More Downloads Folder Organizing

I've been doing a massive amount of clean up to my downloads folder, especially where hair is concerned. This is really helping with loading times, but creates other problems. Somewhere along the line, I seem to have removed the hair I was using on Kimberly Cordial by accident and now I can't remember where it came from. It's so frustrating! I know it's a free Peggy hair, and located the mesh name from her website, but is it just me or do her hairs have no titles? Neither her site nor the hair wiki seem to refer to it by any name I could search. No, that would be too easy. *sighs*

I was sure it was one of simgaroop's older retextures (and that would make sense, because I've removed a LOT of her hairs, due to the fact that I had about a million of them in my game), but I can't locate it on Simlish Creations, her journal posts, her photobucket album, or her mediafire folders. I've gone just about mad. :P

I mostly just wanted to bitch, but this is the hair I'm referring to, just in case you might recognize it. Cleaning up your downloads folder is hard work!

I've also been making use of a lot of the new clothing mesh defaults that are being created lately. I especially love the sets that [livejournal.com profile] dhearest and [livejournal.com profile] le_plat_du_jour have been releasing, but there are many other great finds out there. If you haven't already, check out [livejournal.com profile] le_plat_du_jour's amazing resource, [livejournal.com profile] sims2_defaults. This helps with conflicting defaults, which is so very helpful.

Has anyone else been trying out these defaults? I'm not going to replace everything, since some of the questionable stuff can be funny, and I need some for character reasons. For example, nobody has replaced the basegame afbodydress with anything equally mom-ish, and there are very few options for this age group as it is, so it stays). I'd love to see some nice Maxis-match work-appropriate defaults for the basegame suits, since they're so often used as work clothing for the various careers.

Some of the basegame textures and meshes are just bad, though. There's no two ways around it. I hate, hate, hate everything about afbottomflairedpantssandals, for one example, and I'm sure I'm not alone on that. What are your most hated basegame meshes?

Urgh, No, I loath it! Colours are Ick and it has been replaced with much nicer versions doing the same job! Plus, I have *never* seen anyone wear that sort of stuff in Garden or out! (LOL)

You got the outfit's nail on the head, if that makes sense. I think the Mesh would need to be Tweaked to get it looking right, though, unless you had a *REALLY* Good retexture! The little Nobbley bits on the lower legs don't really look right, and the Leg just goes strait into those boots. In fact, it's probably because the outfit looks so disimilar to Bike Leathers that it's always used as a Polinator outfit! Those Blue and Red recolours are really bad :/

I know. What a great idea! I'm thinking of passing on some of the ones I have that aren't listed there yet.

I'm like that, too, unless the orginal is so horrible that I won't miss having that option (like the crappy jeans). I usually like to replace like with like, though.

Quite a number of the replacement tops have been untuckable, which is a good idea. I like things that are wide enough to fit over most bottom meshes.

It's too late! No take backs. :P

It's racy and comfy and totally all over the place! *snicker* EAxis did do those fairly racy outfits for the Valentines download on their official site, though, so they try to be sexy sometimes. God knows they love to show lots of midriff, anyway. they're not THAT prudish.

I actually really like the full-bodied shape of that underwear, and the french cut isn't so bad. It's more suitable for a sexy, mature lady.

Then you haven't seen me in the garden, have you? :P Not that I wear something like THAT exactly, but I have some very funny thrown-together ensembles, prompting my SO to call me things like Mrs. Plaid and The Cute Lady Aviator. (Yes, I know we're weird.)

That red colour is so nasty! Even a couple of colour replacements for that mesh would be lovely.

When I got home from work today I had a ton of new emails in my inbox and was a little like, what the hell happened? But then I saw this post; I guess you reach a lot of people! Anyway, thanks! I'm glad you find the database useful, and that you like my defaults! It's hard to make defaults that a lot of people like... Not that was ever the idea, I just made them for myself and thought It'd be nice to share.

The most horrible maxis original I think is the flairedpants thing. Yuck. But then, those were the first pants I replaced. Oh, and I also hate that all those tops are so short! I guess everybody feels that way, though. Oh, and all those 'posh' dresses with sandals! There are a lot of horror pieces.

[identity profile] le-plat-du-jour.livejournal.com 2010-06-17 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
The Store files are a bit weird indeed. What I did, is just open one of the store files and extract the gmdc/gmnd/cres/shpe files. Then open a new file and add those and save as your 'meshfile'. Then you can just extract the texture files from the store file and proceed as usual. :D Does that make sense? I'd be happy to help :)

[identity profile] skellington7d.livejournal.com 2010-06-17 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty much all the basegame female formals, the cowboy tops, and those flared pants. I've also gotten really sick of that red seasons jacket because it always pops up when I'm missing a file. I also dislike all the FA tracksuits, though I really like the more flattering ones for teens. And I hate the kids' pajamas and how they're all alike!

[identity profile] smjoshsims.livejournal.com 2010-06-17 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
I was apparently late, since someone linked you before me, but I did recognize it!

Holy Simoly stuff is gorgeous, and I should really follow your lead. I have a lot of their stuff and I don't even use it. :\

I was never bad about buy and build mode stuff, but I have so much hair and so many clothes! And most of the clothes are all recolors of the same few outfits over and over again. it's terrible.

I DID. I cried a little, it was a sad moment for sure. :P

I have like 10 billion cardigan and cardigan recolors. I need to delete them as well. xD

I have a texture replacement of the Seasons jacket and it's so refreshing to see a different colour when I'm missing a mesh! It's still annoying, but at least I have something different to look at.

Has anyone ever considered converting the teen tracksuits for adults, I wonder? A lot of issues can be resolved with conversion meshes. There are a lot of nice ones for elders, for example. Those poor elders don't get many options, especially if you want to keep the elder shape.

I have a replacement for the kids pajamas that gives them bunny slippers. It's really cute.

Heheh. Sorry to flood you with hits, but I guess that's a good thing. ^_^ I'm happy to spread the word. You've created a great resource there. Thank you for all your hard work!

It makes sense to create them for yourself first. That's what I would do. That way, at least one person gets exactly what they want! ^_^ Defaults are such a personal thing, so it's best to please yourself. We're just lucky you decided to share them!

I was messing around with graphics settings the other day and I realized that a lot of the ugliness of the basegame textures may have been intended for people with less powerful computers. On the lowest setting, those low detail textures still resemble something, so it makes sense. That's my theory, anyway.

[identity profile] strange-tomato.livejournal.com 2010-06-17 11:40 am (UTC)(link)
That makes sense. (Go me! I actually understood that! :P) I've made a couple of failed attempts at defaulting a mesh so far (I picked bad cc to attempt to default, it seems), but I'm going to give it another shot eventually. Your tutorial is very clear and easy to follow, so thank you for that, too! ^_^

[identity profile] autumnparanoia.livejournal.com 2010-06-17 12:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't mind the underwear once the heels have been removed and the waistline lowered a bit, it just amuses me that it's "supposed" to be sexy. And that's a good point, EAxis do have rather a lot of revealing but tasteless clothes. I'm far from prudish, but most of my defaults make those outfits more realistically modest.

[identity profile] autumnparanoia.livejournal.com 2010-06-17 12:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you seen Ja's stuff? http://javiera.dreamwidth.org/

She's replaced all the AM shirts, for a start, and her creations are lovely.

[identity profile] skellington7d.livejournal.com 2010-06-17 01:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Looks like CatOfEvilGenius did! I don't know why it's not a picked download or anything, I usually filter the normal ones out. There's also separates, which is awesome because I'm a sucker for sims being able to wear different stages of them outfit. I wish separates worked for all the clothing types instead of just everyday.

Wow! I've seen her stuff on GoS, but not her dreamwidth. I'll be checking that out, for sure. Thank you so much!

After I said that about the polo shirts, I remembered that Amaryll did a nice polo mesh and then Nilou retextured it, too. I think that'd make an excellent replacement set. Since there are so many male polos in the basegame (16, was it?), one could even throw in the retro textures (which I adore).

[identity profile] autumnparanoia.livejournal.com 2010-06-17 01:16 pm (UTC)(link)
One of Ja's replacement's does use Amaryll's polo shirt mesh - not for the Maxis polo shirts, unfortunately, but they replace those icky loose tops near the end of the catalogue.

[identity profile] strange-tomato.livejournal.com 2010-06-17 01:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I see that. I'd prefer it to replace like with like, but I love her textures, so I might download the custom version for possible inclusion in my own replacement (if and when I get around to trying one).

Did I say thank you for linking me? I meant "curse you!" :P I'm supposed to be removing cc, and now I'm going on a download spree!

[identity profile] strange-tomato.livejournal.com 2010-06-17 01:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I just imagine that the stomach must be considered the sexiest part of the body on Sim Earth. :P It makes sense, considering that it has more detail than the places where their sexual details are supposed to be.

[identity profile] strange-tomato.livejournal.com 2010-06-17 01:37 pm (UTC)(link)
It's okay, hon. You were still on the ball. ^_^

Haha. That's me, exactly. I never use some of it, but yet I feel as though I must have it in my game because it's so well made. XD It's stupid, though. If I pull it out and keep it in a folder I can always add it back in if I "need" it later.

Maybe I'm talking crazy, but I may even remove some of the bazillion freckle masks I have. How many freckles does one simmer need?

I know. Crazy talk, right? XD

I'm going to be very strict on the cardigans. I'kk keep some basics, but save all the rest in a folder and add back if I need a specific colour.

[identity profile] autumnparanoia.livejournal.com 2010-06-17 01:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, sorry! Ja is made of awesome, though. I've been removing quite a bit of CC recently too, but her stuff always stays, and I give her defaults priority over basically all others.

Clearly, she is awesome! That plumbbob remover mod will be so useful for storytelling.

Thanks again for linking me! ^_^

No problem, I'm happy to have helped!

[identity profile] strange-tomato.livejournal.com 2010-06-17 02:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, that's great! I'll be downloading that. Thanks for finding it.

I agree on having more options for separates. It would make so much sense for athletic, pajamas, and outerwear.

[identity profile] simgarooop.livejournal.com 2010-06-18 01:43 am (UTC)(link)

Base game meshes? Hmmm...

I think it'd be the poloshirts for males (teen to elder), because they are so useless! I recolored them for my teen project without realizing that they can only be paired with the ugly jeans from the basegame. They don't even match the jeans from H&M! If they were longer and less square shaped, I'd definitely use them more often!

I don't think I'll ever find much use for the "Goopy" outfit, but I just can't get rid of it!
