Question for CC Makers

For those of you who've made wall hanging recolours from an artist or designers work (either in a simlish version or as-is), do you generally ask permission to use their artwork? Or do most people use the images without contacting the original creator of the image? I have a little something I'd like to make based on someone else's work, so I'd like to know what others do in this situation. I feel like asking would be best, but then I'm sort of afraid they'll just say no.

If possible - if their contact details are readily available - I will ask. In most (if not all) cases I've had a positive response, although often I have to explain in detail what I want to do with their art-work, as not everyone is familiar with the concept of making custom content for a computer game.

I haven't asked in case it was just one or two personal recolours for my game that I was never going to share anyway, but if I make a set, I usually ask. Most people are fine with it, and are sometimes really flattered.

I've never asked, thinking about it, but I've always put links to where the original is as a kind of shout out to the original creator. I would never just post nothing about who made/where you can find the original!

If it's for me and not to be shared, I'd go ahead and make it. However, if it was a piece of CC that I was planning to release I'd definitely contact the original artist if possible.

Agree with the others that asking is best, but if it's really just a piece you're going to use for yourself and not share? Eh.... it's probably okay to not say anything. If you're ever going to show it off publicly then the least you can do is give credit and link back to the original artist.

If it's a piece of CC you plan on sharing with the comm than I would almost definitely ask.

I just use it and then give credit and a link if possible. If the artist were to see it and ask me to remove the download, then I would; but I would not contact the artist myself to ask first.

Best to ask, since the artist may get nasty if you don't. And once you make your creations, send off the in game photos to the artist to show what you did!
