CC project: subtle sideburns

After thinking about Ripp's sideburns some more, and some fruitless searching, I decided to try my hand at alpha editing.

Everything is clearly labeled, to avoid confusion.

1. No sideburns

2. My alpha-edited subtle sideburns - I can only figure out how to make them in black. Does anyone know how to toggle the colour in BodyShop?

3. My sideburns, again. Shown in black, to illustrate how they would look if they matched up.

4. Maxis sideburns

5. Tyler's sideburns (from GoS)

6. Fanseelamb's pointy sideburns (included with the Rufus Wainwright sim)

So what do you think? They achieve the effect I want them too (less stylized, and more natural than the other options), but I don't know how to make them brown. I'm sure there's an easy answer that I'm somehow missing. Anyone?

Also, what could be sexier than Ripp?

Answer: Six Ripps.

I like number two. Maybe three.

With the color toggle thing, I usually start out with blond and go on from there since it's ~easier~ to recolor it.

Maybe you can try giving it a screen layer to make it lighter? That might make it weird and contrasty though. :\

That was a knee-slapper~ :P

I like your style...not everyone has such heavy sideburns

I don't do much in body shop, so I've got no answer to your question, but I think yours are the best of the bunch that you've shown.

4 and 6 are to long, and 5 looks like he took a bunch of hair spray and combed it backwards.

I don't know how to toggle the color, but I do like your edits quite a bit. They look like the kind of sideburns that a really laid back guy would have. It's not so clean that it looks professionally done, but the guy still wanted to make an effort.

Yours are nicely realistic looking, and don't look like they need a lot of work. Which suits Ripp nicely. Having sideburns because they start where you stop shaving to is more like him than carefully manicuring his facial hair each day.

Nice job with those sideburns. They look A LOT more natural than the Maxis ones. Those Maxis sideburns have always kind of bothered me...

Yeah, all I can think of for changing the color would be to extract a brown hair using BodyShop, then use some photo-editing program to open the file for the sideburns and one of the files for the hair side-by-side, so that you can easily compare the color as you recolor the sideburns. There's got to be a better way, though.

I agree with Doey, export the blond one and then use layers to color it (lucky Photoshoppers!)

And they look GREAT! I would definitely download them. :D I love how subtle they are, delicious.

I love those sideburns. They look much more natural than the Maxis ones. I'd definitely download them.

Six Ripps = WINWINWINWINWINWIN

[identity profile] simgarooop.livejournal.com 2009-02-21 01:47 am (UTC)(link)

They look great! Much better than the base ones, which I don't use as much as I'd like because they are too long.

I'm afraid I don't understand what you mean by toggle. You mean you want them to change color when you change the sim's hair color like all the Maxis facial hair?

If that's the case, you need to make four different projects for your sideburns (one using a red haired sim, another with a blond, etc. etc.) and work from there so you can compare the sim's hair with the sideburn.

Once you are done, you can bin them so they work like the base game hair. I use the WW because I have no idea how to do it with SimPe.

And I hope this made sense! O_o

[identity profile] smjoshsims.livejournal.com 2009-02-21 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
It's super easy to do it with SimPE, I bin AND family them there. There's a tutorial here. (It's by the Evil Wench of Demonic Evil Freshness, but eh, it works.)

Great! Thanks for the link! :)

(LOL! I had no idea who were you talking about until I clicked the link. Though I have to admit that she makes pretty good tutorials (I used her meshing one to resize the goggles), no matter how deeply annoyed I was by her behavior the other day)

When I go into the "create project" menu to select the sideburns, all the facial hair is shown as black hair and there's no way to select a different colour.

Toggle is probably the wrong word, but you know how you can select which colour hair you want to work with when creating a sim hair in BodyShop? Well, I couldn't do that with the facial hair. It was only giving me black as an option, and there was no way to switch to the different bin colours.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong, and I'm missing a step. I should have access to the four default colours, shouldn't I?

[identity profile] strange-tomato.livejournal.com 2009-02-21 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, but all I have access to is the black. If I could get a blond version, I could probably get the brown too, right? I have no idea how to switch to the other colours when creating the project with the facial hair.

Am I just missing something? It seems really weird that black would be the only option.

[identity profile] simgarooop.livejournal.com 2009-02-21 03:29 am (UTC)(link)

In theory you should have access to the four colors, that's right. I've never made facial hair, so I'm not sure how does the BS screen look, but if what you're saying is actually a mistake from Maxis, it's a very lame one!

[identity profile] smjoshsims.livejournal.com 2009-02-21 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
REALLY? I've never created Facial hair in Bodyshop, so I didn't know. :(

That's insane! I'm finishing my skins, so I'll definitely take a peek to see if it's the same in my Bodyshop. :)

Oh, I would really appreciate it if you took a look at it. I was a bit spaced out when I was doing this, so I really could have missed it. It only seems logical to have the option. Thanks, Josh! :)

Did you see your eyes on spring4sims.com?

http://www.spring4sims.com/2009/02/maxis-match-default-replacement-eyes-by-smjoshsims/

I'm glad she's getting the word out about them. The more I see Maxis-match Phobia eyes around the comm, the happier I am.

[identity profile] smjoshsims.livejournal.com 2009-02-21 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
I'm loading it now. :D

YES I SAW THAT! I was ridiculously happy! I LOVE the collage she did, with Beau and Ripp! :D :D :D :D :D

Me too. I love that they're so popular, it makes me feel so happy that I made them. (I keep wishing for the day I see one of my hairs around, but I never do.)

Yeah, the swatches with different colours weren't there, like they are for the hair. I'm going to take another look at it in the morning, and make search around to see if this is a known issue. How are people supposed to make custom facial hair, if you can't access all the colours? There must be a way.

(I was thinking about toggle again, and it's definitely wrong. It implies that there are only two options - on or off. Thanks for reminding the people with English as a first language how to use it. :P *is embarrassed*)

I think I have used your hairs, but not on any of the characters you've seen in the story. It's more to do with Peggy's meshes than your recolours (which are lovely), so I hope you don't feel bad. I'm just not a huge fan of her hair. It's a bit busy for me.

[identity profile] smjoshsims.livejournal.com 2009-02-21 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
*nodnod* That's what I guessed it was, most Maxis Matchers don't use her meshes, but some of them are gorgeous, imo. I totally get it though.

OMG THIS ICON MAKES ME SAD. I want a Franny icon SO BAD! *flails*

Yeah, I know you're a fan, so I try not to gripe about 'em too much (when you're around, that is... when you leave the room I just unload :P). I do like some Peggy meshes, but I'm more of a Raon girl for the long girly stuff.

[identity profile] smjoshsims.livejournal.com 2009-02-21 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
LOL, NICE. I always knew you were secretly talking behind my back. ;)

No, but I do like a few of her meshes- most of them are crap.

I LOVE Raon's hairs, especially some of her older ones- I've been thinking of retexturing a few of my favorites. What do you think?

Franny makes the best puppy dog expressions. He shatters hearts.

I wanted a Frances icon really badly too, so I made this one. ^_^
