Extras: In Memory of Kaylynn Langerak

As if consumed by the flames of her passion for unavailable men, Kaylynn always seems to die by fire in my game.

There was one exception. The first time I played Pleasantview, she was the main household I played with. I moved her in with Don, got her pregnant, then moved her to a trailer in the area of town where the Brokes live. She ended up having one illigitimate child by Don and one by Daniel, moved in her female CAS lover (who had a child by Mortimer Goth), and thus formed a rather big, unconventional, and happy family.

The second time I played Pleasantview, she died in Don's house, while still an NPC. Don left for work, not noticing the ramen noodles left in the microwave. Somehow, they managed to catch on fire, in the way that microwaves do in the universe of Sims 2. Kaylynn was cleaning the house, rushing into the kitchen to panic about the fire, and was consumed by the flames. Don was heartbroken. He was also haunted for years, with Kaylynn's ghost even reacting with jealousy to him woohooing other sims on the property. His alien daughter, sick of being terrified by Kaylynn, eventually rolled a want to bring her back to life. Her plan was to go to college and study for the paranormal career. This goal was never realised, as I restarted the hood before she had the chance.

In my current Pleasantview, the one which exists in the Strangetown, Here We Come universe, Kaylynn was once again lost to a fire.

Kaylynn lived in the same trailer park that the Brokes live in in this version too, though this time I used the trailer park apartment lot that came with AL (which I love). Kaylynn lived on the far end from the Brokes, dreaming of the day her prince would come and take her away from all of this. Sadly, it was something that would never work out for her.

The fire started during a thunder shower, which ended before the fire went out. I tend to like this feature of Seasons, because it does give us these random natural disaster scenarios that lend themselves to storytelling.

Kaylynn rushed out to the fire, and I had every intention of directing her back to her trailer, but she caught fire before I could do that. At first I couldn't believe it, and I knew I had no way out of the situation. A toddler can't call the fire department, afterall. (More on that in a moment.)

Death came to claim her.

Before the flames had even subsided, the social worker came to collect young Audrey Langerak.

That's nice to know. *shudders*

Luckily, a kind neighbour offered to take Audrey, as she was friends with Kaylynn (and may or may not have partially reenacted a single mothers variation of a scene from The Hours with her).

Yes, Brandi Broke adopted Audrey, even though she could barely make ends meet with her three sons, Beau, Gilbert, and George (luckily, Dustin had already left for college). Conveniently, and somewhat expectedly, she had a want for another child anyway.

It all makes for a very interesting backstory for Audrey Broke, and Brandi now has the daughter she also dreamed of, after her sea of sons. This story just yearns to be told, so I'm sure you'll be seeing some mention of it somewhere along the line.

I don't think I have to mention who her father was, do I? Will the obviousness raise eyebrows around Pleasantview? Only time will tell.

R.I.P. Kaylynn. You've always been my favourite NPC.

Oh dear. That's hilarious, and a little sad, and the foundation of a great story. Why doesn't my game have great things like this happening in it? :P

That's Daniel's daughter, isn't it?

Isn't it a crazy story? It's the sort of thing that you have no choice but to go along with, because great story opportunities like this really are pretty rare. Having things like ACR helps with that, but true tragedies are few and far between. If it happens, I usually roll with it.

Heheh. Yes. Yes, it is. XD

That second story. Seriously, it's like every woman Don comes in contact with vanishes or dies horribly. Why haven't the sim police twigged yet! D:

Poor Kaylynn. That's so sad, and yet awesome; it is a fantastic story. How much do I love that Brandi took her in? It just seems so her. Taking in another child can't be anything but a bad idea, but she needs a home and Brandi is a little crazy like that and-and... :D

Will the obviousness raise eyebrows around Pleasantview?

I don't know about eyebrows, but I imagine it'll raise Mary-Sue's fist. :P

Poor Kaylynn. She always ends up living alone raising a million babies from Don and Daniel in my game. Although I think she did die from starvation once, while living with Daniel. I didn't save that though.

aww! How sad, and how sweet all together (and it feels very true to Brandi, too)

And lol at the social worker notice. I've never read that before. Creepy! O_0

Julien Cooke's tree got set on fire by lightning the other day and the rain stopped just then so it kept burning. He got home from work, paniced because of the fire and ran over there so we couldn't get him to call the fire department, I tried to make him put out the fire himself but it got him. Since he lived alone there was nothing I could do. :P But, while it was entertaining, he didn't leave behind much of a legacy to work with. So we quit without saving.

That message about the orphanage, I've never seen that before! Guess that only pops up if everyone dies and the kids are taken away, like those great popups about the Grim Reaper and how he likes long walks on the beach.

Aw, poor Kaylynn! And poor Audrey, of course.

You know, I get those random objects being struck by lightning a lot but the fire always goes out before it spreads. I've never seen anyone die from it and it had never occurred to me that it might actually happen. The rain always puts the fire out before my Sims even get near it.

It's little things like those that I adore in this game. Not so much the orphanage popup, though it's certainly darkly amusing, but definitely the random occurences & natural disasters....

I wonder how long it will take before someone notes the familiar features in Audrey.

I totally knew it was Daniel's baby! I can always see it in the eyes with his kids :)

You have no idea how sad this makes me. I do love me some Kaylynn, and I instantly knew who the father of her child was. poor thing. :(

I love how even when there is a main story, there will always be these side occurrences which make up great tales of their own. I look forward to seeing her pop up in S,HWC, a flower girl for Beau and Frances perhaps?

I can't believe she got killed by fire, not once, but twice...I'm going to have to watch her carefully lol.

I love the random tidbit about the Sim City Orphanage and then the ominous line about "The Orphanage awaits" just adds even more *shudders too* Aside from that, bravo for your creative used of so few images and such a compelling story background story to Audrey. Beautifully done, and bravo to Brandi for adopting too :D *loves Brandi and the rest of the Brokes here :D
