You're not the only one who has compared Ripp to a puppy, or at least thought of him as one in the story. It comes up every now and then. And emotionally, he really is a lot like a puppy.
What you've said about Ripp, Ophelia and Johnny makes sense. The idea of Ripp and Ophelia together, without Johnny, might be a stretch. Ripp isn't interested in settling down and committing to someone, but as long as Johnny and Ophelia are together, he gets to live vicariously through them, doesn't he? I don't think he'd want to have her as his own girlfriend, for all of the various reasons he doesn't want that from anyone. Maybe especially not her. He doesn't want to risk losing his friends, and that would put him at risk in that way.
I have some plans for Erin. She's an odd little character, so it would be a missed opportunity if I don't do something with her.
Ahah. Now there's an interesting comment. What could possibly happen to Johnny's family? How would this conflict effect the various families and connections in Strangetown, if it did develop into more open hostility?
Those are three very possible reasons for a rift between the friends. There is always that threat of something going wrong. We'll see how well things go, and how well they can cope if and when things begin to change for them. One thing is certain: nothing ever stays the same forever.
Nervous would definitely recognize Ophelia, though she's quite a bit older, and he may have seen Ripp before too... Johnny, not so much, but Pascal is Johnny's uncle, and Nervous would notice that he's an alien.
Yeah, Johnny has an entire outfit devoted to that special purpose. He's a bit of a hero like that (especially in Ripp's mind). It would be interesting to see how Johnny and Ripp would confront Olive in a situation that put Ophelia's life at risk, but I'm afraid that they would probably all have ended up dead in that scenario, so they're lucky that her time has passed.
