Apartment Life hates me

So I was presented with the Apartment Life EP to cheer me up in my gloomy sickly state, and I decided to just jump in and install it (a sure sign of how much I just don't give a fuck right now), but it's not working for me. The game crashes during the loading screen, right around where it says "preparing pops and locks" or some such thing. I tried two different no-cd cracks, and I tried uninstalling and reinstalling it again, and nothing changes. Why must I fail so badly?

If you have any idea what I'm doing wrong, please point out my stupidity. Maybe my brain is just too cloudy for this right now. I did remove the hacks, though. I got that much right.

*sigh*

That sounds like a conflict with a piece of custom content. Did you take your downloads folder out?

[identity profile] dothesmustle.livejournal.com 2008-08-31 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, what [livejournal.com profile] simgaroop said. It could also be a problem with saved sims folder?

Also, I hear deleting groups.cache helps. :D Good luck and feel better!

What could be wrong with the saved sims folder? I've never done anything with that when installing a new EP before.

I hear deleting groups.cache helps.

I forgot about that. I usually delete it all the time anyway, but I'll check.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Yeah, I took the whole folder out, so it's not that... :(

Aw, sorry to hear that. I don't have any technical advice. I downloaded it and the first time I tried to start it, it froze up on me, but I restarted my computer and tried again and it worked. I've played it a couple of times now. My sim gave birth to a baby in her neighbor's apartment, then managed to lock the baby in that apartment over night because while she ran off to play fetch with a dog, the neighbors went to bed and wouldn't answer the door when my sim went to retrieve it. I was surprised the social worker didn't step in. That was one cranky, smelly, hungry baby when she was finally able to scoop it off the neighbor's kitchen floor the next morning! I hope you can get it working.

Once, a sim in my saved sims folder was corrupted or something and it wouldn't let BodyShop/my game load.

[identity profile] simgarooop.livejournal.com 2008-08-31 01:58 am (UTC)(link)

That's odd, but I think I had a similar issue not long ago.

Did you delete the group.cache/accessory.cache/cigen-whatever files in the Sims 2 Folder?

That usually works when my game doesn't want to load.

[identity profile] zepheera.livejournal.com 2008-08-31 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
I had a problem like that when I installed Freetime the first time. It turned out one of my neighborhood folders got corrupted during the install

Yeah, I checked again and there was an accessory.cache file there, so I deleted it, but it stil crashed. I just restarted the computer (franwi mentioned something similar below), so I'll see if that made any difference.

So what did you do? Replace the Sims 2 folder with your backup?

I just restarted the computer, so we'll see if that helps.

Hmmm, that's good to know. I notice that my saved sims folder is missing, actually. When I uninstalled, all my folders got deleted and reset, I think. I'll just add my backups in after I figure this out.

[identity profile] inkspottedtea.livejournal.com 2008-08-31 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
I would look on MATY for clean templates - you backed up your neighbourhoods, yes? :<

[identity profile] hannahspring.livejournal.com 2008-08-31 11:27 am (UTC)(link)
You can try another thing. Back up your hoods and delete them from the The Sims 2 folder. Than start the game. If it won't crash again, the game should start creating the hoods again. Then you can overwrite the files with your backup.

Sorry to hear you're having problems. I know how it feels, I always had problems with The Sims 1. I mean always - with every single EP. Not sure if what I told you helps, but you can always give it a try.

[identity profile] zepheera.livejournal.com 2008-08-31 01:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Just remove your entire neighborhoods folder and start the game, it will generate new folders for you

[identity profile] cindyanne1.livejournal.com 2008-08-31 01:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, I'm sorry to hear about that! So you have the game installed on your computer, but it just won't load all the way? *racks brain* I don't think I've had that happen. I have heard about deleting the cigen file, the groups.cache and also the teleport file when things like this happen too.

I hope you get it figured out soon! *fingers crossed*

[identity profile] madame-ugly.livejournal.com 2008-08-31 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
*snicker*

All the sims need now is a way to lock babies in hot cars and it would be that much more realistic. "Oh, I FORGOT about him/her, please don't take the baby away!"

[identity profile] madame-ugly.livejournal.com 2008-08-31 01:46 pm (UTC)(link)
My only advice (and it's NOT technical) is are you doing the finger crossed and "pleasepleaseplease" chant? I can't say it will help you at all, but it won't hurt either.

Here, I'll do it to and send the good mojo your way.

Feel better dear!

Did it work?

Hey - I'm not sure if you'll ever read this (does it notify you when someone posts on an old entry?), but in case you do, did you ever solve your AL problem? Mine is doing the exact same thing, after a month or so of working sometimes. When I first installed it, I'd generally have to try to load it about three times before it would work, but now I've tried it probably 25 times with no luck. I removed the downloads folder, no luck, so I'm off to try the thing with the cache... I really don't want to uninstall, since I got a few of my EPs from the Sims Online Store and am not sure if I'll be allowed to redownload. Thanks so much for any help you can offer!

I think I uninstalled just AL and reinstalled it and it eventually worked. I had to try it a couple of times. Other than that, I don't have much advice.

Good luck!
