Drabble+: Regret

Prompt: Regret
Characters: Ripp Grunt
Wordcount: 147
Imagecount: 1
Warnings: language

To put it in context, this inner monologue would be taking place around the time of the beginning of Chapter Twenty-Eight. It doesn't really offer any new revelations, but maybe states what we should already know a little more clearly. (Really, I'm mostly just in it for the image.)

Regrets? Yeah, I have them. I have plenty.

I regret things I've done, and things I haven't done, and things I did the wrong way, but mostly it's the things I didn't do. Things I didn't say. Going too far, saying too much, that can leave you feeling like shit, but at least you were honest. You were wide open. What more can you offer than that?

Given the choice, I'll always go too far, say too much, every time.

And well, it's scary, going there. There's some scary shit hidden in there, when you let it out. And it's scary to see it in someone else. It's fucking terrifying.

It's scary, but it's better than not knowing. It's better than being alone. The weight can be a lot to carry, but it's easier than carry it all on your own, you know?

I'll never regret that.

Well, if it helps, the images are back now.

The thing about Chapter 28 is that it takes place after all of the current chapters (and that's explained in the images, so having them missing is confusing). It's in the "not too distant future." The timelines are vague because there are no actual years to specify when anything is happening, but that opening scene takes place one month after the Smiths/Curiouses learn that PT No. 9 is dying (seen when Pascal gets a call from Jenny). It's not mentioned, but by the beginning of chapter 28, he's already dead and buried.

It'll make more sense later.

As for moving, all of the kids have left college by that point, so they're living elsewhere.

But mostly, this drabble is just about Ripp opening up his heart to Phi and finally talking about things he's buried, like everything with his father, and his fears about his own inability to measure up. He's already taken on most of Phi's demons (starting when they were teens), and that comes with a lot of worry for him. He worries about her. That's all this is really about.

Well, and the whole "going too far" thing gets mentioned again, which hints at something else that's yet to come.
