Strangetown: Ripp's new hair. I did it myself!

Thank you to everyone who offered suggestions to my hair mesh problem, and particularly those who gave me a nudge to open up Bodyshop and give it a whirl myself. [personal profile] music_simbol suggested this mesh, which was more or less the same basic shape as the Maxis ponytail, but about half as long. Then she insisted that switching up the textures would be super easy to do, and it really was! Recolouring isn't hard, especially when it is a basic cut and paste job like this one was (and changing the hue would be easy too, I imagine). I could do that again, no problem. Thanks, Music Simbol! You rock.

Want to see how it looks?

Ripp: Yessir! Looks about the same from the front, but how about the back?

Ripp: Yeah, that's more like it. Still slightly longer than it would be, but pretty darn close. (And it's longer than a fucking dork knob, thankyouverymuch!)

Ripp: Damn, I look good. Oh yeah... and the hair looks pretty fucking sweet too. If, you know, I actually wanted to tidy up for some reason. Pffft. Whatever.

As you can see, the mesh isn't perfect (some of the animation is a little wonky too - revealing other oddities), but I can easily work around that when taking the photos. I'm so pleased that this worked out.

But why would Ripp want or need to put his hair up? Hmmm... Is he trying to give off a good impression? But why?

The answer will be revealed in the next chapter.

Hee Hee! Those pics are so funny!

Nice job on the hair. I think it looks very nice. I'm still deadly afraid of creating my own custom content (it looks so difficult in the tutorials, and I'm not exactly a pro at Photoshop), but I'm so glad you were able to edit it yourself ^__^.

I did ask at a forum but sadly, I got no reply. I guess Maxis requests don't interest a large part of the Sims community *shrugs*

Ooh, I smell an audition coming up. Yay! Glad you were able to come up with something that works.

The primp interaction always amuses me, and it's so Ripp-like.

The mesh was basically an identical shape, so I just copied the Maxis one and pasted it over the altered mesh. That's all. And I was afraid that it would be hard. It just proves that we're all a lot more capable than we give ourselves credit for, most of the time.

Seriously, this is so easy to do. I can tell by your icon that you have more Photoshop skills than I do. You should try it! I'll bet you could make some great content.

That's what I expected. Those who prefer Maxis content or Maxis-match stuff seem to be in the minority, for sure. Especially with hair. But now that I know that recolouring is pretty easy, I may have to start churning out some more recolours. There are a number of great Maxis meshes that need more colour options, like that really nice strappy, striped A-line dress from H&M stuff. It's great, but few people have recoloured it. I could use that in some extra colours.

Heheh. Maybe. Or... maybe not. But that is certainly one reason he'd want to do this.

Hooray for DIY!

[identity profile] xel-squirgle-ox.livejournal.com 2008-03-01 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
Great job! :)
By any chance, does it involve the play that they've been talking about?

[identity profile] music-simbol.livejournal.com 2008-03-01 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
Hell, that was quick. I just got the comment that you were gonna try it. And I just wrote a detailed instruction. Oh well, as long as it worked.

And yeah, recoloring isn't that hard. I've been able to do it in the basic sense, mostly with clothes. For a shoot I did, I needed black and white clothes, so I recolored about ten outfits. It's not that hard, and it's worth playing around with.

Ripp actually trying to make a good impression? Did hell freeze over?! And yo Ripp, how about a SHAVE?! If you're going to go thru the trouble of of finding a scrunchie for your hair, a quick shave won't kill ya!

[identity profile] strange-tomato.livejournal.com 2008-03-01 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry that you wrote out the instructions for nothing. I know I didn't sound very confident when I wrote that. Heheh.

It was super easy. It should be easy to adjust colours in Photoshop (or in my case, GIMP). Thanks for the nudge to do this. I'll have to try some clothes and maybe some other stuff too.

*snort* Do you think I would reveal the entire makeover ahead of time? Where's the fun in that? He does get a shave, and he dresses up nice too. (I know - crazy!) He has a good reason for wanting to make a good impression. It's for something that he feels is very important, and you'll see why.

[identity profile] strange-tomato.livejournal.com 2008-03-01 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! It might involve the play, eventually, but it's something else first.

Oh, and LOL at Ripp using a scrunchie!

[identity profile] pixelcurious.livejournal.com 2008-03-01 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
Aw yeah! That mesh is so much closer than the ones I was looking at the other day. And you just used the texture from the long ponytail? Sweet! It looks great.

I'm looking forward to your future adventures in recoloring, too. :D
ext_122042: (Default)

[identity profile] strange-tomato.livejournal.com 2008-03-01 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks. It's quite passable, isn't it? I'm so happy that Music Simbol located that mesh, since it's nearly a perfect edit of the long ponytail.

I'll definitely try my hand at making some clothing recolours, since there are a number of Maxis meshes that I use a lot and would like more options for them. maybe I'll even look into sharing them if they turn out okay.

Oh, and I'm going to be showing off your shaving cream in the next chapter too! :D

[identity profile] music-simbol.livejournal.com 2008-03-01 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
Most tutorials can look daunting, but when you get right down to it, it's not that hard. I only had GIMP when I first started messing with recoloring. I still use it sometimes, since photoshop can take awhile to open sometimes, and I get impatient. I think the one I first read was from MTS2. As long as you know what a layer is and how to fill that layer with a color, you can pretty much do whatever.

Hmmm, the only thing I can think of is band related thing. Course, if that's not it, it's not like you couldn't think up another random event that no one saw coming.

I call all hair ties scrunchies. It's just something my whole family does. Obviously, Ripp wouldn't use anything bright pink and sparkly, but scrunchie, hair tie, tomato, tomahto...

[identity profile] pixelcurious.livejournal.com 2008-03-01 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
Heh, the shaving cream! I had forgotten about that. :D

I'd love to see more recolors of some H&M stuff, so yeah! Do you think you might recolor this one?

http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=267401

HP's is very nice, if a little fancy for everyday. I can't imagine using the original, except maybe on a tacky older lady kind of character (it makes me think of Mrs. Roper on "Three's Company," a really dumb 70s sitcom). Not that I'm making requests, before you even get into clothing recolors *wink* Just wondering. I could attempt my own recolor, after all...

[identity profile] strange-tomato.livejournal.com 2008-03-01 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
I know what you mean. It all seems hard before you start. I should check out a couple of those tutorials on MTS2, now that I have half an idea what they are talking about.

It might be a surprise. ;) It's something that I've kind of neglected to deal with, but I really need to before too much time passes in the story.

I just see a large fabric covered hair tie when I hear scrunchie. Like I wore as a girl in the 80's with a bad perm. That's why I laughed.

But yeah... tomato, tomahto, or even tomado, as I'm sure it sounds when I say it.

[identity profile] xel-squirgle-ox.livejournal.com 2008-03-01 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh! How interesting... :ponders what it is, knowing that you wont tell us, yet like to torture us with keeping secrets yet saying cryptic things that make us beg for more lol: Oh well, I hope we find out soon!

[identity profile] strange-tomato.livejournal.com 2008-03-01 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
You mean, THIS shaving cream?

Photobucket

Ripp: You want ME to shave? *whines*

Oh, I know Three's Company, don't you worry! ;) (A funny sidenote - my SO's father wrote a petition to get it taken off the air locally, because he thought it portrayed poor moral values, with the male and two females living together. *snort* I will never stop laughing at that.)

I did use that original dress on someone in Pleasantview, but it's really not suitable for very many characters. I used HP's version on Frances Worthington's mother. I really like it.

Someone did make some recolours of that dress already, but the don't seem to be linked to from HP's page, which is odd. I would like to recolour that one. I have to start examining the Maxis meshes more closely now, to see which ones might be worth focusing on.

[identity profile] strange-tomato.livejournal.com 2008-03-01 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
Do I do that? ;)

If I say much more, I think it will be easily given away, and I think it will be far less interesting if you knew about it ahead of time. But Ripp gets serious enough about something to tidy up, so that's significant.

[identity profile] music-simbol.livejournal.com 2008-03-01 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm sorry, I just had to jump in and laugh.

[identity profile] strange-tomato.livejournal.com 2008-03-01 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
Don't laugh. The boy is in pain! Trauma! *snicker*

[identity profile] music-simbol.livejournal.com 2008-03-01 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
Hmmm, you're saying it's serious. Buzz's memorial? That's the only other thing that comes to mind. If that's not it, I'll just shut up and wait for the update.

[identity profile] music-simbol.livejournal.com 2008-03-01 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
Shaving is not going to kill him! It's hair! It's grows back!
ext_122042: (Default)

[identity profile] strange-tomato.livejournal.com 2008-03-01 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
No. They have no proof that The General is dead, so it wouldn't be that. I won't say anything else.
ext_122042: (Default)

[identity profile] strange-tomato.livejournal.com 2008-03-01 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, it does grow back. Pretty quickly too. But don't try telling him that!

[identity profile] sinderellah.livejournal.com 2008-03-01 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
I can't imagine him doing his hair this way for a Jill-thing. Hmmm! Besides the play I don't have any ideas.
ext_122042: (Default)

[identity profile] strange-tomato.livejournal.com 2008-03-01 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
No, you're right. It doesn't have anything to do with Jill. There are only a couple of people that he'd be willing to make this much effort for, and it doesn't even include himself.

Oh, too many clues...
