Strangetown extras: Wheezy the puppy

Remember Wheezy? He's Nervous Subject's puppy, and he's been stuck in a weird ageless state, like Peter Pan, refusing to grow up. I couldn't have him staying as a puppy in the story any longer, and I needed to show him in the next chapter, so I aged him up with InSIM.

I'm not sure what I was expecting, exactly. You can never tell with sim puppies and kittens. They all look the same.

I do know that poodle was probably the very last thing I expected.

It seems a little fancy for Nervous. Also, Wheezy is supposed to be a stray. But I suppose it does work on at least one level. Nervous would enjoy styling his hair, just like he did with the mohawk.

And clearly, Nervous loves the silly thing. I don't have the heart to switch him for a new dog now. I'll have to make it work.

And really, how could you not love this special little creature? He's so adorable.

Awwwww, who's a cute doggy? ^_^

That hair is fabulous! :P

[identity profile] saunasims.livejournal.com 2008-04-17 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
Dude. o.O That's not a poodle, that looks like a wolf with a poodle cut! That's awesome. XD

Aww , cute poodle.

I don't mean to sound like an idiot, but your story is scripted, right? Or do you just play the game and see how it goes? :p I know, ridiculous question, but I've always been curious.

He's definitely a cutie, but what a shocker! :P It really threw me off. (That, combined with real life obligations, helped to delay the next update ever further... soon, though. This is Thursday, so I'm going to count on that Thursday update magic.)

Wheezy doesn't let something like a complete lack of delicacy keep him from rocking the fluffy poodle look! He's got great hair.

*snicker* I know. He's so... chunky. Nervous fed him a little too well, maybe? It's extra funny when you consider that Nervous actually took in a number of wolves too (in the story, hes just "feeding" them, but they do live there). He likes wolves, and wolf-like animals, I guess.

[identity profile] strange-tomato.livejournal.com 2008-04-17 09:02 am (UTC)(link)
Isn't he, though? After I got over the shock, I really took to him. *hugs*

That's a good question (and it doesn't make you an idiot at all). It's mostly scripted (maybe 70-80%), but a lot of it is script-as-you-go, if that makes any sense. I play the game and let things happen, which inspires the story, but I'm also thinking about how the characters would interact in ways that the game wouldn't ever do on its own, and I set up the scenes I need for that. I have a number of overarching plots that are roughly planned out (like the Nervous-Olive-Buzz-Beakers storyline, and the alien-military thing), but it's all pretty loose, and it changes as I play it out.

Most of the predetermined plots have changed considerably since I started, and many of them weren't even very defined to begin with. I still have a couple of "goals" in mind with certain characters, but the story develops organically, as I play along too. Things happen sooner than I planned, or the outcome of an exchange changes, and things like that (I'll finally be able to discuss some of those changes, once the events happen). I do pay attention to chemistry and LTWs, etc. A serendipitous game event, like a random heart-blowing that I didn't see coming, can (and has) changed the plot, but I'm not ruled entirely by it. Tank, for example, insistent on flirting with Ophelia, so I included that in the story, but knowing their characters, I knew it wouldn't develop into anything more than a crush.

Mostly, I just think about the characters that I've developed for each of them, and then view everything that happens in-game through that lens. Once I've thought the details of the character through, I let that lead the way. That's why I never really know where it's going. It's a lot of fun.

Awwww... I like him!!

And you know, I was shocked the first time I took a pet to a mirror to change its appearance. You can change practically EVERYTHING if not everything on it. Even coat color! I was suprised about that. I mean, I don't know many people (or sims either, lol) that would go to the trouble of dying their pet's fur!

I've never checked, but I wonder if anyone has created a custom pet coat pattern? Oh wouldn't that be cute to give Wheezy a mowhawk? Hee.

[identity profile] xel-squirgle-ox.livejournal.com 2008-04-17 10:58 am (UTC)(link)
That is one strange looking poodle-wolf. Well, I'm glad Nervous is happy. That's all that matters. :)

[identity profile] amaryssobellus.livejournal.com 2008-04-17 11:17 am (UTC)(link)
You could always go to a mirror and change his coat. :) The same way you would add a coller.

[identity profile] madame-ugly.livejournal.com 2008-04-17 11:47 am (UTC)(link)
*SNORT* That's awesome.

I can't really tell from the pic but is he a "full" poodle. His body looks a little fatter than a poodle (but it could just be the shadows).

You can change a pets hair accesories by using the mirror. But please don't. This is too awesome (and Nervous would futz over the dog's hair since his own isn't long enough yet).

[identity profile] franwi.livejournal.com 2008-04-17 11:47 am (UTC)(link)
Bwahahaha! Before I saw the pics I guessed from your "not what I expected" that he turned into a poodle, lol. It really is a pretty dog, though! Big and muscular, not like a regular poodle.

But I suppose it does work on at least one level. Nervous would enjoy styling his hair, just like he did with the mohawk.

Yeah, I think that's the only thing that might make it work. I mean maybe it's just a stray he styles like a poodle, lol. You could go as far as to substitute a black wolf for Wheezy at first, then show how Nervous styled the dog's hair into this wonderful poodle look. ;)

A poodle?? Hehe. It´s the most not-fitting dog to Nervous I can imagine... But this makes it so funny. Yes, you need to keep him!

[identity profile] thelesserfaith.livejournal.com 2008-04-17 12:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahh, very cool. Thanks a lot for taking the time to explain. :)

[identity profile] uber-orange.livejournal.com 2008-04-17 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Woah. I was expecting something so much different than this!

Oh well, as long as Nervous loves him, I'm happy with it :D plus Wheezy really is adorable. Hope Nervous has fun styling Wheezy's hair!

But yeah... puppies can be so deceiving. x3 it's fun to get surprises like this.

[identity profile] indigoleo.livejournal.com 2008-04-17 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I've had him before, the last time before I messed up my 'hood.
The funniest thing was I got him for the Grunt brothers. Military family, all guys, gave him a really macho-type name (I can't remember now what it was) and he grew up....into that. o.O So not what I was expecting.
Maybe you could find some way to style his hair differently. Nervous would certainly love that.
And he could still be a stray. Someone who didn't like poodles tossed him out when his pure bred Fifi got jumped by some mangy no-breed dog one day. After all, he really is a bit chunky for a real poodle. It could work.

[identity profile] smjoshsims.livejournal.com 2008-04-17 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
The poodle is so cute! I agree with everyone though, it does look a lot like a wolf! :D

[identity profile] simfulacts.livejournal.com 2008-04-17 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
AWWW! I want him! :D

[identity profile] saylee.livejournal.com 2008-04-18 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
How cute! Though I have to say that I'm hugely relieved that the puppy I gave the Grunts didn't grow up like this. The shock might have been more than Buzz could take.

King of Strangetown

[identity profile] ricamarcella.livejournal.com 2008-04-18 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
I came across an interesting forum that ran a game called King of Strangetown. All the Strangetown main characters from the five families appeared as a list, with 5 points beside each character name. People then logged in one by one to add 1 point to the character they liked best, and take away 1 point from the character they liked least. Whenever a character reached 0 he or she was eliminated.

Guess who's the most popular Strangetownie! Nervous! By far! He and Ophelia lasted the longest, and she trailed him by something like 70+ (Nervous) to 10-ish (Ophelia). That's a very far second. So I reckon a lot of people are going to be happy to see a Nervous + Wheezy update?

P.S. The General was the least popular character, followed by Loki, Circe, Jenny, and Olive... all the way up to Ophelia and the beloved Nervous. But I'm a bit puzzled by why people ascribe a good nature to Nervous. Given his biological parents AND his adoptive parents, how the heck did that guy turn out so sweet?!

I didn't realize that you could change so much either, but I couldn't figure how to change the poodle coat (and I was afraid to mess it up), so I just left him as-is. I just explained it away in the story. Works for me.

A matching mohawk for Wheezy would be awesome! Please let me know if you ever see anything like that.

[identity profile] strange-tomato.livejournal.com 2008-04-20 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
It's totally a fat wolf under the poodle costume! *snort* He cracks me up. He has a couple of white legs too, if you look closely.

Nervous loves him anyway. You just know that Nervous doesn't care what he looks like. :)
ext_122042: (Default)

[identity profile] strange-tomato.livejournal.com 2008-04-20 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
I tried that, but I didn't see the option to change the topcoat. *shrugs* I have a lot to learn about pet creation. I've never really tried it. For Wheezy, I just decided to rock the poodle look. :P
ext_122042: (Default)

[identity profile] strange-tomato.livejournal.com 2008-04-20 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
No, he's fatter than your average poodle, I'm pretty sure. He looks like a wolf under the poodle fur. *snort* He's great.

I kept him as-is. Nervous deserves a dog as special as he is, and he's just too odd to change. I think it really does make sense that Nervous would just cut his hair into something fancy because he's into that.

ext_122042: (Default)

[identity profile] strange-tomato.livejournal.com 2008-04-20 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
I like that he's a big dog. A guard dog might come in handy for Nervous, one of these days.

I thought about starting him off "normal" and then styling, but instead I just introduced him already styled. I figured, why not? It's easier, and Wheezy deserves to be special form day one.
ext_122042: (Default)

[identity profile] strange-tomato.livejournal.com 2008-04-20 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
I know. It didn't seem very appropriate at first, but why not? The more I think about it, they more it actually does work. It's fun, anyway, and there's nothing wrong with that. :)
ext_122042: (Default)

[identity profile] strange-tomato.livejournal.com 2008-04-20 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was totally caught off guard by it, but he really is a cute (I was going to say little, but... *snicker*) thing.

The surprise element can be a lot of fun. Like the random townies that get generated sometimes, and transition outfits. It's good for a laugh.
ext_122042: (Default)

[identity profile] strange-tomato.livejournal.com 2008-04-20 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
You had the exact same one? *snicker* Well, I suppose it makes sense, since I just ordered him from the pet adoption service. The thought of his with the Grunts is even funnier, really.

I'm going to make him work. I figure he's just a big brute of a dog that Nervous decided to style like a poodle, because he's odd like that. Nervous is a strange one anyway, so I think it works.
ext_122042: (Default)

[identity profile] strange-tomato.livejournal.com 2008-04-20 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
It really does look like a wolf. He's a big dog under that poodle coat. I decided to mention the wolf-like appearance in the next update, since it's undeniable, really.
ext_122042: (Default)

[identity profile] strange-tomato.livejournal.com 2008-04-20 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
From what indigoleo said, he's always one of the default puppies in the pet adoption service, so if you adopt a black puppy under the large dog category, you just might get the same one.
ext_122042: (Default)

[identity profile] strange-tomato.livejournal.com 2008-04-20 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
*snort* That happened to indigoleo (read the comment above). She had this exact dog in the Grunt family. Maybe Buck styled him? I can see Buzz not being pleased. Very funny.

Re: King of Strangetown

[identity profile] strange-tomato.livejournal.com 2008-04-20 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
I think I've seen that game before. It's pretty interesting, and I'm not surprised that Nervous won. I am, however, very surprised that Ophelia was second. She seems to get tossed aside all too often, so that Johnny can be free to pair up with someone else (most often a Grunt, and often a CAS sim too). Though I guess that there are plenty of people that keep her with Johnny too, and she does seem to have a lot of fans, at least from what I see here from readers of this story.

I would have guessed Johnny before Ophelia, though. Or maybe Tank or Ripp. Or the Curious brothers. They seem to have the most fans, next to Nervous.

The General's position does not surprise me. He's the most likely to get killed off too (and I have only added to that trend, though I swear I had a good reason for it).

I think that Nervous is such a victim that he gets that personality ascribed to him. I don't consider his completely sweet, though. He has a lot of social issues, for sure, and he can be closed off and even mean, but underneath it, he is a good person. At the same time, he could easily be characterized to grow up to become something even worse than Olive. That would be an interesting approach to take with him, and it would make sense.

[identity profile] 80sfiend.livejournal.com 2008-04-20 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
AWWW!! Wheezy is adorable!!! :D I totally LMAO though when I saw that he's a POODLE. :D Very unexpected but he's just way too cute. :D

[identity profile] strange-tomato.livejournal.com 2008-04-20 12:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, he's a cute one, isn't he? I love that big, weird poodle wolf. He's really grown on me.
