, but if I wanted to solve puzzles to get from room to room, I'd play a Legend of Zelda game. They're MUCH better at it. I hate to whine about this yet again, but seriously... what the fuck?

You've reminded me of what my SO said, which was, "So they've turned it into a boy's game instead of a girl's game?" As much as I resist gender-restrictive categories, there is a lot of truth to this statement. It's like they don't believe that a domestic-themed "girl's game" can be popular without adding some adventure in there.

My SO also asked if they'd have to find somewhere to pee in the middle of solving the puzzle. :P It's a good question.

This!

I was hoping the expansions would add neighborhoods. I was hoping, of course, for Strangetown. Oh well!

Exactly. I like those games too, but sim games should focus on being what they're supposed to be. If they wanted to make a spin off adventure game, then fine, but they shouldn't mess with the genre of titles in their very popular (*ahem* cash cow) simulation series.

And I was already delivered a blow this week when I saw what they're doing with Archie these days...

What is the world coming to? *snicker*

Yeah, exactly. I have no problem with them making all sorts of complex things for sims to do, but I want to putter around and do them on my own terms. And I certainly don't want to have to solve puzzles.

I agree on the scenery. I love that, and the custom colour wheel, the story progression (sometimes), and the open neighbourhood. If they could stick with what's good and work on adding more detail to the things we love, like genetics, then we'd have a game worthy of the series. They did some things right, but it's not enough.

Sims 3 should have taken everything good about Sims 2 and made it significantly better. If not, then why bother? We'll always have Sims 2, because the game doesn't "end." They needed to really raise the bar with a sequel, but instead they chose to switch genres. It's a shame.

I thought we were getting an improved, more developed The Sims 2.

That's exactly what we should have gotten. Even something much the same as Sims 2, but with better graphics, would have been okay, but to make it worth the bother to start all over with a new game in the series, we would have loved to see big improvements to the simulation side of things. They're wasting valuable energy in adding all this other nonsense.

I haven't uninstalled Sims 3, because I do still enjoy playing it from time to time, but EA needs to hear that I got tired of collecting seeds and completing opportunities a LONG TIME AGO. A chance card is one thing, but don't distract me from managing my household. THAT is the game.

Do you have to solve puzzles in MMORPGs? I have to admit to being pretty ignorant of them. I thought it was mostly fighting and stuff.

I sort of thought I would like that game, but I never did play it. Did you?

I would buy that. ^_^ If you're going to go there at all, it may as well have llamas.

[identity profile] elizabeth-becks.livejournal.com 2009-08-14 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, I barely like the Sims 3 on its own, now this crap. I have a rubiks cube that I need to solve and that's more important than this new expansion pack.

The Sims 3 on my laptop runs slower than all of the Sims 2 games that I have and I have every one of them. Imagine what this crap expansion would so to my poor laptop.

I seriuosly thought I found crap games that belong to my brother, now I have found one that takes its place at number one of shite games.

I think I've finished my rant.

[identity profile] simsinthecity.livejournal.com 2009-08-14 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I mean, the "original recipe" is how the original game got to be the best-selling PC game in the world. The sequel is "never better" than the original in terms of sales because people know more of what they're getting into, so less people will buy the second game after buying the first one and just not getting into it.

LOL, kind of reminds me of building community lots for TS1 and forgetting the bathrooms.

[identity profile] simsinthecity.livejournal.com 2009-08-14 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Nope. Considering I was only 10 years old when it came out (I started playing when I was 9, but that's a story I'm saving for if and when I get a Storyteller's Spotlight at [livejournal.com profile] simstorytellers) I doubt my parents would've let me if they knew the kind of people who play it.

Considering that there wasn't much to do (I've heard it described as nothing but a "giant chat room") and custom content wasn't enabled until well after its heyday, it's a good idea that EA ended up ruining. Wouldn't be the last time, that's for sure, eh?

[identity profile] themadmaiden.livejournal.com 2009-08-14 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
I'm starting to consider uninstalling my sims 3. It's just not as fun.

And that expansion pack...wow. That's about all I can say.

[identity profile] simsinthecity.livejournal.com 2009-08-14 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
But who knows what time travel would do to such a great neighborhood (à la Don Lothario)?!

[identity profile] simsinthecity.livejournal.com 2009-08-14 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Are there llamas in TS3? I haven't heard much about them anymore. It seemed like "more llamas, more fun" was a good way to describe the games before.

[identity profile] will-o-whisper.livejournal.com 2009-08-14 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
Admittedly, my experience with MMORPGs is pretty limited to World of Warcraft, but I've never heard of one being heavy on the puzzles. There might be puzzles implemented into some of the quests - off the top of my head, there's one dungeon I know you need to activate a series of statues in the right order to able to fight the final boss - but they're never the point, in my experience. They're more about doing quests, killing baddies, amassing a horde of awesome lewt, juggling your stats, things like that.

I think the MMORPG comparison is more to do with Opportunities, which are basically lame quests. They even give out gold cash rewards.

There's a llama on the logo of the major sports team. I'm not sure if there's anything else.

[identity profile] will-o-whisper.livejournal.com 2009-08-14 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
...you know, I don't actually know. Given the way things are, there might not be. I mean, they even did away with the smustle as far as I can tell. ;^;

Everything is better with more llamas.

(Anonymous) 2009-08-14 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Smustle's still there.

(Anonymous) 2009-08-14 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, am I the weirdest person ever? Because this sounds like wicked fun to me. I always wanted the Sims to combine the whole "customize everything" shtick with exploration and adventure someone BESIDES the same boring old neighborhood (I was one of those kids who took their dolls out of the dollhouse and played with them around the house.)

[identity profile] sidonzo.livejournal.com 2009-08-14 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
It's fine if you don't like TS3, but don't insinuate that people that do like it don't know what a sims game should be like. I played Sims2 obsessively for three years. I loved it and knew absolutely everything there was to know about that game. And I still think that Sims3 beats the Sims2 in every way except for making things like restaurants rabbit holes. Everything else is a step up.

If you don't like the game and like the Sims2 better, then that's great. I'm just tired of people saying that the only people that like the Sims3 are either stupid, EA sheeple, or have no idea about what sim games really are.

[identity profile] garnet812.livejournal.com 2009-08-14 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
My husband bought me the Sims 3 and I think I might have played it maybe a week. I kinda feel bad because he bought it because he noticed I didn't have it. I really did tried to like it. The scenery is awesome, I love the customization for everything, and the traits are cool, BUT I just could not get into the game. I do not like the way the sims look, and I miss my VAMPIRES alot. I love Sims 2 because I get to create the world I want my sims to live it. I have a certain styles to each of my neighborhood and the Sims 3 just seems too vanilla for me. I know it's just the base, and creators are making leaps and bounds everyday in making custom content, but it just does not live up to my expectations. I guess that I wanted Sims 2 with better graphics, control, and traits. And then I see the expansion pack and I just know I will never play Sims 3 again. Sims do not need scavenger hunts and puzzles and BS like that. I thought the whole concept of the sims was so that we could control what happened and what our sims do. Puzzles have NO PLACE in this game. I'm really sorry for the rant and taking up so much of your space.

This is the death of Sims as we know it.

RIP The Sims. You had a good run while it lasted. :/

A good game is motivated by the fun the developers have developing the game. Not the fun they have motivated by the notion that they can earn money from a name and not a product.
