I know what you mean about it tending to backfire, so I try not to do that, even when it's hard to see the characters misunderstood. I try to show both sides, especially when someone gets a lot of negative reactions, but people react the way they will react. I get all sorts of varied reactions, which is great. For every person that loves a character, there's probably someone that hates them (except Frances :P). It's very interesting.
