Genetic issue and toddler spam...

Can you believe it's taken me all of one day to run into an odd little snag in my legacy? Yeah, I figured. I'm a magnet for this sort of thing. My alien spawn(s) don't have green skin! I went with [livejournal.com profile] stakeit_uk's PT set, and according to her page, there's no cc in the package at all (for me to remove or otherwise mess up), but the offspring have normal skintones. In the PT's family tree shot, he shows up with pooklet's skintone, so do you think that might be the issue? Or is it because Greene is a plantsim? This seems like the same thing that was happening to [livejournal.com profile] madame_ugly just recently, but I was sure I was working with a cc-free PT set.

I'm sort of liking the results, so I'm not too worried, but it'd be nice to know what's going on all the same.

When no CC is involved on either the sim parent or the alien parent - as in both have the default Maxis skins - then the alien skin will always be dominant over the human skin in a first generation alien baby. However, since skintones work weirdly, a second generation alien baby (3/4 human, 1/4 alien) can apparently carry the alien skin DNA as a recessive, while displaying human skin.

I never knew that about the alien skintone sometimes being carried as a recessive. Do you have an example of it? I've yet to witness that.

I'm not sure if I have any myself or not. >_> I've seen other people have alien skin show back up despite the sim having two human-skinned parents, though, and I'm almost sure I've heard talk of this on MATY...

I'll look at some of my second generation aliens in SimPE later.

Sorry, butting in here... I know Ndainye have a green skinned baby from two human skinned sims. (At the end of this: http://ndainye.livejournal.com/79829.html post, if you want to see for yourself :). Oh, also, I once had an alien abduction where the result was one green one human skinned child. Long time ago, though, the father might have had a custom skin - can't remember :)

Are you sure a custom skintone wasn't involved? If the grandparents had a custom skin, the green would be recessive, but otherwise... I thought it was dominant over every other skintone, which would make it pretty much impossible to be carried as a recessive.

*is puzzled*

[identity profile] muslemura.livejournal.com 2010-04-20 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
My own game: Very possibly a custom skin, it was a long time ago so I really can't remember :)
From Ndainye's game: Can't really tell either (not my game, hehe), but maybe she can tell you?

[identity profile] meetme2theriver.livejournal.com 2010-04-20 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I don't use any custom skintones, and like I said in the post below, I have a set of twins with the alien skintone as recessive and regular S4 as dominant/displayed.

I thought it wasn't possible either, but from what I recall reading, it's not as simple with skintones. Somehow it's calculated from both the dominant genes and recessive genes of both parents, or something like that. I suspect the "skintone range" variable has something to do with it - hair and eyes do not have anything like that.

Some screenshots from SimPE. :) (Crappy MSPaint editing is crappy.)

Well, you've convinced me. Heheh. (Though I still feel compelled to see this with my own eyes now.)

That's nutty. But I suppose it adds an interesting unpredictability to the game, which sort of makes it more like real genetics. You never know when something really random will pop up.

I haven't bred a lot of hybrid sims yet, and when I do, I generally breed them together with other hybrids (well, you know the story, right?), so I don't have anything there to test this.

... or do I? I should check to see what happened with the sim DNA of Nyssa Lionheart and Constantine Summerdream. Or no... he ended up having both recessive and dominant genes for alien skin, one from each of his hybrid parents. I found THAT very interesting.

No custom skin tones are involved. I have multiple sims with recessive alien skin tones. In the same post that Liv linked the alien YA, Edgar, is a recessive alien skin tone. He's a few houses up in the post. Interestingly enough with Edgar, he got the alien skin tone from his father (s1/alien) even though it's his mother that displays the alien eyes; she's s4 with no alien recessive.

The majority of my hood is descended from Chloe Singles. While I have had multiple re-infusions of the alien genetics, I still have sims that can trace their skin tone directly to Chloe. I'm entering generation eight and have had her skin tone appear recessivly at least once per generation.

Electra's DNA Electra is the mother of the recessive infant shown.

Cool. :) Yeah, I've seen a few like that too in other people's legacies. And I just checked the twins of my first generation alien spawn in my BACC hood, and both of them display S4 skintone, but carry the alien skintone as recessive. :)

I think I remember a green baby being thrown from non-green parents in my Ishkabibble legacy (there was a lot of green in the gene pool there).

Hmmm, really? Do you have a pic of that?

(I'll admit I'm really skeptical about this one.)

Had to go digging but you can see the green baby born from TWO non green sims here: http://madame-ugly.livejournal.com/86256.html#cutid1

Jubilation T. Cornpone Ishkabibble mated with an ugly townie bartender and begat Leonid Ishkabibble, who is green.

AND (http://madame-ugly.livejournal.com/116029.html#cutid1) later in the legacy Simpatico Ishkabibble (non green) mated (and later wed) ChiChi Bertino (also non-green though she may have had some in her lineage, she was one of my mashups) and begat a very GREEN B52 Ishkabibble.

Then Simpatico bred with another non-green gal (a townie) and threw another green child, James Taylor Ishkabibble.

(thanks for this, I had fun going back and looking at my Ishes)

Well, bless your heart! You totally went and dug up some pics for me.

Thanks. This has been very imformative, and I really appreciate the evidence to support this odd new nugget of sim DNA info. What an odd little tidbit. I guess it wouldn't be so off the wall for Jill Smith to have recessive green skin (though not alien eyes). Maybe I'll make it happen in my game.

I'm even more tempted now to start an all hybrid alien neighborhood to experiment with all-alien breeding. I was planning to set something like that up for my story, so maybe I'll get started on it and see what happens a few generations in.

[identity profile] madame-ugly.livejournal.com 2010-04-21 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
I may have some more DNA info for you in a bit.

I started a new BACC a while back. The founding family is all alien (CAS alien). They've been a breeding but I don't yet have enough generations under my belt to see anything like what went on in with the Ishes (all breeding to this point has only been green to non-green and all spawn are green).

I suppose I could go into simPe and see what their genetics are like but I'm super lazy so will only do it if you directly ask me to (really, if you want to know I'll look).

My big question is, now that I'm running a game that has all EPs has anything changed (genetics wise)? I'm thinking about how the PT thing changed with EPs (how it started out that there was more than one PT, then after a certain EP it was only one, blah blah, that whole story).

I suppose if I was SUPER curious I could do a breeding experiment but I don't feel like having a bunch of random sims around (even in a crap hood I don't actively play).

You could also post over at the sims2 community and see if others can show you proof of recessive alien skin.
